In this video I talk about what I feel a UK self employed gardener can earn per year. This is only my opinion and views.
You may want to watch a previous video on marketing and how to obtain new customers quickly.

Thank you for inspiring me to push forward with a dream I have to become my own boss, work with mother nature and stop playing small. I just started getting into horticulture but came in as a farmer on a measly £10ph. The farmer had me doing the gardening side of things and boy was it a lot of work and I was there for a couple months before I became despondent from feeling exploited - hedgecutting huge hedges and walking away with £80 max is exploitation, so thank you Maxwell, also thank you to all of the gardeners commenting, all of your feedback and comments are like market research, thank you all so much. Claire xx

The best bit of advice I was given was not long after I started out was to charge as much as you can. Not every client buys on price. Anyone that asks me how much a job is before I have had a chance to think about it, I turn away. I charge plenty and that lets me invest more into the business.

Thanks Robbie, great advice. That’s something we could all learn from and do better. The first working day of January 2022, all my prices are going to be reviewed, 80% will be going up and customers notified. If I lose a few , so be it. Thanks for watching and your comment.👍🏻

I had a client like that recently Robbie, turns out he's a professor at Birmingham university on over £100, 000 a year. I tried explaining to him about the value I would bring to his garden, my 25 years of experience, public liability, etc. He just glazed over, so I said thank you for your time, but your not for us, onto the next one.

Great video Rob. Your a natural in front of the camera. Some people are saying its pressurewashing your going at on Wednesdays. I doubt it. Invest in a power washer I'd say always a wet day during the week and best time to do it.. so makes sense to have as a sideline 👌also decent money not as regular as grass cutting but can be fitted in that one day a week. Weed and feed treatments .Also knapsack sprayer drum of good weedkiller will be a good shout I'm sure you have customers who have weeds or stoned areas don't take much room in van and could charge £10 plus depending on job all adds up mate. Hi Rob I started my own garden buisness about 4 years ago in the Northwest of England near Warrington and Liverpool areas and like you started £100 a day then following year £150,now in year 4 i make around £230-£250 per day on average mainly grass cutting on very good days can earn £300 + my best day was £330 in a day it is possible if you get the right type of gardens but one tip I have found is NEVER NEVER EVER undercut or compete on pricing with other gardeners just walk away if someone wants you to lower your prices just say no as I get so many gardeners phoning or texting me pretending to be potential customers trying to find out my prices its a hard job especially in summer months just know your value.

i have just started again after 10 years away. i do more than lawns if you add more to what you can do then you can earn alot more. i do the odd tree a week that adds on anywhere from £200-4k for a tree. hedges and ladder work is alot more in general i work 4 hours a day 5 days a week and take home over £200 in those hours i have worked as little as 2 hours and have made £3k its all about the right tools for the job and doing it efficiently and having the right training to do more than just lawns. I have one guy that does lawns for me and during the summer i aim for £400 a day as i get £250 for him going out as well as me working other jobs. There is plenty of ways to make more money than just lawns. A general garden clearance is £200 for a single man £350 for a 2 man team its all about pricing and knowing what job is worth what. I can do pretty much anything so i am lucky but you guys could make alot more with a few tickets. Bit of landscaping building sheds. I do planters mud kitchens all sorts just fill you're time with stuff that will make money i work 70 odd hours a week and have 3 kids so im always busy but i have paid off my house within 6 years but working this like so ill be able to chill soon and let people go work for me. Not bad going for someone thats only just started again for a years work. Not saying area but most weeks i am for £1500-£2000 i do alot of jobs. During the peak of last summer i wasn doing closer to £4500-£5000 a week with a 3 man team it easy done. Find old folks homes but they wont want petrol tools and same as contract work they dont want petrol tools and want to see all you're tickets for each tool. So the way i do things is advertise i have silent tools and the amount of calls i get is unreal cant keep up. Need about £5k-£6k for a decent bat set up that will last unless you're just a little solo guy then go for a lower range
@jackrbaugh5813
@jackrbaugh5813 2 года назад
do you charge by the job or by the hour? i feel like i could make a lot more if i charged for the job but i dont know if people will be mad that im only there for 30-40 minutes. im getting good customers who are always pleased with the results I just dont know how I can physically break past 100 a day without charging £20+ per hour which will just put me far too expensive in comparison for my area.
@Aeru_Moose
@Aeru_Moose 2 года назад
@@jackrbaugh5813 I have had 6 months experience working for a comapny and in my opinion, charging for the job is best, when you frist get 2 a garden you will probably spend more time getting the garden 2 a standard you like, then from after the first few times of going you would learn the garden and cut the time down.

Your brilliant bud. Two months ago I watched your videos and it's given me the inspiration to set out myself. Got a Stihl combi tool, motor strimmer blower and hedge cutter. I haven't looked back since. Paid off my investment and making profits now. My best day was, well two days. 13 hrs @ £500. So just shy of £37 an hour! Strimming & hedge cutting including digging up some beds. Thanks for the inspiration to get out and earn from the green gold!

Wow, what a diamond in the rough this video is. I’ve been watching gardening videos for tips etc more in the business side of things for many months, if not years. Finally have a decent bit of investment saved up to take the plunge in to the industry. This video really sealed it for me and gave me that final nudge to buy the basic equipment(second hand to start). What 5 tools would you recommend everyone starting out should have? I’ve got a mower and strimmer being delivered on Saturday so anything after those two pieces

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices exactly mate , my tiny lawns just strim, mow and blow are my best ones no more than 20 mins each , granted they have to be close together to get this kind of money , similar principal to window cleaning , not a big sum of money but it's the amount you can knock off in one hour and closeness ect , I'm only in my second season and pricing and timing has been my biggest headache tbh , slowly coming together for me , like emerald bren has commented in the section , it takes at least 5 years to get really profitable and slick , totally agree with that

I built my earnings up over a few yrs and probably got to 2.2 to 2.5 on your 1 to 3 scale. And decided quiet quickly to rethink things after a huge tax bill! My accountant saying I either have to employ someone else or be more inventive as nothing will change because you can’t physically work More hours in a day as a sole trader. I now work a 4 day week have a 3 day weekend which is fab for the boat etc.... One change I have kept Which gives good money return is I run two sit on mowers which I cost out at £100 per hr. but with that comes Big bills maintenance and up keep . One mower is 3 yrs old and is the go to mower and the other is old and Shabby but is my back up and belief me you need it if your first mower develops a fault and you need to cut 2+ acres that day. If I was to start doing it all again I'd certainly do it a bit more like the way you do yours. Rob ur a good man. Cut down ur travel time and focus ur customers in one area is one way. Another is keep ur customer base and grow it but take someone one even a student over the summer holidays when grass grows the most. While u mow they strim and leaf blow. Get a bigger mower. So many service u can offer pressure washing weed killing. On the commercial side u can salt their foot paths in winter. People are getting lazy around their houses.
