I’m glad someone is finally talking about the “market”. Because I’ve sold customs that have been bought for crazy amounts. Like I did a custom alborozo stablemate and he sold for $65 and then I did a similar one a few weeks later and it went for $35. So watching what other people are getting for their customs is important too. And up til now no one has mentioned it lol

@Storm Mist eBay is where I started! But Facebook also has many custom sale groups you can use too! eBay takes a lot in fees but if you’re just starting out, it will show you what kind of business you can have. My first horses sold for 25ish dollars and the. They were getting up in the 90$ range before I hurt my hand and can’t do them full time anymore.

its most definitely by 'brand' ive tried selling a stablemate custom for $20, even had it up for auction with a $5 starting bid once and neeeeever got any interest because i'm a nobody while i consistently see ones with gloppy paint sell for more. eventually I just gave up and gave it to my friend for a birthday gift

I pay up too 100 on my breyers but if it’s a dream Breyer then I may go a little over, although I did have a couple of horse only at like 40-50 dollars, maybe like 3-5 of them were 40 dollars

I love all your horses. There was foal that one of my friends had repainted but she did not like how she painted it so I offered to repaint it. It turned of sooo cute and was one of my best reprints nut sadly I had to give it back to her.

Very informative, thank you. Right now customizing is a hobby for me, I really enjoy turning a beat up model into something fabulous for my collection. Your work is wonderful; good to see you are having success as a professional model horse artist and I hope that you are chosen by Breyer to make an original sculpture someday. Best wishes for your future!

@@DeeJayBeStudios Very true! I have a 13 year old daughter who wants a career as an artist and I'm trying to guide her to a field of art that will result in a good living so I recommended this video to her. Right now she's saving her money to purchase a resin at the Artisan's Gallery at BF. Stay fabulous!
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios 4 года назад
That’s awesome. I wish her the best. It’s hard to recommend working full time as an artist because it can take the fun out of it. As a hobby it is really profitable because it pays for the resins & the supplies. But not the gas bill. Haha sometimes it’s better to keep those things separate.

Wow. These were so much, acting casual about getting hundreds of dollars for model horses. I mean I think you are extremely lucky to have this talent and make this much money.

I apologize if this is not the place to mention. I have over 30 Breyer horses that have never been in a child’s hands that I have no interest in learning how to sell. Would anyone be interested in making me an offer on them.

Do you ever make custom models for people who either own a horse or lost one (like me) ? I am very interested in getting a model done of my deceased horse WindDancer and I just love your work. She was my baby 😞

Excellent video,sage advice,and it applies to pretty much any form of art an artist sells.You should value yourself,and value your art,but you do have to be a realist,and know that regardless of how much time and effort you put into it,you won't get paid for all of the effort,the blood,sweat and tears you've put into it.Congrats on your sales,by the way!

Great video! I want to create my first custom over the winter. I'm so shocked at what people will pay for these!!! Wow! I'm curious, what purpose do customers buy these for? Just to display them? Or do they put them into model horse competitions? Are most of the buyers model horse collectors? On a different note, do you have a video that talks about the different tools you use (that are listed in your comment under your video). I don't understand what all these tools are used for and wondered if you have a video that collectively talks about them?
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios 3 года назад
It’s mostly collectors who collect, some show. But there is no monetary value in model horse showing. It is for ribbons only. It’s like stamps, or fancy cars. A pleasure hobby worth a lot of money. Just brings joy. But also kind of like fine art, there is pride in owning top artists pieces. I do not have a video explaining my tools. I definitely should touch on that.

If the idocus is the traditional one you kept, I bet he'd sell for like $1,500. It is a super popular mold. If you ever sold him you would make tons of money haha. He sure is a stunner and you did such an amazing job on him.
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios 4 года назад
I was offered lots of money when I finished him, but I love him too much to part with. He will remain as a part of my customizing archives. He shows well and holds a very special place in my heart. Not all of my work needs to sell, that’s part of it too- keeping some pieces for yourself. Thank you so much for the comment.

You said you’ve been doing this for around 2 years at the time of the video, so my question to you is how many pieces have you sold/created? Watched this a few days ago and it just occurred to me that an answer to this could give more depth to the quality or amount of practice it might take to get to the level you’re at.
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios 4 года назад
At the time of filming I had only done 20-30 pieces within the 2 years of various sizes. I believe my extensive 10+ years experience in traditional art gave me a leg up. Artists at the very top generally have a good 10 years experience under their belt. It depends on person to person but I definitely agree in doing multiple pieces. Not getting too caught up on just one. Finishing it and going onto the next. That’s how you really learn :)
