As seen on Craigslist: "Harbor Freight wire welder, like new. Selling for $300. Needs power cord. Stinger is missing. Needs control board. Paint peeling. Wire feeder needs replacing. Few small dents and dings. Catches on fire. This welder sells new for over $340."

The only thing wrong with your example is that they aren't asking $400

Great intro video. Yes, that $3.50 welding cap is totally worth it. I didn't have one at first and learned my lesson when a few sparks landed on the top of my head.

That's a good inexpensive setup. Love my $3 Lincoln beanie. Time to lay some beads.🙂 Hopefully you won't experience what i did and outgrow it to quickly. I should have just spent the extra money and bought a higher capacity welder to begin with. My first welder was a Campbell Hausfeld 70A stick. It was dirt cheap and was less than desirable. Next was a new Hobart 140A handler. Easily handled 3/16 and 1/4 if it was pre heated and was very durable. I now have a Hobart MVP 210 and really like it. It gives me that extra punch for 3/8 and is still portable ( well somewhat it's heavy at 100# including a 10# roll of wire) and welds fantastic. Hobart's are good quality and have a great warranty.

I bought this same welder for around same price. I was sketch at first but it made me $2500 on my first job i did. Held up really good especially with the gas. I do automotive rust repair and so its definitely not 1/4 inch welding but im sure with flux and a few passes, it can be done. For the price you can't go wrong and YES use the coupon 👍👍💪💪

Once you get setup with gas it's surprisingly cheap and you'll curse yourself for not switching sooner. I only pay about $30 for a 80 size C25 tank swap, which lasts quite a while. Northern Tool routinely has Hobart ER70S-6 wire on sale for almost the same price as the HF Vulcan, though to be honest, I actually don't notice that much difference between the two brands (admittedly I'm not a trade welder or anything).

4-1/2 in. Steel Knotted Wire Wheel from HF lasts a lot longer than the crimped wire cup brush and won't throw the wires into you nearly as badly.

I had to pretty much start from scratch , I picked up a new miller 211 . After just about buying everything I needed including a cart I spent about $2,200

I made the mistake of buying a 120 volt welder thinking it would handle everything I need. I ended up purchasing a 240 volt welder almost a year later because I soon found out that I was limited on what I could do with the 120 volt one. For the fist time purchaser I would highly recommend saving up and purchasing a dual voltage (120/240 v) welder.

I've got a Hobart Handler 140 too...had it about 15 years now. Started on flux before going to gas, has been super reliable. Would like to try a spool gun setup and do some aluminum with it one day.

@@fml5910 Very user friendly due to its simplicity, but still good build quality being a Miller product. The 140 is about as simple as it gets when it comes to making adjustments.

Can you make a video on how correctly use the welder with different settings in it? As well with the gas. Love the videos, great job!

I heard the 170 amp Chicago Electric mig/flux core welder is a decent entry level machine. Its only 170 dollars with a coupon and you always have the option of running gas if you choose. The only potential issue is that it only runs on 240v, which not everyone has access to.

I like the Eastwood welding helmets, and you should also have a gas mask, flux core can get very smoky. And even with gas welding you shouldn't be breathing the fumes.

I would think you would need a steel welding table to weld small items on along with a welding cart for all the equipment you purchased.

Any thoughts on doing the same thing with a stick welder? I hear that's the man's man way of going about welding.

Is that $100-250 for the bottle, or the bottle filled with gas? How much is it to refill gas typically? Can a flux welder join thin stock? Several years ago I did a little bit of tig welding at a makerspace that shut down. I liked tig and could do it decent enough for my needs - but the jump from flux to gas really worries me with cost and complexity if I'm buying, storing, and doing setup of all this stuff on my own versus in a shop with help and endless space

Why did you go for a flux core wire welder over a stick welder?
@ToolTeardowns
@ToolTeardowns 4 года назад
Because I bought this to do bodywork on a project car.
@zumbazumba1
@zumbazumba1 4 года назад
Easier to use ,works better for sheet metal -BUT serious flux core welders can go up to 10mm steel plates and make a good penetration.Can a cheapo do that ? Probably not ,but for basic work of how to build a fence it will do fine . Stick welding is a worst process to master ,you have 3 axis of movement to master ,its hard especialy for pipe welding.If you can master that all other types will be easy.

People over charge for used welders its insane
@AERuffy
@AERuffy 4 года назад
Companies do too all because it's considered a "specialty" item. The components in a high end welder don't warrant the multi thousand dollar price tags. That said people are insane in the used market. No I will not spend $100 on a 20 year old busted harbor freight low end welder that was $99 on sale.

A lot of the time the welder was really expensive when new and the seller just doesn't know what has happened in the market. 40 years ago a Mig was not something you found in most home shops. Stick welders and gas were what was common. Today gas welders has become a specialty item and stick welders a last resort, with MIG and even TIG being the preferred technology. A cheap modern stick / MIG combo welder isn't out of reach for most people and it is often hard to fathom how much cheaper equipment like this has become. So people tend to over estimate what the big and heavy 20 year old welder that cost a ton of money is actually worth now.

@@AntonioClaudioMichael Dont forget a sentimental added value -maybe he bought it with first paycheck. "It has been working for 20 years its gonna last 50 more . . ." But grandpa its 100 pounds heavy and does everything worse than a modern machine that weights 20! "God damn those modern machines wont last another 50 years !" I got a family friend with that mentality,he tried some cheap shit inverter welder that kept shutting down every 2 min and he thinks they are all crap. People live in the past,my neighbour thinks his drill press and a small lathe ,old welder ,some taps and wrenches are worthy 50.000€ When in reality its not worthy even 10 in current economy.But hey he made a lot of money back in the day with it ,right after meteor wiped the dinosaurs so it must be worthy same price today. Added sentimental value tax -thats what it is .

Absolutely you need to buy 1 more thing. You need to buy my old rusty Jeep so you have something to weld and you need to buy it before I have to go out and get all that junk and try to learn how to weld.
