How much weight can your Chevy Silverado tow? That a big question that most truck owners need to know and it has to be accurate. Google isn't much help. There is a VIN-specific weight specification sticker in the truck’s door jam of every 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. In this video, I show you EXACTLY what the towing capacity on YOUR truck is. There are many factors and the numbers you read on the internet are the BEST CASE scenario.

One minor correction, Chevy Dude: When doing a Gross Combined Weight calculation, you DON'T factor in the tongue weight. It is already there, as it is part of the weight of the trailer. You DO factor the tongue weight when you are doing a Gross Vehicle Weight calculation of your tow vehicle to make sure you aren't exceeding Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, because tongue weight is the portion of the trailer weight that is transferred to the tow vehicle. You can't just do one calculation and be done. You MUST do a Gross Combined Weight, as well as Gross Vehicle Weight, and Gross Trailer Weight calculations to make sure you don't exceed ANY of them. Yes, your Gross Combined Weight Rating is generally the limiting factor, but it is possible to be within GCWR and still exceed either GVWR or GTWR. Also, for the safest trailer handling characteristics, you should ensure the Tongue Weight is between 9% and 13% of the Gross Trailer Weight. Glad GM is finally doing this, it makes getting things right very easy. You don't have to do detective work anymore to figure out exactly how your particular vehicle is equipped. I'm also glad they didn't put a max tow capacity number on the sticker. That way ignorant people won't go and load the truck down, and then still put a max tow weight behind it! THERE IS NO QUICK ANSWER PEOPLE!!! If you're going to tow, you MUST do the math! Every towing situation is unique.

Good idea to go by vin #. Most people will factor in engine and transmission combos but forget Axel and wheel combinations that can drastically affect tow ratings

When you have your truck and trailer loaded up, go to a truck stop and weigh your rig. You can get combined weight and separate truck and trailer weights. Fill your gas tank, water tanks etc all FULL. Do the same thing with truck and trailer empty, then you can literally walk across a scale when loading your truck and trailer and have a very good idea of how much weight youre at. This works really well for travel trailer. Stay gold.

Fantastic video! All trucks should include this. One question: does the gross vehicle weight include a full tank of gas and all the fluids? I could see gas and fluids accounting for another 300-400 lbs. Just a thought. Thanks so much!

Hey Mike, I think you forgot to factor in the SAE standard that most suppliers are subscribing to; it states that the vehicle is full of fuel and all liquids(oil, antifreeze etc) and that you have 2 x 150lb people in the cab already.

Theres so many factors to take in, some trucks dont even come with a hitch, mine didnt..the dealer didnt even know what size of class, I had to choose a class 4.. If I was going to hall heavy duty weight's, also spring airbags, cargo accessories, add-ons an so on.. theres so many models and packages avable for one brand and the numbers change fast, it would get very expensive for them, just by adding a few pounds for those accessories/packages/kits can up.

i believe that tongue weight is factored in for payload but it is not factored in for towing. The tongue weight is added to the actual structure of the vehicle itself and so it affects payload directly. But tongue weight doesn't need to be added to your trailer weight or towing capacity. It is the downward pressure on your vehicle and frame which again, affects your payload but not how much you are pulling.

Your formula is great, but for example, in my case I also need to calculate the dry tongue weight of my RV & apply that formula to the towing capacity of my Truck Example= Total Gross Weight of the RV minus 10-15%, it'll give me an approximate tongue weight (give or take 5%)

When "kicking the tires" and shopping for a truck, the easiest "10 second" method is GCWR minus GVWR equals maximum towing capacity. In the example of the truck in this video, 15,000 GCWR - 7100 GVWR = 7900 maximum trailer weight. This assumes you have the truck fully loaded to it's maximum payload capacity. You still have to do both a Gross Vehicle Weight and Gross Combined Weight Rating calculation to make sure you don't exceed either one.

Do you by chance know the max weight rating on a brand new suburban i have a 8000 pound travel trailer and a large family that goes allways so a truck is out of my option. We currently own an escalade and really would rather just go back to a chevy. Everyone overcharges when a escalade pulls in because they " think you are rich"

The V6 is underrated. It is only 20 ft lbs torque less of the 4.8. I tow a 14,000 5th wheel in Fla but dont go over 50mph and no hills. Dont drive more than 10 miles a day. Runs fine. If I go long distance I would upgrade to a 2500 truck. I saw a post from a highway inspector and he said ratings dont mean a thing. Its all about the tire ratings. IF you are within tire load ratings you are good. Most of these ratings are BS because the standard axle is the SAME on 1500 and 2500 within a few pounds. Its all shocks and springs and some hd engine parts.

I don't understand why one would subtract the tongue weight from the towing capacity. Isn't that weight being transferred from the trailer to the truck effectively making the trailer lighter by the same amount?

"Haha" Good job, sadly most folks arent gonna do the math, yesterday I seen a bran new full size pickup and a (bran new) 40+footer (RV), flipped on its side on the freeway.. people need to pay closer attion to towing, for the safety of all the loved-ones while on the road.. If your not gonna do the math at least, check in with a RV store/manuf..dealer/weight station thats local before heading out on your trip, most places want you safe and coming back safly 👍👍

20+ inch rims automatically reduce towing capacity by 2000-5000 lbs as the low profile tires cannot handle the extra weight and pulling forces. If max towing was 9000 lbs, and you added 22" rims and those tires like the one in the showroom, that would take off approximately 3000lbs from towing and cut payload capacity in half. Example: a standard 16-18" rim with a stock truck tire size typically has a load index of 110-120 (2300-3000 lbs per tire). On my 2006 Silverado with 265/65-18 tires, it has load range of 114T, which is 2601 lbs per tire (the T is max speed 118mph) for a total of 10404 lbs max weight on those tires, which means better towing capability due to higher weight capability (based solely on the tires). This leaves a lot of overhead since the truck itself has a curb weight of around 4200 lbs, lthough the short wheel base and low curb weight limits towing capacity more than the tires and anything else would. The exact same tires in a low profile 245/50-20 is only 102H which is 1874 lbs per tire, 7496 total (the H means max 130mph). For my truck this means 7496-4200=3296, minus 500 lbs of me driving and my stuff = 2796lbs, versus 5704 lbs with the 265/65-18 tires. The only way to compensate is to spend a LOT more money for a higher weight rating tire, but even then you run the risk of blowing tires (both driving normally and especially while towing) due to the low profile and extra weight.

Their are low profile tires with different load ratings, problem is they ride like crap with no sidewall to absorb shock from bad roads. My 2500 Denali had 20's and was rated to tow 14400 5th wheel or 17000 tounge pull. You have to adjust your air pressure to the max load setting which transforms them to rolling rocks.

Every trucks website does, but literally every single model and variation can legally tow different weights, depending on trailering package, cab size, tire size, truck weight, 2wd, 4wd. The numbers given on the websites are approximate, hes giving you the vehicle specific rating, how much that ACTUAL truck on the lot can tow...

Hey GM. I have a great idea. Trailer towing 7,000 lbs. Now I don’t have to do any math. You guys try to make everything more difficult than it need to be. I have a 2016 F150 4 door 2wd with the 2.7 ecoboost with 3.31 gears. I don’t know or care what Ford say my truck will tow. I have towed a 4x4 Tahoe on a Uhaul trailer 7,300 lbs.

You are either trolling or uneducated about towing. Why do you care how difficult it is to get the number? You just stated that you ignore it anyway! You are also lazy and don't care about being within legal weight limits, so why even bother watching or commenting on this video. Some people, as he stated in the video, haul often and for business. Staying legal with the weights makes a difference when you have to go over scales, have a business name on a truck, and want to avoid tickets and insurance problems in the case of an accident. A friend, his wife, and teen girls are getting commercial licenses. They haul horses that can be worth $500k each and their friends have been stopped and not allowed to drive the truck and trailer away and instead had to get a commercial licensed driver. What you might get away with (especially for personal use) and what is legal are two different things.

@@blackericdenice For a short distance, with no other good choices, I would. I towed my trailer at 7k or so with a 2005 1500 chevy 5.3. The previous owner towed all over with the same truck, and I quickly figured out that my 3/4 ton had a jerry rigged hitch that was not safely going to handle the 1180 pound tongue weight. It was 45 miles home. I would not take a long trip or routinely use such a light truck as it is a matter of wear and tear and safety. I'm considering buying a 2020 2500 duramax truck. While I have done many upgrades to my 79 C20, including a built 406 sbc that should make 525 tq, it just isn't great for towing a trailer that is 8k loaded and 11.5' tall. The cargo capacity numbers on the 2020 2500 are the same as the 2019 3500 single tire trucks, if the little info out there is correct. I don't want to potentially get a 5th wheel later and be right at the weight limits, even though some people get away with it. Again, you critiqued the weight sticker in the video, yet don't seem to realize they can give a max weight, but the load that people put in the truck will reduce that max weight. You also don't care how much it can tow or if you are over. Hopefully, you have the braking power to stop in an emergency(you aren't that much over) and know how to be safe with towing and don't end up causing issues for any others. This doesn't seem like a video fit for you, even though you watched and commented.

It's unfortunate that a half ton crew cab 4WD truck had so little cargo capacity. With a family of 5 and the tongue weight of my 6,000 lb GVWR RV trailer, it put me over the 7,000 lb GVWR of my Silverado. The RV weighs about 5,000 lbs.

A coworker thinks a half ton dodge with the tiny diesel will be great for me and tow my trailer. Well the gvw on my trailer is 9k pounds and the tong weight is 1180 lbs. I have also towed it with my 79 C20 with a built 106 sbc estimated at 525 foot pounds of torque and also with a ford 6.0 at 565 tq stock, but with a tow tune and bulletproof setup. No way would I want a gas engine or half ton, let alone a baby diesel at 420 ft. pounds of tq. The 2020 2500hd duramax should have a cargo capacity of over 3000 pounds and 910ft lbs of torque. More than needed, yes, but far better suited than a half ton or older 3/4 ton. The 2019 2500hd diesel only has 2,000 pounds cargo capacity, which is not enough for bigger 5th wheel trailers. I have heard of many stories of people being right at or over the limit because loaded trucks have little cargo capacity left.

Tundra have been in production with the same engine and frame for the past decade. Given any vehicle that long they will have more chance to improve their quality tremendously. However, that will change once Tundra comes out with it’s new v6 turbo hybrid. Sounds like a headache already.

No it absolutely does not you fool! And even though the exact truck he did the math for is 9,000lbs, thats not the highest it can go, thats just how that truck is optioned. A chevy 1500 can be optioned to tow up to 12,500lbs, your tundra would break in half if you tried that.

Its Its about time most people overload there 1/2 ton when it i comes to pay load and towing you can't tow 9000 pound with 1600 pounds of payload

People will still do it, always. No video will stop them. Only losing everything they own from a lawsuit when they're found to have been negligent in being overloaded will they learn, but it'll be too late then. So many laws for truckers but nothing is done about the ticking time bombs known as half-ton weekend warriors.

Yes we know youre a big tough MANLY MAN RAHHHHHHHH POWERRRR!!! Chevy still puts v8s in every model of their full sized trucks, and they will continue doing so for a long time to come, its merely just an option for conservative people. A max trailer package on a silverado can tow 12,500. Thats more than every before. Dont be a buffoon.

GM is junk! After 3 batteries in my 2015 Sierra they finally recalled it. Of course they said it wasn’t a problem. Besides that the 5.3 is junk with the variable engine dynamic. Your selling Chevy so you’re getting screwed! Junk 100% good luck to y’all that buy one. Glad I went back to Toyota
