I just replaced 40' of collapsed PVC sewer line (they'd used sub-grade, thin walled junk) in the front yard of a rental house. It only ran to a max of about 3' deep, but estimates from plumbing companies ranged from $3,800 to over $10,000. I rented a small excavator for $220, bought the pipe, fittings, primer and cement for about another $110, and did the job with my wife's help in about 8 hours. I'd never used an excavator before, but it was very simple to use, and it was actually a blast. I'm 62, and I finally realized what I was training for with those Tonka toys, back in the '60s! lol. Plumbers sure are awfully proud of digging a trench with a machine and gluing a little pipe together!

You are paying for the insurance. If you crack the city sewer you can be in alot of trouble. Or heaven forbid you hit a gas or electric line you could pass away. But yeah it's not hard, dig, remove or place next to old sewer, slope 2 percent, proper fittings and connect using a Y. Put a clean out. But alot can go wrong. And insurance is expensive, that's why it's so much

I don’t like any method other then the tried and true traditional pipe replacement method. Dig a graded , bedded compacted de rooted trench and replace with a full size new sewer pipe, with a guaranteed slope and pipe diameter. No lawn or surface concrete is worth not being able to use the restroom or not have a guaranteed pipe diameter and slope with properly made connections. I disagree with the new trench less or blown epoxy liners unless it’s absolutely needed. In which case I would still advise a traditional pipe replacement or not the do the job at all. Just my two cents twins

How about a price update for 2021? This video is good, but posted in 2013. Got any updated estimates?

Just got mine replaced for $13,750. The company had to dig 8 feet down and run 75 feet. When the were digging they found my water line that was made of galvanized iron. Said it is cheaper to replace now than later. Also said it was probly 60% or more clogged. When they pulled the line it was almost 80% plugged. All toll the cost was $17, 250, OUCH! It was worth it not to have black sludge coming into my home and cleaner water coming into my whole house water filter.

The Twin Home Experts , What thor missed is that on a DIY many things could go sideways. There are cave ins, super dumb venting mistakes and improper fittings. The best sewer plumbing is as good as the smallest mistake or weakness. I ser this all the time as a framer. Sure some older homes have extremely simple sewer, but its hard work no doubt about it!

This is the situation… my brother stripped everything out of the bathroom himself. He says the sewage line needs replacing, the water line from the street to the house need replacing,, and the water heater needs to be replaced. He wants to put a shower where the bathtub used to be. In two weeks I have 2 plumbing companies that will bid on the jobs. One company will break the job into 3 parts. One is the Sewage and Waterlines, one will be repiping and water heater, and then installing shower, hookups on toilet and vanity. The house itself is hardly worth anything, the land is more valuable. I basically want him to have a working bathroom. Do you think all the pipes will need replacing? What would be your rough estimates of the entire job? TYVM!

Oh that was a helpful critique. I like how you opted for brevity by omitting altogether whether the estimates were generally too high or too low, to say nothing of providing any supporting rationale.
@DennysD123
@DennysD123 3 года назад
@@boxsterman77 I thought the comment was fine. Redoing a sewage line is expensive work. And the range of costs can range from 3 grand (an easy fix or back up issue close to the source, with little to no destruction), to 20,000 grand, having to destroy bathrooms, floors, drive ways, etc. from top to bottom. Not so easy. Those other methods, other than actually running new pipes, are band aids.

Hello love your channel. My question is: Regardless of which method you choose (traditional) vs. trenchless, do you need a city permit ? The plumbs who gave estimates say this is only needed if rerouting is done. I live in San Diego. Thx
@TwinHomeExperts
@TwinHomeExperts 4 года назад
The plumbers who are telling you this is completely incorrect. You need a permit regardless of any method or repair.
@satisfyingbuzz332
@satisfyingbuzz332 3 года назад
@@TwinHomeExperts you only need an encroachment permit if you do work in the city's right of way, may also be shared with your property. You will also need a permit if you touch the city's main. If you are doing repairs on your own property then you don't need one. I use to work issuing encroachment permits and also live in San Diego.

how deep does the sewer line need to be in the ground, that runs from your home to the street?
@glennmiller6183
@glennmiller6183 6 лет назад
No real depth standard. But the line has to be no less than 1/4 inch pitch per foot and no more than 3 inch pitch per foot. Theory is too little and water/solids won't move, and too much and onlt the water moves, leaving solids behind

@Vassild

What about when the sewer line goes into a road and they have to stop traffic any estimates on that ?
@dennis1201
@dennis1201 6 лет назад
Thats on the company performing the repair. They shouldn't add additional cost for stopping a little bit of traffic. But then again I guess it is possible if they considerate it like a "hazard charge". Does your entire sewer line need to be replaced? Or is it just certain sections of the pipe?
@bryan5580

Check with your city engineer first. I found out where I live that if it's under the street or sidewalk, then it's the city's responsibility and cost me nothing.
