How do you like to exercise your dog?

I prefer taking my GSP to the Woods. There she get's to run and use her nose and can explore as she likes. Lucky enough I life in the city center, wich means there are a lot of other dogs for her to play with and a lot of parks near us where we can do Dummytraining. Since her recall is almost perfect I can let her run around without a leash almost on any Grünfläche. She is also trained to ignore all the picnicking and ball games playing people. We also have a big river in our city and many riversides to choose from for long walks. All that can be easily reached either by foot or using public transportation.

First time GSP owner here! This is a great video, very informative to people that are strangers to GSPs and might consider getting one :) My girl is 1 and a half, and I was definitely NOT prepared for such energy!! I wanted an active dog for sure, but I am amazed of what she can do and I wouldn't change it for the world. I am in better shape thanks to her and I love going out in the wild with her... But it sure is a commitment. Do you have tips for recall? I am struggling with recall for so long and I feel like I have tried everything (tasty treats, long line for weeks, exercises at home,...) 😄 Her instinct is sharp, but that means she sometimes just running after a scent and just ignores me until she decides otherwise... thanks!

Welcome! I completely understand! Because GSP's are highly prey-driven, there is always worry about your dog going after an animal (deer, bunny, squirrel etc) and they just stop listening. In my opinion, after owning two GSPs that we love to take off leash, it is a good idea to PROPERLY train them on an e-collar. It does take time and they need to be properly conditioned for it but it is SO worth it! Try checking out Shield K9 online or in person courses. Very important that you don't rush through the steps just to get to the off leash part. For a GSP, no treat will override a deer or bunny! lol GSP's tend to be very sensitive yet strong. We use the mini educator e-collar because it has very small increments of intensity.

My girl is a pointer mix rescue, and she definitely has the energy! I admittedly do get frustrated sometimes when she gets worked up or destructive, but I also know it means I’m not doing enough to meet her exercise needs, so videos like this are helpful to give me a better sense of what she needs to thrive!

Thank you for rescuing her! Yeah, pointers need to be scheduled into your calendar every day at least twice a day for everyone’s sanity! Lol. You can get away with skipping a day only if they’ve had a ton of exercise the day before. They also need mental work so perhaps one of those sniff games you can get from Amazon might be a good idea. I just bought one. Hasn’t arrived yet.

I can't tell you how much I needed this video today. Thank you thank you! GSP owner here (1.5yo) and I struggle with balancing her needs with my own. I found you through your dog bicycling videos. Very happy to have found your channel. 💙

Hey! Awesome! I’m so glad you found it helpful! It is very difficult to balance the needs for both. I bike through the winter as well. I just put my studded tires on today! Let me know if you have specific questions. 😊

Great video! You nailed it! My four year old does all my marathon training with me. And with marathons being virtual due to Covid, he actually ran the marathon with me (with thanks to the support crew who kept us both properly fueled and hydrated!).

This is the most accurate description of GSP's I've heard. Our old GSP lived to 15, and even on days when I had to lift him up out of bed in the morning, he managed to walk nonstop almost all day until he went to bed at night. Our new guy seems to be less active but still needs about 1/2 an hour of running/walking at least 2 -3 times a day.

Hello! My partner and I just adopted an 11 year old German Wirehaired Pointer from the shelter! I would love to ask your advice! He has some arthritis but has so much energy and loves to play ball off leash. Even though running isn’t the best for his arthritis we don’t want to sacrifice his quality of life when he wants to play. We take him out for around 1-2 hours total a day to do some kind of physical activity with him. I never want to overdo it though and I always listen to him when he shows signs that he’s done playing. What are your thoughts?

Awe, lucky GWP to have such caring parents. Have you thought of swimming? My previous GSP love swimming right up to age 15. Very nice on the joints. If we didn’t have time for swimming (fetch in the water) then we would do a short run/walk of about 1-2 miles…whatever he felt like. I’d let him decide when to run and when to walk.

Excellent video from an obviously knowledgeable lady with a passion for GSPs. I haven't got 'Atticus' yet, but he is on my to-do list. My wife and I need to relocate to Ticino in Switzerland first and I can't wait to go mountain walking with him - 'tis a dream I have.' William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream. Act IV, :)

Very good informative video about GSPs. These dogs aren't lazy couch potatoes and people need to understand that before choosing one. It's a daily effort you have to be ready for.

Thank you! Yes it is a daily task to plan the GSP exercise into your day! Planning ahead for weather considerations as well. Just a walk isn’t going to cut it. Lol.

@@JenniferWasylenko haha nope, little walk on a leash ain't gonna do it. More people need to know this and make the right decision. I however am a restless person so GSPs are a perfect match for me. And I truly believe all the activity that GSPs require is good for me also.

Hi Lucy! Oh gosh, they all do. They are like velcro. He will eventually get better and not whining SO much when you leave but that won't happen until he is about 5 or 6 years old maybe. They do NOT like to be left alone for hours and are very clingy. lol. He loves you very much!

They are whiners. Go do something with him/her. Park, swimming, training, throwing balls or dummies, frisbee works great.
