Earn a lot of money, then a child should give plenty to your parent especially if they are living below poverty line . If only have a small monthly income, then just give small allowance to your parent to lessen their suffering.

Some of us grew up with financial difficulties where parents had to limit their children allowances to single digit for a week’s worth of school allowance. Some of us had to skip school meals or going out with friends and adapted to not ask about extra allowances or favour from our parents, in which they grew stingy within the household but huat ah with others outside. So in the end just give what you can afford even if it’s little rather than nothing because you are taught better than that.

I give all to my mother, if I want to buy something useful I will take from her.

After completed O level and started to work low pay job. I give monthly allowance to my parent and I also pay utilities bills. Yearly I give my 1 month bonus to my parent. CNY increased my allowance to my parent due ang pau money distribution. Not much savings.

Ah... Parents Do think about whether it’s too much or too little allowance when they give it to their kids...esp if they are on a budget. The generalisation all parents love their children is also not realistic. Besides that, there are parents who are not fit to manage their own money. You give them money, they go and gamble it away or give to scammers. When they insist to continue to feed such addiction, it’s a bottomless pit.

I find that giving 10% of your salary is the sweet spot.

It depends on your income I think and whether you are providing for your parents in other ways. For me, I didn't give my mom a lot of allowance because I was the sole provider for my family when I finished school. I paid the bills, paid for my mum's flat in cash cos her CPF was completely finished, paid part of her medical bills and also gave groceries $. I had to keep a portion for myself as well because I took an education loan and had to repay that. This continued even after I married and had kids. Now that I am a housewife, I cannot provide financially but I provide in kind. My mum stays with me and I look after her and my kids.

Remember as a parent ur kid is ur responsibility . Don’t expect ur kid to return u the favour .

This is really irrelevant but why do people always look at supporting our children as an investment? Stop or the return on your investment will always be mismatched against your expectation. Why? Because your children will think they are throwing good money after bad when the time comes for them to support you.

I give when my mom asked. She is a hardworking mother with understanding how to control expenses. She seldom buy anything just for herself. I give her $500 approximately which also include my household expenses.

I don’t really know how it is in Singapore but in the UK you usually give maybe 20-30% of your money to your parents while your still living with them (we call it ‘rent’ though not ‘allowance’) but when you move out it usually flips around and they actually might help you to start buying things for your house

actually children giving parents money will also build a relationship for the next generation as they will learn n do the same...imagine if your kids see u never give money to their grandparents..then when they grow older...they will do the same to u ..then don't cry...

Singapore is a wealthy country. Did the elderly not save for their retirement? Working people need to save for their own retirement and raise the next generation.

My husband is the only son working out of my in_laws’ two sons. We have two children so in order to help I give to my mother and father in laws too in addition to our households expenses for over 20 years. Obviously nobody cares the giving from daughter in laws.

frankly although parent always say .nevermind don't need...but frankly...when they began to raise u...they spend alot of time n money .. even if we are not born with a silverpoon and earn million over dollars a month.. a fillial will always be there .

Filial piety is important in Asian culture! Imagine your parents brought you up so many years, its only human nature to give back to them when you are self-reliant.

A culture that ensures parental care when they're no longer able to work is a commendable culture. We should not expect our parents to work till they die. They've worked for decades to feed us, clothe us, send us to classes, pay our tuition fees, take us overseas for holidays, pay for our wedding, give us gifts when we get a new house, help care for our babies... if we add up all the amount they spend on us alone it will be more than $200k. If they didnt spend this money on us they'd have kept it for their retirement. It's shameful that we hear all these people being so selfish, so reluctant to part with a fraction of their money on their parents who have raised them and spent so much on their upbringing!! And to think that when they die, their house will be sold and money from the sale will go to the beneficiaries, mostly their children! So why cant the children lighten their parent's burden when they've grown old and cant perform as well as the younger workers at the workplace? Parents have sacrificed so much for their children, why cant we do the same for them? If the government passes a bill to deduct part of our salary to give it to the parents, i will support it.

That depends on how is the relation between the parent and children. I heard there are parent abuse wife n kid and disappeared n only appeared for money. Want to sue the children not giving money or not letting him stay with them. Trying to make big news. There also many children all along been paying own school fee n home bills. A lot of people give their parents very little money .. as low as $100 to $200 no matter how much they are making. Younger generation now feels that they should be not a sandwich generation .. but bear in mind that their parents did used up a lot of their money on their kids and have little savings for themselves. They rather spend money on material stuff then repay their parents. I think it is not a matter of whether your parents are well off or not. Its just an excuse to give little to nothing.
