I joke that the painter's job is to make everyone else on site look good. I found this really useful and reassuring. I work in the SW and charge the bottom end of the day-rate prices you quoted for the region. That was really good to know as I don't keep up with other folks' day-rates. I pretty much agree with all the other customer advice here, especially regarding paint purchasing and having the rooms clear. Great vid. Thanks.

Hi, good video, I'm in North Wales, I'm charging good rates, recommend jobs due to cleanliness and politeness, never bother the customer for nothing, I always try give a price, but day work if they want or if it suits me better than price due to time consuming journeys like distance parking or 3rd floor up etc. Well done and keep up the good work 👍

I’ve learned over the years that very very few things that are cheap are also good. There are exceptions but not many. When it comes to paint I look at it this way. For a typical bedroom it will probably take 5 litres for the walls, maybe 2.5 litres for the ceiling and half a litre for the trim so 8 litres. Call that £80 (maybe 90) for a quality brand like Johnstone’s Trade. If it’s decorated once every 3 years that’s less than £30 a year which is about 10p for every day that the paint stays up. That sounds like pretty good value for money to me. Cheers for the video
@SuperChalkster

decorate every 3 years? jesus. in 30 years your half half inch of paint on the walls, lol. and i dont personnally think johnstones is a good quality brand, its decent for the money, but there is better paint.

For me an average room needs prep, ie removing furniture, curtain poles etc. Filling holes,cracks & sanding down woodwork. I give myself the first day to prep everything & paint the ceilings two coats. 2nd day cutting in & two coats on all walls. 3rd day any undercoat & I use Dulux once for woodwork. 4th morning, any 2nd coats to woodwork.rehanging curtain poles,tiding up & leaving room clean & tidy. However my hours working for myself. Start 9am half an hours lunch. Pack up at 3.30pm & leave at 4pm.

Since returning from lockdown I ve had a lot of clients saying they would get the paint. OMG. Even though I suggest they go to one of my suppliers. Nightmare. You are right cheap paints don’t help anyone. More coats, more paint, more time and an angry painter on site . I don’t know what it is but the current generation seem to be clueless when you say please remove items from the room prior to painting. I want to paint not spend time moving all your stuff. You turn up and hee haw has been moved. Older folk seem to understand. Anyway good points you make. We are constantly “ educating “ people nowadays. I get people asking me how much to paint a room. Well I need to see it to see the condition etc. If you tell them a day rate. They look surprised and shocked initially and then even more shocked when you say that does not include materials. How can it include materials when we don’t know what sundries and paint is required. A lot of patience required with people it seems. 🤔. Cheers.

same with flooring. went to see a teacher and husband about a week ago. 3 different levels of concrete (50mm between the kitchen and dining room where the wall has been removed) , very old house with no DPM and they want karndean. Can't understand and wont listen to me telling them that it's impossible to just sort of bodge it so it looks 'good enough'. 'we're not too bothered with the finish'. Well wtf do you think the finish will be like considering karndean is 2 or 3mm thin! You'd expect a teacher to have a brain. DIY videos on the internet showing how 'easy' and 'affordable' it is. Rouge traders on tele All the cowboys out there too People have accepted that you have to haggle over the price of everything too. 'How much if i pay cash' and so on There's 0 respect for tradesmen nowadays

garnhamr yeah I think your right. The TV shows don’t help. Not sure if people think your trying to con or trick them when your explaining why something want work and give a good result. Weekend there same shit. They didn’t go to Dulux, went to B and Q. Two coats on the walls. Looks shit. A lot of guys would have said ah well it’s had two coats. I told them you need more paint and I will give it another coat. Look at me like it’s my fault ! Like my poor workmanship or something. Ffs. Why want the two coats be enough ? Cos it’s shite paint with no opacity. False economy. Ppl are getting harder to deal with.

Couple of years back a retired copper who I was prepping [yes, just prepping...] a HSL for insisted on picking up the woodwork paint himself, even though I said for him not to bother and let me do it. For some inexplicable reason he wanted to do the doors and woodwork himself, some sort of king of the castle 'I can paint just as competently as you' kind of mindset. I'd not long painted a new kitchen and extension in the same house. I told him to remember to get solvent satinwood to match the new work in the kitchen, and because he was adamant to play some kind of role like the plonker he was I left him to it. Predictably he got fobbed off by one of the less diligent staff members at the suppliers and got the wrong paint. After I'd cleared off I went back to see how he'd gotten on with the 'finishing'. It looked like he'd painted the doors with white poster paint from the Early Learning Centre. Obviously I'd never take a similar job on now ever again with that kind of foolish meddling busy body of a customer, but was an interesting and somewhat embarrassing learning curve at the time about who not to work for.

These are labour rates. And they are fairly accurate but if you want someone that runs a reputable business then you pay the price it’s cost for them to run a sustainable business that reliably delivers value. And that might include employing good people to work in your house at these labour rates quoted. Don’t expect to pay cost price. If you are a decorator that doesn’t run a pricing model that includes overheads, labour rate, materials and a small modicum of profit then you are probably wondering why you don’t make much money. Good video to get the cogs moving. 👍

Interesting video but there are many factors and conditions which affect the day rate or price for a job etc ,personally i work on a day rate only thesedays .In my early days as a decorator we used to put money on every can of paint supplied and also on wallpapers too but thats just a tiresome chore now so do not bother .Many factors such as the distance from home to the job and how long will i be stuck in traffic ,the type of job wanting done and also the quality of the work required ,one quality level does not fit all jobs trust me .No point doing endless preparation work on a grotty relet of a renter . I have a base line of £150 per day 8am till 4pm that is ,Manchester area by the way .This figure can change though due to something i call personal factors or in other words how much i like the customer ,or how easy is it to access the property such as ground floor compared to higher floors etc ,its also governed by the area im heading to .On average its 150 and above because if you charge any lower than that you get the effect of people thinking your a cowboy so the more you charge the better respected you are .And finally heres something else to think about for any people reading this thinking of employing a Decorator ,if and when the decorator calls to your property to view your job and your a miserable bleeder that dosnt offer them a brew the day rate goes up yes up ! and a word of warning ,never ever upset or fall out with your decorator because we always have 6 more jobs waiting to be done so can walk away from yours in a blink of the eye leaving you stranded and the moment you tell another decorator your previous guy walked away your branded as a problem customer to be avoided ,word goes around the decorators grapevine trust me .Hope this helps guys .
