Hey David. I know you posted this a year ago, but I hope you still may see my question. This may be a stupid question, but here it is anyway. I am not too far from you - in Anderson, South Carolina (the upstate) . Lake Hartwell is obviously our biggest lake around, but there are plenty of others too. If you are living on a freshwater houseboat, how do you deal with the changing lake levels? Hartwell for instance can change dramatically due to drought conditions. Over my 53 years of life I have seen years when entire coves are dry. Even the other lakes in the area that are not controlled by the Corps of Engineers lower the lake levels in the winter months for people to work on their docks, etc. What would I do then? Good afternoon. Lake Norman's level doesn't vary much. Duke Power controls the level in the chain of lakes. Duke consider's 100 to be full pond. In the winter they typically drop the level to 94-95 and in the summer it usually rises to around 97-98. Back in 2007 it got down in the 93's which I believe is the lowest on record. I am at the end of the dock, 800' walk each way, and currently have 17' of water under my hull. I won't be in the mud unless the lake gets down to 80'. Our slip rest with utilities is $5100 a year.The marina does have free wifi but it is not the best. I pay for Spectrum cable internet at the slip. I also pay for DISH satellite service for service in the slip and out on the water, On most weekends, year around, we pull out of the slip on Friday afternoon and return Sunday afternoon, When the temps get above 80 we run the generator so we can keep the AC on and the temps inside at 73. The generate burns 1.05 GPH. This weekend we ran to 26 hours which at the current fuel price of $6.15 gallon it cost us $160 for AC. That is doable last years costs. This season's fuel bill will be high.

Thanks so much for your response. I didn't know that Lake Norman's levels do not vary much. I love that lake. My uncle had an incredible property on that lake right across from Governor's Island. He actually bought an entire peninsula - probably in the 1950s or so when it was dirt cheap. Your information is most helpful. Thanks again.

internet at the marina is about $360 for 6 months. not cheap considering the speed isn't great.

if you can, we say GO FOR IT! the LUV tub doesn't have working engines, so we just stayed in the marina

@@WIFEWIFELIFE Since this is a houseboat and not a speedboat, you could consider a few good sized trolling motors. Won't break any speed records but it will move you and at a fraction of the cost of repairing/replacing your engines.

This is a good question! I hope they answer it at some point.

At our marina, electricity is not included in slip fee but water and internet connection is included. We do not pay a parking fee nor do we have to pull our boat out in the winter. We have a stack washer and dryer on board so we obviously do not pay coin op laundry.

Do you have any ideal about the waterways in America? You go from Lake Erie to Mississippi & all way to New Orleans or turn around& end in Canada. You ladies need put some nautical miles on that boat. Problem is there it’s seasonal. Leave in the winter & back in the spring! 😊

Im ALL about the RV lifestyle, one because for the first five years i paid NO rental fees at ALL, NONE:) No issues at all, infact, everyone wanted tours:) Just when i thought the RV experience was super i watched the Luv Tub :) I just dont like those mandatory sleep fees, although, here in the USA the mooring fees are only 70.00 per month which is ok to me. Something about the water, traveling to exotic places down and under etc..........Then when i think about costs long term, the RV just seems more practical and you can literally visit most locations.

My husband and I are actually thinking about getting an RV to live in full time! I would love a houseboat, but I don't think we'll be able to find one in our price range 😞 ( if money were not an issue, houseboat would win!!! ) So we may soon be fellow RV'ers, lol!

It's only a bad idea if your partner isn't trust worthy or isn't very good with money. But for them, it's probably the best option. People just need to be honest with themselves about their partner. They need to ask what their strengths are, as well as their weaknesses. They also need to ask themselves if their partner would ever do anything malicious if they were to break up for any reason..
