I feel like the algorithm also pushes negative videos more. Can I offer some encouragement? Just the way you seem to live your life is HIGHLY positive. The fact that you share your lifestyle like this is you sharing more positivity than you may realize. I appreciate it.
Great video! We have been "homesteading" for 14 years but only took the plunge into RU-vid 2.5 years ago and we can agree completely with you about the feeling you get when someone shares their story with you and how you have influenced it. Love this video for the fact that you spoke about so many of the things we find as well and its nice to hear the honesty from a bigger channel that's been doing it for a while.
People are absolutely awful no matter what you do. You guys were "my first" and remain my absolute favorite!!! I found you back when we were stuck in a townhouse, researching milk cow breeds and dying to get out (and out of state) to start a whole different life. 2020 happened and we ran with it in the best way possible and got to where we dreamed of. I look forward to every one of your videos, mostly because I just adore you two! I'm so excited to watch your new journey. And a little relieved to hear that K is not pregnant again. LOL!!!
My husband got me into your channel. He loved how you guys showed butchering and all. Got us started on butchering our own meat birds. My husband loves your processing turkeys long time ago. Crazy how you have grown and also how we have grown in our homestead journey. Thanks for all the knowledge we have gotten from you guys.
Your husband is a wise man 😁 It’s sad, the changes on YT over the years has meant I don’t do much Butcher videos anymore, might be good to try to sneak a few new ones in!
I'm so disappointed in the people who think it is ok to criticize creators. They need to shut up. And I am SO glad you get the people who appreciate what you do. I think you two and your adorable family are amazing.
You guys were what got me into homesteading AND start a youtube channel! Those videos of your children are so precious. We are almost a year in and the footage we have now of our kids on the farm is priceless!!! We didn't have the funds for fancy equipment.. we run our channel with my cell phone and older laptop! This video is so encouraging. Thank you for choosing to share your lives to help educate others.
20:53 I think the video where you are 1 wk postpartum & delivering a goat - you look incredible. Vital, centered, in that place of power (I’m serious. Not in any way throwing shade). As a mom of 3, grandma to 9, great grandma to 2… I recognize that energy. No matter how tired you may feel - it’s still there. We have 4 hens & a rooster because of your encouragement! Blessings to you all ❤
Thanks. You are one of my reasons I kept moving forward with our Homestead. I learned how to do so many new ventures by your open lifestyle. You are good. 👍Negative sells, and negative people just like to be negative. Glad you are real. Blessings. 🙏
You’re so right how negative things sell. I figured that out when I kept seeing one of my homestead channels post “worst farming mistake ever” or “ All of my animals almost died, I’m quitting” that used to get me every time 😅😅 they literally say the same things every few weeks
Ya'll are awesome, and you're accomplishments and how you've handled challenges are amazing. Keep doing what you do and thanks for letting us come along for the ride.
Thanks for the honest advice guys. I enjoy your genuineness and you seem very humble and down to earth. We have just started our homesteading journey in Australia and can relate to your journey. Thank you for the inspiration to keep going!
You know, you guys are just awesome. Thank you so much for sticking around even among the negative people. You guys are so enjoyable and wonderful and wish I could meet ya'll in real life. God bless you and the family!
Love watching your channel and following your homestead! I have always been curious how you came up with your kids names, and also how to introduce children to homesteading and how they cab helping out in a safe and engaging way based on age. Thank you for all you guys do! #askhomesteady
I started watching you guys over the summer after I fell in love with the idea of homesteading, fast forward to September we found our dream homestead and were able to purchase it and now we are slowly getting things set up and ready for some chickens, and a garden to start. I love love your videos thank you for the wealth of information and sharing your experiences!
I've been watching you for years and I am grateful that you have stuck with it. It is a joy to watch your family grow and thrive, and I appreciate seeing how your farming has evolved as our own family's farming continually shifts and evolves. You are a family I relate to and I cheer you on from our Canadian wilderness homestead. (Also I love the mustache 😂 and think Aust has a great sense of humour.) Thanks for the openness and transparency.
Ya'll have great personalities. Kay is such a rock. The balance between you to is awesome. Keeping it real keeps viewers like me. I am too private to share on YT but really admire and appreciate the tons of work you guys do in sharing knowledge that you are learning on your journey.
Thanks for this video! I love the positive vibes here. We just started our RU-vid video documenting our journey from city to country. Thanks for inspiring us.
I love you guys and was so glad to get to talk with you both at HONE. Don't let the naysayers get you down. You have a beautiful family and I look forward to watching your future homesteading adventures.
I love your energy and a subscriber of mine recommended your channel... I'm so glad they did. We are starting our homestead off grid journey and I'm loving the content. Thanks for being real... you all make me laugh at times too. I absolutely love it! ❤️ 😅
I love your transparency, you guys are both so real and down to earth. Im also considering starting a youtube video ralking about homeschool and sharing cirriculum and what i do for my kids in our homeschool. Im extremely private so im struggling with this idea but feel God keeps putting it on my heart. God bless you both and your little ones and all your animals!❤
Thank you for this! It’s hard starting a homestead and trying to document it all with my phone. I have so much video I haven’t even edited and put up because it can be overwhelming work to build all this and have babies and take care of 5 kids. To see you guys doing it is encouraging! You guys are down to earth and that’s why we are confident about being a Homesteady pioneer. Our kids love watching your videos too. I’m a city girl myself, learning everything for the first time, changing my mindset on food (because growing up in the city we don’t know anything but the grocery store) This world needs more positivity and encouragement. Someone once told me there is room for everyone at the table and each person has their own unique perspective. That’s why the homesteading videos are so great, it’s not about competition but about community. It’s not about becoming famous, but for serving others. That’s the mindset I will keep as we go forward and start to put ourselves out there. Thank you! I needed this! We look forward to #askhomesteady coming back. Be encouraged, you are making a difference!
Best video I have ever seen about reality of starting the youtube channel. I am having so many doubts about starting my own channel and you just help to compartmentalize my thoughts about it. Thank you !
I have so much respect for you guys, even more so now that I know you’ve deliberately chosen to keep it real & low key, despite knowing you could make a lot more money by chasing the negativity. Kudos to you and thank you for not contributing to the cesspool the internet tends to be! Society is all the better for it. Now, #askhomesteady, I’d really love to hear more about how you plan to turn stripped forestry land into fertile pasture. Cheers : )
I want to be one those people who are appreciative of all your efforts, good, bad or crazy. You have answered so many questions for me before I even asked 😊❤
Oh man I love seeing your kids at a young age as they have grown up so fast, I remember watching them when they were younger, it is really neat that you through that in.
I’d want to start a RU-vid channel but I know I’d give up because it’s so much work. Plus my property is always such a mess with half finished projects going on. But I love your alls channel and can tell Aust loves it. I subscribed on the one chicken video because of the humor with the mario brothers lol. It’s probably my favorite homesteading channel because I feel like I’m chilling with friends when I watch your videos and I laugh with all the little bits of humor thrown in. They aren’t just educational but also super enjoyable to watch, so I’m very happy y’all stuck with it!
I have enjoyed your journey. Thankyou. Kay is a big part of why I liked this channel. She was milking cows and taking care of babies. She is a hard working and Solid woman!!!! A treasure!
Aust abd Kay! Thank you a million times over for doing this channel. I actually was a podcast subscriber before i was a viewer…. Im picky on who i watch/listen to. I love how real you are. Our first day of having sheep they all got out. I was very much “what am i doing with my life” but i dug deep and we are still loving our new life on our oceanfront homestead. My #askhomesteady question is in your current farm set up (which is more like what we have) do you have a separate well for the barn? We are concerned about our well running dry (it never has as farvas we know) but our barn doesnt have water (or electricity but thats a separate issue) and we will be doing some upgrades and wondered if a well dig should be on our radar. Second question is what are you looking forward to the most on your new homestead
I started watching y'all about three years before we had our homestead. I learned about mini Jerseys and milking from your channel and I've loved watching you guys. Plus I'm from CT originally so that was cool! I have a youtube channel it's grown a bit but still under 1000. I'm very consistent then slack for a month and so on and so forth. But not giving up!!🙏
I love that you say it took you time. I so appreciate that as a new RU-vidr. I’ve been homesteading for 20 years but RU-vid alittle over a year. Also mentioning your videos making money years to come. Thank you for your openness and honesty! New sub
This was great. Loved hearing your pros and cons, I can identify with so many of them. When I started my channel I made a list of all the reasons I wanted to do it (what I thought would be pros) and what I thought could be cons. The reasons why I wanted to outweighed the potential negatives: documenting our journey back to the land, being able to look back on the footage of my child, see how I've learned over time, become a better communicator, encourage others to try the lifestyle, find community (I'm more of a private person too) and build some kind of income as well! Just found you guys and subscribed!
Your cow video answering questions on getting a dairy cow for the first time really helped me calm the nerves about getting our dairy cow. She was 4 years past calf, and I was supposed to have time to bond with her before milking. Surprise, she's still giving a gallon a day four years after having her last calf!
Well... I really DO appreciate your videos and have really committed to watching all the new ones as they come out (found you month ago on a mini jersey video). Homestead dreaming here. Since I started watching, I got 6 pullets, now laying hens and we are looking for land! Keep sharing. Most of us appreciate all you share!
I made a few videos and it was so much fun!! its great to document for yourself, and share with friends and family! You can't go wrong :) I live in CT by the way guys, good for you guys for getting out of this expensive state.
Great channel. Just started watching a few of episodes. I love the fact that reality vs fiction based. How honest and real with a touch of sarcasm clips to lighten mood. With the amount of kids you have is intriguing how you guys coup compared to regular system. Like you guya said the we don't talk about. Thank you for your honesty.
Found you guys in 2020, when I convinced my husband to get chickens 😂now we are buying land and looking forward to building our homestead. Trying to get the courage to appear on our channel for homesteading. Right now just getting my feet wet with other videos. I really appreciate this video and the honesty. :) keep up the awesome work
I have been watching your videos regularly! It feels like you are my RU-vid friends. Makes me wanna say “where are these negative Nancy’s??let me at em!” Love your content, what your doing, and you guys just being you.
I have Always Enjoyed your "realness"💞 your journey has been such a blessing to follow and love K she's such a Lil spit fire and strong willed Momma👩🏼🌾💖
I’m not sure how I landed on this page but I think you all are a super amazing people, a cute couple with the most adorable kids. God bless you. I appreciate your candor that you have shared with your viewers. What I have learned by watching this video are valuable tools that are transferable to other parts of my life or for the life of anyone. I very, very much appreciate it thank you for this video.
This episode was very encouraging for me. I was encouraged by many people to start a channel because of 40 years of homesteading. If you do the math, yes I'm 61 and not afraid to work.I raise 80% of my food. I love to educate on gardening. Again, glad to come across your channel And thank you 😊
I have been watching you guys for about a year and I believe this is the first time I am commenting. There are a number of channels that I avoid because they seem to be "click batty". Reasons why I like your channel; You are currently in the area I was born, ... Central Pa... Lewistown. You seem to be honest about your homesteading journey and you seem to avoid the "click bate" titles..... I dig the mustache even though it reminds me of a guy I work with that I hate. I am trying to buy land and create a homestead and I enjoy your perspective. I am eagerly watching you create your new homestead. Thank you for what you do and putting your life out there for others to comment on and critique.
That was very cool of y'all to be transparent about how much money you are making from RU-vid. It really put things in perspective for us smaller channels and newbies.
I started watching you quite some time ago while I was getting ready to move to some acreage. You inspired me so much. I now have six laying hens, three Nubian goats, 3 beautiful Galloway girls cows (expecting anytime) and meat rabbits. I can hardly wait to start building my greenhouse and garden. I have a lovely little home, a shop and a nice barn on 10 acres in BC. I am so very happy to be here and I thank you, so much, for all you have done to help me. I enjoy your happiness and your honesty!!
Got introduced to y’all because of the video you did interviewing Kirstin over at Mouse Creek Farm. Shortly after that we started putting effort into our channel and feel like it’s been growing pretty well, but still a long way to go. I’ve loved being able to keep up with what y’all do, and this video is so motivating, thanks for the info on what y’all make on it!
#askhomesteady YAAAAY!!! I am so excited you’re bringing back Ask Homesteady! Happy birthday to me!!! When you first said you had a big announcement I was hoping this was it! This was my favorite series, and I was sad to see it go! I learned a lot from all the questions and subsequent answers. Woot!
🥳 sad truth is we needed a break from it because Trolls. Ask Homesteady can attract a lot of trolling. So from time to time we just take a break. But it’s time to bring it back!!!
lol. You two are hilarious. Your conversation about whether or not someone should start a you tube channel sounds like exactly what goes on in my head about the same topic.
Thanks for making this video. I've been watching you for a few years now. Through thick and thin. I don't think I could ever do You Tube videos but my husband and I have a Homestead in Saskatchewan, Canada. I love your kids and don't see mine enough. So it makes me feel good to watch you all and learn from you. We have been homesteading for only 4 years.
This was great! Funny, and honest, and real, and inspiring. Our channel was dormant for 5+ yrs and we were demonetized last year, which was a huge bummer....but we do appreciate all those old videos now that our kids are grown and our dogs have passed on. It feels SO much harder to qualify now than it was in 2009!! Spending hours filming/editing to get 46 views is soul crushing. 😂
I love how kind, positive, and honest this video is. You showed real statistics, time and tracking, and that's really nice to see. It's difficult these days to get accurate information on youtube and to really LEARN new things is almost impossible. A lot of channels are pure entertainment that want to sell you on a vibe of farming, or cooking, homesteading, and not how to actually do it, especially when you have a question, or experience a failure. A lot of this stuff is easy to get started, but hard to master; at least that's been the case in my own journey. I came to your channel to look at pigs, but found this vid, and this is the one that gets me to subscribe. Plus, since you mentioned it, I just wanted to drop a little "Thank you, this really educated me." Stay fresh.
I just discovered your channel, dear people. Y'all's relationship and communication style between each other has encouraged me in my marriage. I don't have a homestead... yet. March on!
Great video! We’ve been on RU-vid for a little over 2.5 years and have really enjoyed the experience. We love meeting people through the channel and it’s a great way for us to stay connected to family & friends who live all over the world! I’m pretty sure my grandparents are our #1 fans 🥰 Totally agree with the recommendation that you should only start a channel if you want to start one! It can be a lot of work but it’s a great learning experience and a way to share your passions with others ❤
You guys are growing a nice channel And doing an awesome build project! Keep it up, you are close to being able to go full full time than it might seem!
We just moved to 33 acres of raw land. Starting a year long substance abuse program for young men ages 18-25. We are building a working farm and a trade school as well. It's such an AMAZING adventure.
We started 2-3 RU-vid channels about 8 years ago. We were not consistent enough. We had too many channels and too many ideas. I used to be very super outgoing and now I’ve become much more private. I enjoy the purity of your content.
Hey guys thanks for doing such an honest video and of course for sharing your journey and inspiring all the folks out there like us. Best of luck with your new homestead.
Thank you for sharing this information. I've recently begun my channel, primarily as a way to share what I learn as I become more self reliant. I know it will take time to monetize, but it gives me something to work towards.
There are people that love criticizing others for one reason or other. You ask 10 people to do the same simple thing and each of them will do it in a different way. Keep doing what you are doing, you guys are doing a great job. I love watching your Chanel, along with few others, to see how I could improve and find ways to get to closer to having my own ‘perfect’ homestead. (😂😂😂 is there even something like a perfect homestead? - but you do keep going and dreaming) keep doing what you are doing and don’t worry too much about others.
This is full of awesome information. I’m closing in on 1000 subscribers and nearing the 4000 watch hour mark but it feels like it’s taking forever. But it’s cool to hear your story of how long you’ve worked at your channel and how much work it takes to keep putting out videos year after year to get to the position you’re in. Thanks for the inspiration to keep moving forward!
@@Homesteadyshow I started posting back in 2019 but more as a hobby, documenting our journey. But lately I’ve started putting more effort into our videos and posting more consistently as I gained more subscribers.
I totally agree with the holistic approach here, I see other people growing at faster rates and look at their videos and think, I could do that... but it's not what I want it to be...
I found you guys and Im so glad BECAUSE yalls videos are so positive! haha! Even if its a negative title yall as humans are so positive that I know yall will put a positive spin on it lol Love you guys! Yall have also inspired me and my husband to consider documenting our future homesteading!
Thank you for the video! I've been on RU-vid since 2018 and I still haven't met the requirements for the algorithm. But on the opposite side, I don't do it for the money (I make none) or to make other people happy. I vlog what actually happens on an Urban Homestead and what real life looks like. Just do your journey friends! You'll be surprised what a change happens in your life and it's fun to look back on.
Great advice. I just started mine to document as we build our new homestead. We are not close to family so thought they can watch. I’m just using phone. Thanks!
People are just so mean sometimes. I tell my kids all the time that they need to mind their own..... and defend others when they are getting kicked when they are down. I totally enjoy your channel and as for the Negative-Nelly's....... just block them! Our kids just bought some acreage and have asked us to move along with them with the 'understanding' that I will babysit, garden and keep their flocks fed. I am stoked to be able to finally have a taste of homesteading life. Keep up the great content.
Y’all are making good content, keep it up. My favorite is the Mario chicken ones, Lol. My son now plays Mario with me on an old Wii. It’s so cool because I used to play the original Nintendo one. I told the kids the other day that when someone is being negative, remember what Luca says: Silencio Bruno! 😊
I like the fact you mention should you get camera and laptop because of today's phone capabilities and their cameras. I'd agree that no, a camera is not a great purchase just starting out. And there are great free options for editing software as well (I use Davinci Resolve) that you can (with some tweaking) run on a bit older of a system. Which takes care of the need for a new computer/laptop. And I believe that starting a channel should be something you want to do (creative outlet, documentation, etc.) and not necessarily because you're looking for a revenue. Doing it because you want to will probably just turn out better in the long run! Great video and best wishes!
I started homesteading, and I'm in the learning stages. I still don't have my property, but I am working on it. I am anxious to have chickens and goats someday very soon.
Hey Homesteady Y’all are one of the channels that inspired me to start my channel over two years ago. Haven’t really watched much of the Channels I like since starting my own channel (just to busy now). Ive been a little discouraged of my channel growth here lately and this video of yours showed up this morning and really helped me see a better outcome for myself. Keep up the good work and im gonna make sure I watch the new homestead episodes. Thanks a lot y’all Myke Fowler
Myke, keep at it! But do change things to see what works. You have 300+ videos, that’s a good amount to judge what works better or not. Take some time to dive into your analytics and get an idea of the topics that do well, thumbnails that work, and what KEEPS people watching (like more percentage viewed) and double down on that!
Me and my wife have been slowly been growing our 20 acres over the last 5 years. From buying it as bare land to now having the house and a barn and water lines back to different areas it’s been quite a journey. I’ve been making videos since the beginning of this documenting for outselves and also sending updates to my now 86 year old grandmother. Now with having more and more live stock every year we are going to start a channel and try to make better quality videos for her and our other relatives. Last week we purchased a bred jersey heifer due in march. You both have been so helpful and inspiring thank you and I hope to make my videos half as good as yours!!
YOU KNOW YOU CAN EDIT BY CLICKING ON THE FAR RT, IF YOU THING BEGGING NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED TO BEGINNING... BC IT'S A REALLY GOOD COMMENT. but i would like to say that u bypassed a few things in growing a Farmstead on video, the transformation of the earlier days! So if i say jump in & do it now , don't you think that might be a good idea? and 20 acres is big enough to really be interesting too!!
Really appreciate this candid, honest chat. We are thinking to start a new channel as we start our homestead, just vlogging our experiences and seeing how it goes. Curious how heavily edited your videos are. We are thinking to keep it more basic than our current channel. We only use an iPhone and MacBook currently, so no cost until we upgrade if we choose to do so.
I have a small youtube channel about our farm and cattery. I really appreciated this video(I'm not monitized yet😔) You both are so sweet and funny. I love your channel.
Thank you! We moved to our homestead last February. I have wanted a farm for as long as can remember and finally I have it. Your videos on the new homestead have been great. Thanks Maria from @brunskillfarms
