THIS!! I keep seeing similar videos of Portugal, Mexico, etc getting expensive for tourists, and my heart breaks for the locals being priced out of their homes. Nothing wrong with traveling to experience a place or culture, but I honestly hate this new culture where expats are moving to a place, buying up/building up properties and pricing locals out. 😔
Yeah! And it's rich that RU-vidrs who profited making video promoting Bali/Canggu like the best/cheap place on earth are now complaining that there are too many people. They will soon move on to a new undeveloped place and contribute to fuck it up faster too
People like you changed it you put your money into a country and then youre surprised it changed. You constantly would show how bali is awesome then youre surprised that theyre are more tourist !
Funny how you’re saying this but people from Bali appreciate the foreigners who live there as they increase the economy which in turn allows them to have greater incomes
To be honest you put your effort to promote this island for other people as well. So price increase and traffics and changes are the results of what you are doing as well.
Visiting Bali can be nice. Lived the for 5 years and honestly it was nothing like before...so I had to move out. Not just because prices were way higher but because it feels the island doesn't have the same magic. Of course if you go to places like Amed or Lovina you will be alone, but then everything around Canggu and the Bukit is western and for westerners. Gyms, yoga, spas, restaurants, clubs, partys, etc. Where is the culture? Where are the locals? Just working for us bules? It feels terrible. And of course I love to go to different restaurants every night, but when it's too much it's too much. Also the audacity of some people living there now...honestly. Rudeness, not following the rules, being nasty towards locals. It's unbelievable. Found myself being more angry than happy because of those things 😕
I lived there recently for just under two months. No one can pay me to live in Canggu. I had to venture out to other places which were not infested with rude, nasty, foreigners/tourists (specially Russians) to have a good time and experience the culture and beauty of this magic island. I hope they cancel the VOA for Russians as the discussions are under way for that.
I'm currently here and have a 2 month visa, I'm paying to move my flight tomorrow and go back to the UK after 2 weeks asap. Beautiful island and people but I don't wan't to sit in a bar listening to scooters, honking and breathing petrol fumes. Yes, there are quieter places, but it takes too long to get anywhere.
Just got back last week. This video is soft. It doesn't really convey the choking traffic. Or sitting in over crowded cafes where every table filled with Russians, restaurant staff are overwhelmed and you wait almost an hour for a coffee. instragram spots are mob scenes, people waiting for hours to take a picture. Lines and lines of vans shuttling you around Nusa Penida for pictures!? It was crazy and really unpleasant. He didn't cover Ubud, it took us an hour to get across town (less than a kilometer / on a scooter)! We went East, not great there either. We did find some solace above Lovina in a the North. The spirit and beauty I enjoyed before COVID, it is gone. Gone. We were there during this year's rainy and low season. I want to send big heart blessings to anyone attempting to go during the high season this summer. My recommendation? Cancel your trip. Can an island melt down? It is going to be a nightmare this year. You've been warned. 😮😢 We couldn't wait to leave.
It's like people can't help but replicate the Western comfort they ran from to live the Bali experience. Then all of a sudden Bali isn't exotic anymore, just another crowded place. Which destination will get westernized next?
Or Canadian in Calgary I feel like I'm in Africa or Malaysia or central America. It's odd to feel like a minority in your own country. Hope people tell the Slavic vacationers to be kind or go home. Sounds like balis best days have come and gone as a secret place to enjoy culture nature and ethnic foods. Flight price reflect that. Oh well that happens when digital nomads wanna make living selling there vacation pictures.
funfact: influencers like you, who sold bali to the world for years, are the main reason for the high demand and therefor a major factor for the price increases 😏
Who sold bali to the world for years = who put money in your bank account while leaving a trail of ruined places in your wake. Screw this guy. That comes from someone who lived in Indo for 15 years. I hope to god that he doesn’t go out and ruin more islands there.
As an Australian, Bali is/was a popular holiday destination for families especially for those that love the beach and are into surfing. Flights used to be so cheap, and you could stay at a 5 star resort for less than $80 a night. Now it's so expensive and unaffordable, and I wish I travelled more back in the days before Instagram, RU-vid, Facebook, Digital Nomads, Covid even existed.. that was the real Bali back then! :(
Im sad now :( I wish I travelled when I was younger. Im 38 and havnt gone anywhere out of the country since I was 17. I still want to travel better do it while Im still in my late 30's before the world blows up.
Rich RU-vidrs like yourself are throwing money around in various destinations around the world driving up prices sharply, what else did you expect would happen?
Not only that, it's more the fact that he is freaking filming everything and showing the attractive price, he did it again here. Of course people gonna jump on the cheap price and the extra demand allows for more room for that price to grow.
There has been a huge influx of moneyed expats into Bali the last few years, including yourself. In a few of your videos several months ago you covered your building of your hotel. If you get lots of expats investing lots of money and more and more people being drawn in by the hype then everything is going to cost more and continue to increase in cost. As long is there continues to be high demand like there currently is then supply vs demand will continue to push up costs.
Interesting video - thanks for sharing. I've been visiting Bali since the early 1990s, visiting a few times a year. And yes it's changed a lot over time. I talk to my older friends who were visiting/ living there back in the late 60s and 70s, and they have some wild stories to tell - but still their experience was FAR DIFFERENT than anything I experienced, or that we experience today. Bali is an evolving place - change is inevitable. That said, I have a lot of local friends there and your very neutral tone of the change with Russian folks arriving is not how my local friends have expressed their feelings of the influx. They feel many of the new arrivals are arrogant and rude - treating them like servants or slaves. So a quick PSA: when visiting Bali - please be kind. Please be considerate. Please don't be rude and treat anyone poorly. You don't do any of us non-locals any favors by being a jerk. Thanks in advance for your consideration. 🙂
russians are the definition of rudness and arrogance. Most of them ousted from russia so they don’t get drafted to the army. But they still support war and genocide of Ukrainians
As a Ukrainian who understand russian language, this is so true. The way they behave is very shameful. Dominate or be humiliated is part of their culture, so when they encounter such kind and generous-souled balinese people they choose to humiliate them. I wish more people in the world could understand russian language for a day and really grasp what is going on in their heads culturally and how they view other nationa
You're a victim of your own success man. You've definitely helped to grow Bali. You're the main reason I plan to head there this winter. I appreciate all your vids
Agreed bout him, also please be be kind, and respectfull, and at least learn proper Indonesian language. don't just go here and take advantage the kindness and welcoming nature of our people and culture. cheap doesn't mean no dignity. that said, I hope you'll enjoy your time in Bali.
Kind of surprised you bashed "western woke policies"....Woke implies getting people to become aware of other peoples cultures/sexual preferences/religions......Thought you would support something like that.
This is what happens when sustainable tourism is not promoted and local governments do not put restrictions into what expacts can do in countries like this. As a Portuguese citizen I can say that the exact same thing is happening here. Food prices skyrocketed, rent prices are already among the highest in Europe, locals can't afford to live in the cities or downtowns anymore, local culture is slowly disappearing, portuguese language is not the main language that you hear when you're walking the streets, and many more examples that I could write here. Social media platforms and travel based influencers had a big slice of responsability on this. Everybody is constantly promoting a country because of its beauty, of its people and so on, but never talk about the sustainable ways that you could visit or even live in a foreign country without destroying its local economy and culture. The future path of countries like these is already written and we have some examples in prior locations that suffered a boom in tourism before. What happened to that places? Prices kept getting higher and higher that eventually it was not worth anymore to visit or live there, so a lot of hotels, villas, restaurants and other businesses were doomed to close and were just abandoned, transforming a place that was once known for its tourism into ghost towns. Christian, I follow your work since 2016 and me and my girl love it but we can also affirm that if travel based influencers do not change the way they promote all these locations, every gem location in this planet will be destroyed in a matter of a few years. Governments won't do much because they will always seek for those fast tax returns, but they tend to forget that those tax returns won't last long. If you are willing to make a change and create a more conscious approach to travel, me and my girl are willing to help you and who knows, be part of your amazing project and start a change in this industry before it is too late. I know you are conscious and an empathic guy that can not sleep well when problems like this one start to get very very serious, in fact, one of your major businesses might be in danger as well unfortunately. I hope you can read my words and think about them 🙏
Nice video, good job. I'm from Ukraine. And I've been your subscriber already for five years. It was not nice to hear you link Russians and Ukrainians when we are at war and part of my country is occupied by Russia... I'm glad you can go home to your parents at any time, but because of the Russian war, millions of Ukrainians can't go back and are looking for a place to live during this difficult time. I'm among them.
"People who are tired of Western 'woke' policies." Merriam-Webster definition of "woke": "aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice"). So does that mean then that Bali is now a good place for people not too interested in racial and social justice? That would be the saddest and "heaviest" change of all.
Tired of “woke politics”? Can you define woke? This just turned me off from your entire channel and I’ve been following for years. What an unnecessary addition to the video.
the rude Russians and the digital nomads have ruined the place. the digital nomads are the new yuppies. i remember how great it was before most of the rice fields where paved over. thanks for the heads up.
Everyone watching RU-vidrs promote Bali during the 2 to 3 years of Covid has led to this huge influx of demand now that travel restrictions have lifted. The whole world wants to move to Bali. It's quite ironic and sad that RU-vidrs have ruined it for themselves and others. Hopefully, the demand slows down substantially soon and Bali returns to something close to what it was in 2019 before the pandemic.
people like yourself changed it! so stop with all the whinnies and stuff. i was in love with bali before all these nomads and content creator came in, invest and put western price on their property.
He hasn’t. It’s how he makes his money. He’s a P.O.S. All this is performative. Guy couldn’t care less. Self obsessed. Trail of ruined places in his wake. But as long as the money and views keep coming, right?
One thing I want to correct in the video. It's definitely not true that the cost of cooking at home is the same as in the restaurants. You can get fresh produce at the local markets for cheap!
This is so funny to me. It’s as if people don’t understand a simple supply/demand curve. A place has tons of RU-vid channels talking about how amazing and cheap it is so everyone flocks there and then they are surprised that prices soar. Really?!?! 😂🤣😂🤣
My wife and I moved to Bali in 2019 and got to experience that nostaglic time you mentioned. It was amazing! Since then, we moved back to the States and now we have a 2 year old. We look forward to hopefully moving back in 5 years when these growing pains are a thing of the past. I would love to raise my daughter in a much more peaceful and welcoming place.
I’m genuinely curious about how Balinese people feel about foreigners buying land and building. Can you do a video focusing on that aspect? Besides digital nomads, do you provide any services/opportunities to the Balinese people/community?
I get your point, but isn’t this situation the same everywhere (touristy destination areas I mean)? Like Mexico for example, a lot of westerners buy places there for investments (rental places) or many parts of CARRIBEAN, or other Asian countries, well, pretty much tropical destinations. The only difference in my opinion is that these other places I’ve mentioned are bigger and actually plan infrastructure for growth and what not. Bali on the other hand isn’t that big and even though tourist demands are growing or a lot of expats are flocking in their infrustructure stays the same , I don’t know, perhaps it’s a problem with their own government being corrupted and they just put this money to fill their own pockets instead of making life better for local people. I’m not too familiar with their politics but that would be my guess. All in all I don’t know how this benefits the local people, probably it benefits them in some ways but also hurts them in other ways. 🤷🏻♀️
But this happens everywhere, you’ll never go to any country that doesn’t have foreigners living there ,building and buying property? Mostly everyone in America is a foreigner coz they all came from different countries.
Well in his last video he talked about he was looking to hire at least 3 Indonesians for his business. So Christian is also making sure he's doing his part. Props to you bro 👏🏾👍🏾
Dont do the research they really should be doing when travelling to another country with a very different culture than their own. Everyone hangs around in the same instagram bubble and wonders why it costs more....its the same all over the world.....the tourist areas are always more expensive, even for the locals. People NEED to STOP being led by influencers and have the holiday or new home they only ever dreamt about.....
I guess "the locals" as he calls them (I believe they prefer Balinese or Indonesian) are here for the pleasure of him and his western friends he never mentions the sometimes devastating impact of inflation on the Balinese people. Poor him and his western friends they have to pay more for housing, the fact that they are making it impossible for many "Locals" to find good affordable housing apparently isn't important as long as they continue to serve he and his western friends
No, all you went and did is hit the nail right on the head. Like perfectly on the head. This guy is scum. Met plenty like him over the years. Never cared a lick for local Balinese or Indonesians at large. Background props that cook the food, clean the leaves up, do the laundry, drive a motorbike. Difference is, they at least just did their thing back in the day and then left. This guy stays and just sets up shop, ruining the place a little more (or a lot more) every time he makes one of these performative piece of crap videos. I hope folks begin to wise up. Maybe put this guy in his place.
Superb video Christian, Bali definitely has changed a lot but it still is a magical place with the most incredible people🥰 We'll continue to go back and with some luck, have a home there just like you one day 🙂
I wonder why so many Bule live in Canggu and Ubud even they feel expensive? Why don' t just move out from this 2 places and starting embracing like a Local Indonesian life rather than bring their Western Mindset?? Maybe move to Gianyar, Denpasar, or maybe live in Banjarangkan?
I lived there with an Indonesian scholarship in 2013-14 in Canggu, 500m from the beach, spent around 300$/month altogether for rent, phone, scooter, and eating out every day!!! (Never cooked at home), partying, clothes, yoga, dance, singing 3-4 times a week. Travels were extra. It was extremely cheap back then. I loved it! :)
Bali first time 1997. No restaurants on beach at Jimbaran two on other side of the road, amazing seafood, lads climbed a tree for coconuts to make us a cocktail Sorry you never experienced real Bali. Nigel and Yani Mason could say the same about me. Yanis bar awesome.. That was when the world was a simpler place and people spoke with each other not text messages. Think you don't understand what you have missed. Must add it was dear to fly then. Cost 3k with flights for and rooms for 8 days for 2 pax.
Funny! "We talk about the WHY in few moments!" Just show a picture of yourself and you've pretty much nailed it. I went to Bali in 2004 for the first time and back then it REALLY was paradise. Years later guys like yourself started pouring into the country and pretty much ruined the prices for everyone, especially for the locals! ;-(
If you live like locals, cooked your own food, buy your ingredients in local market, and live in modest place, with kitchen and bathroom, you would only need $500-600 a month. Most probably way less than that.
this is expected, if youtubers and influencers go there, then all people will follow and create more demand and higher prices.. you are actually driving this by your videos!
this guys footage doesn't show you all the trash and garbage on the beach and in the water. Go for a swim in any of these bali beaches and you'll have disgusting trash wrapped around your legs within 10 minutes. Go for a walk on the beach and you'll be stepping in heaps of garbage. A lot of these drone shots and stock footage is very misleading.
@@peteiovene9177 I was at one of the best hotels in Seminyak (Alila) and they don’t even let hotel guests swim in the water cuz it’s so filthy. Went to several beaches that looked like heaven on RU-vid and in real life was so filthy and some of them even reeked of sewage in addition to the garbage everywhere
@@lostleblanc I often go to Bali for diving and still feel the peace and tranquility in the Bali area for diving such as Amed, Tulamben, Menjangan. Bali offers many different places for various destinations for tourists, who like beach, ricefield, culture, art gallery, party, nature, spiritual/meditation, surfing, diving, hiking, off road, etc.
We just spent 3 weeks there and it cost WAY more than we thought it was going to be! I loved Bali and it was a dream destination for so long...but a little overrated... probably don't need to go back. But driving through Ubud in the rice fields on the little back roads might be one of the most magical things we have ever done!
My thought exactly. Went last May. One of the most overrated places I’ve been. Shit was instagramized to the max. It left a really bad taste in my mouth. That being said, I’d love to go back but I’d go explore the northern part of the island. PS. I also really enjoyed driving around the backroads of ubud. Very magical indeed
Bali is an ideal place to purifing and relaxing our soul, mind and body. Its a place to get closer to your sprituality, nature and kindness of people. With those qualities, its understood what to offer come with such price. Although foreigners might find the beach and scenary in Bali is similar to those in Thai and Philipine, but Bali is in different catagory of uniqueness and elegance. As Indonesian, we were hurt badly recently by rude and uncivilizad foreign tourist who disrespect and put dirt in our gem island. Hope the higher price in Bali can filter the garbage tourists from coming in.
Well worded. Bali is so special; I’ve never come across such deep spirituality and peace that affects how people live and act. Think about it everyday and hope to return to Indonesia. ❤
@@camali_ch Sure, you can google it also with key words 'tourist in Bali bad behaviours'. Recently the cases like : 1. German girl interrupted Bali dance performance naked, in public secret area. 2. Denmark lady was showing her vagina around while riding motorcycle in busy road. 3. A Rusian guy tried to make chaos by fighting with local people who blocked his way to enter Hindu religious ceremony.
I watched a documentary about how the local people are being forced to move into the outskirts, losing seafront properties, their homes because hotels and investors are buying up premium land because of the booming tourism industry. At what cost though? Price of living has been driven up to the point that locals struggle to afford a comfortable life in their own country. Tourism is a double edged sword.
Are you sure there were local beach front houses? When batu balong and berawa was still undeveloped, there were mostly empty land and bushes. Local houses are mostly along the main roads and gangs. Beachfront houses have high erosion and maintenance costs. Anyone selling their houses become millionaire in USD and could move to quieter residential area with bigger land. Most locals or workers from other islands live in Denpasar with lower rental and food prices.
I prayed about this 6 years ago when I visited. I prayed Americans didnt come and ruin it like they have America with the greedy selffish mindset. Housing and food prices here are crazy here after this plandemic. Ugh
Well pointed out the current issues in Bali. Just Canggu is sick, were in Pererenan, it was still ok. But Canggu and Ubud is so overcrowded, it is not even high season. Can not quite understand the Bali hype and I have never seen so many superficial people in one place.
You tube content creators, Insta models constantly promoting Bali have definitely played a large part in the increased prices, traffic congestion etc Slightly ironic Lost Leblanc complaining about the change, he needs to look at himself and his business model.
Definitely plays some part! But I don’t subscribe to the idea that I should be found guilty of it. Everyone who visits bali on vacation and tells a friend promotes Bali. Everyone who lives in Bali and posts a photo on their Facebook promotes bali. At the end of the day we’re all just promoting a place and an experience we love. Nobody is here trying raise prices on the community, we’re just trying to share this place with others.
I first traveled to Bali in 2015 too and returned this year and I couldn't believe how much Canggu has changed. It was kind of sad but I still enjoyed myself. I suppose like every other popular tourist hot-spot it's never as good as the first time you experience it. I felt the same way when I returned to Thailand.
thats funny I also went to Bali last month, and the last time was in 2015. In 2015 I was in Ubud and my friend told me to come to Canggu if i want to get away from the crowds in Ubud! ha ha how things have changed. Canggu now is just a different experience. But not for me.
Still pretty good value, especially compared to NYC. But there were already too many Russians there 5 years ago. I can’t imagine there are even more of them right now. Don’t think I could fully enjoy the island with that..
Insane prices. I went to a warung in local areas. The price I paid is almost 3 times what I paid in a similar place in Penang. Penang is far more developed, cleaner, and more beautiful.
Nah... we don't need any more digital nomads here. Bring back all nice tourist who actually wanna experience our culture. We don't need more foreigners sitting in cafes just because it's cheaper and they don't get a bad look if they didn't tip.
I kind of feel like you brag about building hotels and villas for you and your social media buddies, without even considering the impact this is having on the locals cost of living and the bali environment. It’s kind of shameful
@@bungelonlevel2862 they can do enough? A silly thing to say. The Omnibus Law put the financial power in investors and foreigners to buy resell property, that’s why it is becoming so expensive. This is not good for local Balinese people and it is the same thing that has been happening in Portugal. Really ignorant
Island of the God's is now Island of capitalism and sophisticated marketing to extract as much $ from tourists. Long term visitor since 1993, this year might be my last
I pay 260 dollars for two bedroom local house 5 min from the beach by scooter, located near to Balangan and Dreamland beach. you can live cheap and nice in Bali if u want and know how. Canggu is basically little western city in Bali but anyways, been here long enough, lived in Cangu for about 3 years and honestly I don't know why people still like it, horrible place. Better come to Uluwatu, real beaches and surf is here, amazing nature and clean air. Crazy developing already as well tho, going to be next Canggu:D
Your video is about the south of Bali, like it is all there is. You have focused on a western world of not doing anything like what Bali once was. But I.m pretty sure that is what you are into. No real life but what can you get. Exactly what is destroying Bali.
I was just there ... for 2 weeks, cut it short by ten days. not because of the price, but because it was horrifically busy, stressful and just felt like a massive tourist trap . . beautiful place but way way way too busy everywhere you go, Changgu / Ubud both waaaay overrated in my opinion. The mountain areas are cool and have amazing views, locals are super friendly in the villages. If you have never rented or ridden a bike... Bali is NOT the place to start and oh, wear a helmet!! :)
Same. We were miserable. Compared to 2018 before Covid, the magic is gone. Got some solace in the hills above Lovina. Otherwise, it is a massive, tourist machine grinding all the magic out of Bali
Just came back from a bali holiday for 3 weeks, last time I was there was 10 years ago, wow it’s changed and not in a good way, food is not tasty anymore, there is rubbish absolutely everywhere and people are just demanding massaged and taxis everywhere, it’s definitely lost to tourism now, I will not be returning, what a shit hole
That's sad 😢 Us expat want to find in Bali what they have in western country. Our lifestyle is a misery on locals. Where locals from Cangu live now when all expats has taken the area. Mass tourism... Also I'm not sire russians and Ukrainians are the only reason for the price rise in Bali. Let's talk about all the "entrepreneurs" so called millionaires etc. Bali is full of fake life, spiritual and business coaches.
I moved to bali in 2021 and canggu was completely empty with no one on the road when you go to a restaurant for lunch, now days I completely avoid canggu bc of it's insane traffic jam's! I moved to Pererrnan as its also in development right now but still not as bad as canggu.
I first visited Bali in 1984....😅😅😅....traffic?...horses and bemos(google bemo)...Seminyak was paddy fields and Canggu was, well, nothing. Things change.
This is extreme. I'm literally in Bali right now living in a two bedroom place with kitchen and Aircon (bills included) near Ubud for $20 a night and eating (out or in, it is the same price) for $7.50 a day. Yes you can pay more.....but the same is true anywhere on Earth. A lovely meal out in an international food restaurant a few days ago cost me $15 for that one meal. It's is all about choice and Bali still has options for all budgets.
Bali is expensive now..bali for !17 YEARS NOW. And it's more expensive than ever now.. Make my own food now. And I don't buy import food only Indonesian. I live there for free thoo, own my own land😎😎 changu is for kids. I'm 40 so I live in ubud and kintamani.
I think if people choose the right time to travel to Bali before the summer peak it will seriously give them a better attitude to Bali’s because like April & May or September & October
Nope. It is a mess. Just left last week. Matt was super soft in this video, culture is getting crushed, biz people can't hire locals easily because of demand. Don't get fooled.
Ok, so I lived in Bali for 16 years, since age 18... You are viewing Bali through the classic Bali bubble syndrome. Bali is painted in a very nice picture here. The evil corruption and what not, does not make this the pretty picture you have painted in this video. Anything for views right? It's a shame because I actually enjoyed your channel before.
Also, it's so funny how you are complaining about Bali changing... Yet you are literally posting about your massive villa in the middle of a rice field, hosting noise polluting parties. Omg so much hypocrisy in this video.
Not only expensive, it become generic with building mall everywhere!! Bali feels like jakarta!! Not to mention traffic jam everywhere….. big NO to live there
I'm here right now and was talking to my friends about all the points you made in this video. It's so much more expensive than I remember. The traffic is insane. And it feels like there are more foreigners than locals. But I do disagree with the airport arrival. Immigration was crazy and I stood in line for 1.5 hours.
Bro...I lived in Bali for 18 months back in 1996. Seminyak used to be ground zero for expats, Canngu was just a tiny village back then with endless fields of rice paddies that i'd pass by on my way to surf out there. Listening to this video and seeing the bits....I feel so lucky to have lived and experienced it back in the day. I still have some friends that live there, they told me it has been spoiled long before COVID hit - paradise lost!
$1,200 a month for food in Bali? I spend 1/2 of that in the US and I live in an expensive area. Forget about it! Another Tourist Trap! If it weren't the Gen Z's pump on youtube and tiktok, everything would still be1/2 the price.
This is kinda tru. But Christian isn’t the blame . Shit just happens and I can guarantee that no one wanted prices to go up that much. But it happens . And it sucks .
There is a lot to unravel about this video. At one hand it is good that he is addressing the situation, but on the other hand. People like him are also contributing to the situation... Don't get me wrong, I love travelling, and most likely Christian is a wonderful person. But seeing this... And reading the other comments made me want to chime in the conversation. Most of us are tired of the rat-race back home. Western life makes no sense... Houses are unaffordable and the stories all the baby-boomers told us when we were young that with hard work you can do anything are just blatantly a lie. A lot of people have to work two jobs just to make a living. That made a lot of millennials and younger started to look for other things. Being entrepreneurial. Home, and into other countries, facets, and areas. Than there are also the people who live on old money and just do what they please. The thing is, because most of the time, enough is not enough and there is no sustainability in any of the things that are being done. It becomes a snowball effect and just another form of locust mass tourism. Eating everything up and when it is all chewed down and destroyed it is not fun anymore and talk about "the good old days" while they are not even from there. Also there is a big part of arrogance at play originating from saviour syndrome that "we" can fix the world and our business is helping the locals. That immediately becomes obsolete when consumerism and flex culture comes into play. And everything just benefits yourself. Also most people are not so deep as they think they are just because they read a novel, now living on Bali and having the same lifestyle in Amsterdam-West chugging Ayahuasca like it is Raki and feeling healed because they pooped their pants and vomited twice. That is easily an area that jumps into cultural appropriation on multiple levels, spanning different continents. I've read in the comments about Portugal and so many other places where this is happening. Not just by rich Westerners, but also local sharks, or eastern sharks who buy up 18 apartments to turn it into an Airbnbs so with the end result that the real locals don't have a place to go to anymore. Airbnb as a concept is great since hotels are the loneliest places on earth. So is all the other stuff. Being a Digital Nomad. Being a traveller. An entrepreneur. All of the above is amazing. I am all for making bank, chasing your own happiness, and getting most out of life. Everyone deserves to be happy. But "we" do need to get of our high horse and think, is this the right way to do it? On the other hand... Maybe I am just becoming a grumpy old fart... Who knows... :)
If you wanna looking for Bali alternatives, there is only three options. 1. Live in big cities like Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, etc. 2. Live in Indonesia's outskirts like North Sulawesi, Ambon, or ... Papua maybe? 😬 3. Live in the city with majority muslims in there. It means, NO pork, NO alcohol, NO bikini, and so on.
Lol bro, you can't complain about the increased cost in Bali when you literally promote it 24/7 with videos like this and are going to places that are more expensive. Therefore bringing more traffic to the island You also can't complain about it when you literally built a content creator house over there which brings even more traffic over there and a high spenders. You're literally creating the conditions that you are complaining about
Hard to believe the rapid change growth there. Our popular spots for foreigners here in the Philippines now far behind which is known for remote work digital nomads several years ago. at least, no excessive traffic and price increase. Well deserved by Indonesia though, they grew and improved just everywhere. They're a huge economy for several years now
