How much does it cost to drive with a Thule carrier on top of your car? - VOTD

In this video I did a test to determine how much it cost to travel with a Thule Cascade carrier on top of my Volvo 850. I drive 26.5 miles and used my ScanGauge to analyze the fuel cost difference with and without the carrier.
It seems that it cost me 1 mpg to have it on top of my car. That is about 10 cents per gallon. A 2200 mile trip cost about $10.
I also wanted to note that the carrier is very quiet. We could not hear it at all.

What a great idea for a video, thanks. My wife and I have been trying to get a Thule for our wagon for sometime but something always takes priority. I was concerned about loss of fuel economy. The critical factor that affects fuel economy on long trips is speed. Drag builds with the square of the speed (velocity). When you double the speed, the drag is 4 times more; not twice as much. To get better mileage you can slow down. Accelerating smoothly has a big impact with the turbo charged engines. When my daughter drives my XC 70 she gets almost 1 mpg less because she drives with a heavy foot. That's the way kids drive when dad is buying the gas. My 2005 XC 70 gets about 24.6 mpg on the highway with three passengers and luggage.

I'm going on vacation next week and installed the cargo box in advance to make sure everything was ok for the trip. In my 1.0 3cyl turbo focus fuel consumption went up by atleast 2.5-3 l/100km and that's without all our gear in it ... I'll be getting the fuel economy of a V6 with a 3 cyl on this trip.

I'm in the market for a roof cargo box and I would agree that the gas savings is minimal in comparison to the luxury of having space inside the vehicle. Now still trying to choose which make and model roof box. Onward, Ho!

Robert, I'm curious about the in-car fuel economy readings, and the info switch, how easy it is to set up. I've heard I need to get the code for my car, but how would one input the code?

Not only is drag a factor, but lift force is reducing traction. The air pulling up on the underside of the carrier will cause some minor losses in traction at highway speeds. If the carrier were mounted directly on the roof I'd expect your fuel economy to only decrease by about .5 mpg. The effect of the luggage rack would be so close to your margin of error that it would be virtually undetectable.

Some reports complain about the rails.

I'm not a Volvo owner, so I don't follow them much. But from what I know about aerodynamics it would be best if there was no air gap between the roof and the carrier. Whether this is done by mounting it directly to the roof or by using flashing and gaskets should not matter. So if the manufacturer doesn't recommend direct mounting, just find something to cover the gap without creating a pocket.

Strapping the carrier to the top of the vehicle would cause more damage to the car than drag ever would cost you.

@@RobertDIY pls ignore the possibly negative role Pickens plays in that monumental comedy,. The role is irrelevant. He speaks with a great regional American accent which to me is a pleasure to listen to when all we often get are the "mid-Western mush" US TV speak accents. Proper regional accents are what makes much US culture more interesting to me as a UK resident.

Those read blocks are manufactured to last 1 million miles. You may have a fuel pressure problem.

Man, my S70 barely breaks 25 mpg. I guess the major evap leak that my car has is the cause?

Another thing to look at are your tires. Check the inflation pressure. Lower pressure gives a more comfortable ride but lowers fuel economy. Some tires have more rolling resistance and cause lower fuel economy but they usually provide better traction for cornering and braking; "sticky tires". Toyota Prius and other hybrids come with special tires with a harder compound and lower rolling resistance to maximize fuel economy. Low profile tires on larger rims can reduce the wheels rotational inertia and that can also increase fuel economy. My XC 70 gets about 25.6 mpg on the highway with Michellin Premier LTX tires which is about 0.8 mpg higher than the original Pirelli Scorpion tires. Also, check you wheel alignment. Even a slight misalignment creates drag. Check that your brake pad aren't dragging on the rotors.

I literally just bought a used one today. I was wondering how bad would my fuel economy be for my highlander. But the gap between the car and the cargo box is greater than yours. Thank you for doing this video.
