How much chlorine does your hot tub need? To keep your hot tub water sanitized, your chlorine levels need to be at around 3 ppm. Anything much higher can cause skin and eye irritation and corrode your hot tub surfaces. And anything much lower means your water isn’t sanitary. Unfortunately, it’s easy to overdose your hot tub with too much chlorine. Knowing how much chlorine to add depends on the size of your spa. So here’s a quick guide to how much chlorine to add to your hot tub.

what if we have an outdoor hot tub that is covered 905 of the time? is chlorine the right choice?

Hey Matt, my hot tub is outside but it is under cover and doesn't come in contact with direct sunlight. Would you recommend bromine for this?

You can use either bromine or chlorine in this case

Hi! I watched hours of your video's, but struggle with my chemicals anyway. I used chlorine tablets, shock, PH- PH+ etc, but after just two days, my PH plummets, i can use PH+ almost every day. My neighbour recommended AquaFinesse Water Care... A bit more expensive, but just adding one cup every sunday and 1 or 2 slow chlorine tabs a week keeps my water chrystal clear. What are your thoughts on these 'all-in-one' chemicals?

Are you using chlorine tablets in your hot tub? That can be too overpowering and cause your pH to drop (the tablets are acidic). If the AquaFinesse works for you, go for it! It's just not necessary if you get to the root of the issue.

@@SwimUniversity yeah, to try to get the chlorine around 2ppm, but it plummets really quickly after shocking... How do I keep the chlorine levels at decent value, without slow chlorine tabs?

Once the CYA levels get high, is it ok to use liquid chlorine as long as we’re careful and don’t spill it on anything except into the water?

It can still discolor and damage your shell and rubber fittings once it's in the water

Both my hot tub and swim spa warranties say that using the trichlor tabs will void my warranty. I've had other hot tubs in the past that were the same. Why is that? Can you help me with that?

It can over-chlorinate the water and high chlorine can damage hot tub components

My hot tub seems to need WAY more chlorine than you've described. I find the chemical maintenance of the tub to be challenging.

How large is your hot tub and how often are you using it? It could be your other chemicals might need adjusting.

Same here. We have a new 1000 litre (approx 250 gallon) hot tub that we have been using daily. I add 1 Tbsp chlorine granules to get the levels right at the end of the day and by morning the chlorine level is at 0, and I need to add more before we can use it. This has been a daily thing for 2 weeks, and I have a feeling that it's too much. What other chemicals could be off? My test strip shows everything else in range.
