Trees can take an astounding amount of carbon out of the air, which is good, because we need to do that times a trillion.

MinuteEarth It’s sad that others are able to be smart and have the technology to plant 20 million trees and yet where I live in Paden City WV, there not able to have $1,000,000 to replace our whole water system for 15 different citys and tons of county’s. The water is making everyone retarded because it has a chemical that is poisoning to the brain, and having to install 2 filters to the house and use bottle water 50% of the time, can any RU-vidr make a challenge to clean the Ohio river

@@scythefencer Grown up trees don't absorb as much CO2 as growing trees, if anything, the ideal is to grow trees, cut and use em in a way that don't release a ton of CO2 and plant more trees in place and repeat the cycle over and over, preferably using the wood to replace things that do emit CO2, like plastics.

Great video!! The stadium size of CO2 fit into a tree is a great visual! It is a really great campaign. You mentioned that trees are 50% Carbon by weight, but I think you forgot about the water weight in trees. They are around 50% water weight, and then it's accurate to say they are 50% carbon of the dry weight.

I'm really glad this channel also discussed the larger picture of climate change and planting trees in context. Fighting climate change will require a lot more than simply planting trees; we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, planting many trees won't be as effective if we don't ensure the trees survive for a long time. A dollar a tree might make the global problem a bit too simplistic. Nevertheless it is a commendable effort to plant so many trees. Love your channel!

I think the idea of planting trees is noble, and necessary. Just ponder how many have been lost to fire recently. I have seen the sickly trees that The Arbor Foundation sends out. You are better off gathering seed and sowing them, or starting your own arbor group. 👍 You might even have access to a master gardener program member. What a great school program.

My favorite fact about trees is they are immortal. With no outside, interference such as fire, insects, and humans of course, they could potentially live forever. Forever! Who's planet is it again?!? Lol They can also communicate and share nutrients through thier roots helping out neighboring trees. How friendly is that! :)

There is a little thing which people miss: cutting trees makes room for new trees, that will absorb more carbon as younger trees grow faster. And just cutting the tree does not immediately release the carbon it stores - if it is used for example in construction, then it will likely keep storing carbon for another 100 years at least. Probably more, assuming the building will be maintained correctly, termites won't attack that building and it will not be destroyed by accident (in a fire, for example). The wood that goes into furniture will probably last at least 10-20 years as well (people do not change furniture that much). And if its not the cheapest furniture available, but something with solid build, nice design and good resale value, that furniture may last very long as well. So we should keep out wood industry going and actually encourage use of wood everywhere where possible. We should not cut the natural forests with high biodiversity, though, as this usually releases more carbon in the long run - because a lot of animals that live there will die off, and they are built of carbon too. But many forests that are the source of our wood were actually planted (or re-planted) by humans and they do not support that much biodiversity, meaning cutting & replanting them is not going to cause serious changes.

I initially had doubts that reforestation was the best way to mitigate climate change, but I researched into the issue more and actually see how it makes sense. I made this post for those who have similar doubts. TL;DR In short, planting trees is actually one of the most cost effective sequestration methods (temporary or permanent), and is actually quite compatible with methods of long-term carbon sequestration. It does not solve the problem directly, but reforestation will be very helpful to give us time before disaster strikes. By the time the trees have grown, our CO2 emission rate will likely be plateauing or dropping, and by then our technology will be able to efficiently sequester the (now solid and concentrated) carbon. In the best case, if we successfully reduce emissions early enough then it will prevent a disaster from happening at all. In the worst case, it will give us more time and weaken the blow until emissions inevitably drop even without intervention. Why not reduce emissions? It's correct that it's far more important to prevent emissions of CO2 in the first place. But we all know the main problem is that there are strong economic pressures against that goal. It costs about $10 to $30 of energy to produce 1 ton of CO2 from fossil fuels [1]. The same amount of energy costs more in renewables, especially if upfront research or deployment costs are included. Also, intervening in the energy industry (via taxes, tax credits to competing renewables, etc.) will directly conflict with the interests of big corporations. But sequestering carbon while it is being emitted conflicts less with their interests. Perhaps the average citizen will have to pay for the sequestration, but they wouldn't use less energy from their provider, so they shouldn't have direct reasons to object to sequestration. I'm not saying that we should give up on transitioning to renewables. I'm just saying this transition can be slow, and we can't afford to be slow now. In a sense, we need to buy "extra years". Attempts to achieve this does not necessarily conflict with a transition to renewables. Emissions eventually will stop rising Of course, emissions rise because countries develop and standards of living improve [2]. But this actually cannot go on forever. Assuming that people don't increase their emissions indefinitely (unlikely as awareness of climate change rises), there will be a certain standard of living with the maximum emissions / person. Poorer communities will use less technology, and richer communities will use more efficient technology. Emissions will stop rising once the human population stabilizes and all countries reach this standard, which admittedly might take a long time, but it means that we should not expect indefinite growth. In fact, I speculate that it will plateau at 2 times the current emission rate. Scientists predict [3] a 30% increase by 2050, and while that's bad 30 years is a long time and global population / standards of living may be stabilizing around then. With decreased availability of fossil fuels and more economic capability to look to renewables, emissions should eventually should drop even without intervention. This means that the "extra years" do not just delay the inevitable. With enough time, the crisis will end even if we do not intervene (though not intervening will definitely hurt). Sequestration is pretty cost efficient It actually costs about $20 to plant enough trees to eventually absorb one ton of CO2, including the management costs [4]. This is pretty similar to the cost of energy for one ton of CO2. The Earth should have enough unused land to support 900 million hectares of forest [5]. If we account for albedo effects [6], we get in the ballpark of 150 billion tons of CO2 when fully used, or about 4 years of "extra time". We frankly don't know of a better method of sequestrating carbon after it mixes with the air. We do know pretty efficient methods of storing the carbon after it's extracted from the air, though. We already have carbon capture & storage mechanisms that are designed for power plants. These can be used on a biomass power plant to sequester carbon from trees. The carbon can also be converted to superfluid and buried underground. This sounds advanced but we already use this technology today, albeit for a different purpose (extracting oil). There is plenty of capacity to store a huge amount of CO2 this way [4]. By cutting trees and performing sequestration, we can buy even more time; I speculate 10 to 15 years of "extra years". These "extra years" will be useful in the transition to renewable power, and once the transition is in full force the "extra years" directly reduce the ecological impact of the CO2. Cyanobacteria can do the job in a smaller footprint, but costs more to establish and if you want to maximize the biodensity you need to use some energy for recirculation. There's also a nutrient cost, but you should be able to connect such a system to wastewater treatment facilities and utilize their excess nitrogen. You could also read direct flow from Farmland. Effectively solving both the issue of algae blooms - which doesn't really do any good since the decomposition will kill fish resulting in more carbon released and absorbed - and the issue of global climate change.

We should reduce the amount of carbon that power stations release. There is already technology available for that. The gas will pass electrified mesh, causing it to be positively charged, then a pair of metal plates with a negative charge would attract the gas molecules. This aimple system can make the gas exhaust *cleaner* than the air around it. Singapore has already implemented this system and it has shown its effectiveness.

20 million trees is ONLY 0.002% of the total trees we need!! And even achieving the 100% which looks impossible, wouldn't be enough at the current pollution level so we'd still need to change ALL those consumer habits and industries!!! C'mon man! You sound way too happy and positive for the real message you're giving.
