Thanks everyone for all the great questions! An additional note from Dr. Barnard regarding the question on iodine: "Iodine plays roles in the body aside from its functions for the thyroid. So you’ll still want to include healthy iodine sources in your diet.”

I just want to say, Thank you Chuck for all you do on this channel!! I appreciate it. I really love when Dr Barnard is on. He has given such tremendous insight to the whole food plant base diet. He sounds genuine when he speaks to us and is not at all condescending. Makes you feel like he truly understands how some of us feel about our food addictions, and that we can work through it. I pray for strength to get through this transition to plant base foods and find the pure healthy route!!!

DJ...I agree 100%...love the way Doc B explains things...you are spot on! Rather than 'pray' for strength...EAT for strength, that is plant based all the way...once you are past 30 days you will begin to feel so different you'll never want anything else!...Just think of what you are doing for yourself and take pride and glory in your life accomplishments!...this is a forever life style and after a while you won't even think about it, you'll just do it. Keep your house 'clean' of junk food and you'll be better off...if it's in your house, it's in your mouth...rock on vegan compadre!...x

Love when you interview Dr. Barnard, he is awesome! Great information! I have a question, for the future, is it safe to consume no nuts or seeds? Or are these foods essential to being healthy? Will not eating enough fat in your diet cause you to overeat other foods as your body is craving the fat? If you exercise frequently do you need more fat?
@windre
@windre Год назад
all the epidemilogical studies say those who eat nuts live longer even when controlling for other factors. things like flaxseed have cancer fighting lignans and walnuts are associated with increased critical thinking and endothelial function. because of lipid bioavailability, the fats in nuts and seeds are processed differently in our body compared to things like oil and animal products. this applies to all nuts except peanuts. nut butters dont seem to be associated with longevity either. its to the point where Dr. Dean Ornish has introduced nuts and seeds to his program, and Dr. Essylsten even reccommends a tablespoon a day of ground flax. Dr. Michael Greger has dug into a lot of the literature surrounding nuts, and Joel Furhman has a good compilation of the epidemilogical associations. Still, reccommendations seem to be to eat a handful or less a day, despite evidence that nuts dont effect weight.

If I know that there’s a bag of them in the house, I will end up eating the whole bag, fighting off anyone who stands between. There’s no moderation in my situation when it comes to Oreos.

I have Crohn's, I tried an elimination diet,. Only eating potato, pea, green beans, sweet potato, for a month and felt much better. As I added more foods in I found nuts and seeds and cooking oil increased inflammation. Olives and avacado also caused inflammation. Cutting salt actually made a huge difference. I limit fruit and avoid dried fruit. I find I eat as much greens as I can and huge variety of veg and beans. I also have wheat and soy allergy so cut those. I suggest really cutting out everything for a month elimination diet then gradually add in more food and see how you feel. I think a big part is feeding the good bacteria what they need, I don't think they like salt and fat. And be on the look out for which proteins cause autoimmune reactions. For what to eat I found chef AJ has some good ideas. As for my Crohn's my inflammation levels are normal without medication and I feel my body is healing.

Than I got all well and all symptoms disappeared. 3 years now. Follow HighCarb Health. Also, sleep well and mange your stress levels. Make sure to eat 100/: clean. Don’t eat outside food. See what are you allergic too. I found corn starch and popcorn doesn’t work for me. Please stay away from fake vegan food. Also,intermittent fasting helps a lot. Another thing is sometimes it’s better to cook your veggies if your body is not use to eating raw.

I hope Dr. Barnard will address this question someday: I’m on the line between normal and low blood pressure. You sometimes mention that eating a certain food will lower your blood pressure. Is this only true for people with high blood pressure, or will eating a beneficial food further lower the blood pressure of someone with low blood pressure? Also, is a person who’s pushing 70 but with no health issues except osteoarthritis and normal-low blood pressure, free to salt things to levels similar commercial foods or might that be harmful?

I avoided eating most fruit for years because I believe that sort of nonsense. My mom was diabetic and she was told something similar. The polyphenols and fiber in fruit means that the sugars don't affect blood sugar the same as candy or soda pop. Also, most of the sugar is fructose, which is metabolized very differently in the body as compared to glucose.

But I used to do my brother's chores in exchange for his fruit! And then came the day I went on vacation with my best friend's family. We were all herded into the backseat of a brand new VW camper,🚙 and told we had to sit criss cross applesauce the entire two and a half hour drive to the Cape! Why? Because on the floor of the back seat were five big brown paper bags, one filled with cherries, one with strawberries one with blueberries and blackberries a d the the last two with peaches and plums. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Of course this was to last 6 kids two weeks, but still.. damn!🍎🍐🍒🍇🍒🥝🍓🍇🍐🍑

@@Frenchblue8 ; I have a feeling that your parents, like mine, probably thought that fruit was too expensive - except maybe when it was on sale, or "day old" bananas, which are the ones my mom used to get because they were a lot cheaper. Or, maybe your parents thought that fruits were "too sugary"? Thankfully, my brother and I usually weren't limited to a certain number of fruits each week, or even each day. Mom just didn't want us eating anything within one hour before a meal, and generally told us to avoid eating "too many snacks" between meals. She didn't mind if we ate out of the fruit bowl frequently because she didn't want the fruit to just sit there, and go bad. That would've been a horrible waste of food & money, and effort (especially effort, in the case of the strawberries she grew in the back yard, and the peaches, apples, and apricots that she picked & bought from local orchards). She wanted us to help eat those right away, unless she was saving them for a pie, or jello, or preserves. If she was saving them for projects like those, she would always let us know.

Avocados don't spike insulin due to their high fat content but fruit high in carbohydrates due. Fat needs to be included in the diet - fat is the cell walls' building material. Also if calorie consumption gets too low, the body goes into a saving mode and the basic metabolic rate slows down.

The question in terms of a cooked vegan diet is not how much, but, how you should eat the fruit, and, that is where one’s knowledge of food combining is highly important. Fruit will create toxic conditions in your body such as fermentation and putrification if the fruit is not combined properly. No fruit combines well with cooked vegan food, period. High density sweet fruit only combines well with sub acid fruit and greens. Any other combination is going to cause trouble in your digestive system. Acid fruit does not combine well with high density sweet fruit. The other factor is how long the cooked food, or, the fruit, takes to get out of your stomach. You need to know this in order to avoid putrification and fermentation. The most fundamental concept related to weight loss and health in general is proper food combining, something that no plant based presenter is addressing. Grains are damaging to the system unless eaten sprouted and raw. The same with beans. Of course they are better than animal product consumption, but, they are not the optimal fuel for the human body. Most people are generally unacceptable of the low fat raw vegan 80/10/10 diet which is the optimal diet for the human species. This cooked vegan diet most plant presenters are pushing is the distant second and is not optimal for energy and heath, but, is certainly far better than an animal based diet. See me on RU-vid at 20 at 70 plant based.

#examroomlive my mom had a gallbladder removed. What does it mean in terms of changes in the functions of her body: liver, digestion, etc. Any particular foods she needs to consume more or avoid (beside animal products and oil)?

I am a very disciplined vegan. I eat the four groups in a continuous way. Sometimes I thought I was eating too much proteins. But I had my blood test done and to my surprise, proteins are low 62 lowered from 64 in 6 months. What can be happening.

Have you ever checked what you eat using an online app like cron-o-meter, so see how high you are on the various amino acids?

Try not adding any cooking oil, nuts, and other high fat foods and limit fruit to 2 pieces per day.

Fruit is the only sugar fructose that is natural fruit sugar is the only sugar that does not require insulin as a carrier. I looked it up. Dr Morse has always said this and so I looked it up to be sure and it is so. And you here everywhere how fruit makes you gain weight have you ever met a person who got fat eating too much fruit

To clear my confusion, ultra-processed carbs (wheat, in the forms of pasta, breads, donuts, cakes, pies, pizzas, etc) and table sugar are not healthy. But complex carbs (whole grains, fruits, veggies) are wfpb healthy and depending on a person’s weight and/or other underlying conditions (diabetes, hi cholesterol), are totally ok? For those not seeking to lose weight, is it ok to drink fruit juices (maybe a normal amt of 400mg or less), 2 to 3 times/week? I’ve also found when I have a bout of diarrhea (usually when eating mushrooms, pistachios, dates) , I have to drink an electrolyte. Also if I drink too much water , I have to add more salt in my diet or else I would feel yucky especially in my throat!

Because of Covid-19 restrictions I have been following the guidelines. My activity is greatly reduced and I am eating nonstop. I have gained a lot of weight this past year. I am vegan but am indulging in vegan junk food. My arthritis is returning. My energy level is low. I am not sleeping well. Depression is closing in on me. I felt wonderful on a WFPB diet for four years. Health issues disappeared. I can’t seem to get back on track. How did you get back to your healthy lifestyle after you blew it?

Aw I wouldn’t say you blew it Rosa. So many people have gone through the same thing this year. I found indoor walking/step workouts on RU-vid helpful when it was hard to get out for a walk. I have been vegan for many years but I have found more recently that regular exercise has really improved my energy and mood.

With all due respect , different doctors have too contradictory opinions about what one should or should not eat... All are respected and and well known doctors which leaves one in a difficult situation as what to really do !

I think it is widely agreed upon that a plant based diet is the healthiest. Whether you want to add some lean meat like chicken breast, fish or turkey to that is something that is more debated, I haven't seen too much convincing evidence that shows that that is bad for you.

Eat as much fruit as you want as long as its non-hybrid and organic fruit with seeds. We are frugivores by nature. I tried all diets known to man. When i only ate fruit, i felt more clear, clean and sharp and happy in my life.

Couldn’t disagree more. Fruit was only available at the height of the year, for a few summer months for our ancestors. Vegetables and nuts were available year round with root veggies making it through the winter, and nuts able to hold for many many months. Fruit in moderation. Vegetables as much as you want. And protein at every meal.

yes, purposeful eating is not easy but it really pays off. If you stop eating SOS (salt, oil and sugar) your taste buds will change but you must avoid all of these for 10 days before that can happen. Stop long enough and you won't miss it and you will see a marked difference in your health...x
