@@Chunkylurker As badly written and rude as you comment was, I will reply to it anyway. Any freaking dimwit can covert this to USA figures, as you go or at the end by using google. If you're not smart enough to figure that out, you shouldn't have a horse. I would learn how to write, which most 6 year olds can do properly, before even thinking owning a freaking horse! OMG! People who can hardly write at all also can barely read, but you need to be able to at the VERY least read and fully understand Wikipedia articles, and websites about feeding, vet care, etc. If you can't do that your horse will literally be f*cked. So if I was you I would go back to grade 1, and put in some effort this time.

I’ve had my horse for seven years and one of the biggest expenses I’ve found was getting a saddle to fit him. I went through three cheaper ones before I finally realized they were never going to work for him. Experimenting to find the right tack; bits, reins with the right feel, lunge whips that are comfortable to handle and so on, they all quickly add up too. Thought your breakdown was very thorough but sobering 😁🙈

Yes! This is so true. I already have a few pieces of equipment that won't fit or don't work and I'm about to change my saddle so you are spot on 🤣

I’m watching this with my non horsey friend and she is sat next to me, completely gobsmacked at how much things cost, how much things can vary, and then she turns around and says to me “Seriously do you spend anything on yourself, or do you actually have anything left to spend on yourself after Billy?!?! I kinda giggled and just said “Sometime yeah and sometimes nope - depends if he needs his veterinary medication and supplements, if he does I tend to eat Super Noodles or beans on toast, if not I tend to have a cheeky takeaway 😂” Gotta admit though - would not change anything for the world, I love the horsey lifestyle, even if more often than not my diet consists of energy drinks, coffee and Super Noodles 😂😂

Its the vets bills that are crippling. I didnt realise I had the wrong insurance for my horse. I had him from 16m old until 6 years old. He was my total world. He got really ill and I didnt have right cover for him. Between him and the farrier I just couldnt keep up the bills that were mounting up weekly and this care was going to continue for at least a year. The only way I could keep him alive is to give him back to the lady I bought him from originally. We ended up parting on bad terms and I havent heard anything for 2 years. He was my very best friend but I had to do what was best for him. I will never get over losing him and desperately want another best friend but since covid horses and dogs etc are selling at ridiculous prices xx

What an absolute gem of a channel! I’ve had limited exposure to horses over my life despite being in farming and living on a relatives’ farm which is a livery yard this past 7 years . I’m a biker and the similarities between the relationship between us and our bikes and horses and horsey folk is is very close- as is the similarities between the cost to keep a big bike and a horse these days! I found your delivery exceptionally clear and helpful and I’m sure you are an excellent instructor. Wishing everyone all the best with their equine money pits and l admire the dedication you all put in 👍

Love this update. Thank you Rhi! Recently downloaded your spreadsheet - before you updated it! - but have adjusted mine to match the costs you've put in here. Sobering but as I don't have a horsey background it's so so helpful! Actually when I figure that I'm already spending a lot on lessons the rest I have to find for my daughter to get a pony isn't SO unachievable. There are sacrifices we'd have to make - cheaper car, holidays etc - something to aim for!

If you have an interesting horse, be sure that the staff have enough skills to cope. Also, make sure that you are happy with the attitude towards horses of your intended horse residence. Third party insurance is a great idea.

Very interesting. I can say that I pay as much for my horse as I do for my house each month (maybe a bit more). Haha the only thing I would change is, I'm looking for a house with property so I can keep Lemme at home with me. Hopefully, in the next two years. 🤞🤞

So helpful! I'm moving to the UK from the US next year... some things seem way cheaper there, but I am surprised at the average full livery cost. I pay 1150 USD now for one horse and 750 USD for the other (different stables) so it's about the same! Thanks so much Rhi!
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 3 года назад
From the conversations I've had, the main differences between here and the US is that it's more expensive to compete in the US and that you tend not to have the equivalent of "DIY" over there, only full board. It's so variable around the country so it just depends where you end up!

@heyits3lla960
@heyits3lla960 3 года назад
@@RidingWithRhi A 3.5T will include the payload(horse weight, driver, tack, fuel)which can vary but will generally be around 750-1200kilos. Which after that’s added will make up the 3.5T. You can obviously go under but have to be careful not to go over which is when you’d need an additional license. Hope that helps 😁😁😁

100% true. One thing people must consider if they take this route is the cost of mortgage (if applicable) and the cost (and knowledge needed) for paddock and fencing maintenance as well as water, electric and so on. Definitely pros and cons to both!

I’m probably really stupid but is diy livery just your horse living on your property so if you had stalls, fields etc on a property you own?
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 3 года назад
Not a stupid question! No, that would have a livery cost of £0 because you're not paying anyone else. DIY is when you pay rent for a stable/field at a yard and you do everything else yourself - e.g all the chores. I believe it's not a common set up in the USA
