Cruising costs as much as you have or as little as you want to spend. All depends on the lifestyle you want to live. I cruised my 33ft, steel, pilothouse cutter ($40k) singlehanded for 7 years including a 40,000 mile circumnavigation on an average of $10,000./year. Went south of the capes (cape horn and cape of good hope) so I didn't have any transit fees. No sat phone and pay as you go cell phone. Did all my own maintenance, used my bicycle for most all transportation, spent only 4 days tied to a dock and did 2 haul-outs/refits. Sold my boat for what I paid for it after I moved ashore. I admit, I lived very modestly based on my philosophy of minimizing my footprint on the planet. Go small and go now! It is an awesome lifestyle!

You guys have the right idea. I speak as a 50 year veteran as a small craft professional mariner, two round trips to French Polynesia from the west coast of North America and South America. Rule of thumb for you dreamers: get the smallest boat you think you can be comfortable (Relative term!) on; keep the equipment to the minimum necessary because it will all go to shit one day; expect to be uncomfortable at times; no matter how well you plan, there will be surprises; you are not guaranteed to wake up tomorrow. Be bold and go.

So basically it's a lot like living on land. If you cook at home and fix things yourself it's not that expensive. I notice a lot of sailing videos are of cruisers eating out, partying and getting drunk. That's why I like your videos, it's about experiencing the world up close. Thanks for the background and info.

Well Matt & Amy, We knew the old adage of a boat and it's yearly costs being very high, but this chapter was most enlightening. Sailing 'close to a budget' gives us the bluntest eye-opener. You two are a great example to just how it CAN be managed. Well done. Vernon & Joanne, Arizona, USA.
@vidaliasoleil2714

I was reluctant for many years to buy a boat because of the cost of keeping a boat. I heard so many people talk about how expensive owning a boat was: "a boat buck" was $1000, a boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money". We sailed our first boat around the Great Lakes on a very low budget. Doing a lot of the maintenance and repair work yourself is a huge savings. We now have an ocean cruising boat $35000 and anticipate $20000 in upgrades. We have sufficient financial reserves to cover unexpected maintenance or replacement of the things we are not repairing or replacing. One of our big fears was health insurance while in the US, which is quite expensive, but we found decent health insurance for outside the US that will cost the two of us $800 a year. Everything tastes better on a boat so food costs can be low.

@@Pyndle $17k is super frugal for a couple sailing. However it all depends on where you go, mode of transport, speed you travel at and the activities/luxuries you use along the way. Used to be able to travel slowly in India and Nepal for total budget $10 to $15 per day about 12 years ago. Guessing $20 to $25 is do-able today in India/Nepal. I reckon once all set up cycle touring and stealth wild camping a lot of the time could prob average no more than $30 to $40 per day in most countries. Since getting married rent and local property tax alone is about $16,800, that's before gas/electric food, car, clothes etc.

Reading some comments here, most are saying they thought it would cost more. For some reason i thought it would be less. Especially being so frugal. I guess i was thinking with No Rent, Electric/gas, Car Payment/ Registration, Water, Waste Removal, Property Taxes, no monthly Cable TV, and monthly Phone Bill it would be closer to a grand a month. Living as frugal as you do that is. Thank you so much for sharing this info, this was very informative.

joe bosco I’ve been researching this topic for a while and thought it spot on. There are those that spend less but usually on 30’ or less with less systems, etc. Just the cost of bottom paint almost doubles with each time you add 5 ft in LOA. Same for moorage, lines, etc.

Had a great idea, I love sailing, and I have always wanted to sail the world. But as with most people in my generation, I could never leave the internet luxuries that I afford today. However, now with Starlink becoming a possibility, the idea of being able to sail around the world in 5 years with full high-speed internet anywhere in the world or ocean at a low cost is game-changing. Internet would make spending a few weeks crossing the Atlantic so much more bearable. Imagine this: Crossing the Atlantic watching the sunrise with Netflix on a TV just off to the side of your view behind the wheel. I suppose I would just need some powerful solar panels or a generator battery supplement.

Also considering their source is possibly largely from us, the general public, i'd think that to reveal such a number would lead alot of people to think "oh they're making enough money, they don't need my contribution" not realizing that patrons, and donations are as fickle as the weather, and not an absolute guarantee month to month.

Thank you both for being so open and sharing your expenses. As someone who is dreaming of exploring the world on a sailboat, it is a relief to hear that I don't need millions to live the dream. Keep up the great work, your channel is fantastic!

Wow these guys are serious penny pinchers. Rowing instead of using the outboard?!

It makes more sense than using the outboard and then paying to row a machine in the gym! ;-)

I really appreciate your honest and candid perspective of the costs of sailing. All the other videos can be a little out of touch with the general public. Most of us that want to do this aren’t rich. This definitely gives me a better idea for planning. Great video. Safe travels!!
