That being said, those steaks are still way overpriced because even real gold leaf not expensive since it has no weight. I do special paint on helmets, fuel tanks,… and use both real and imitations gold leaf. A booklet of imitation gold leaf costs about 15$ and a booklet of real gold leaf around 70$. The smell is also the zinc. It's a super distinctive smell that most welders know from accidentally welding a brass braising rod because they look really similar to silicon bronze welding rod. It's not actually dangerous to breathe in limited quantities (large quantities can cause burn damage to the lungs), unlike lead fumes. Causes flulike symptome 24-48 hours after breathing it in if you aren't breathing more in, tends to hit metalworkers at the end of a weekend. No chronic issues related though, while lead can cause cognitive impairment, speed the onset of dementia, and cause certain cancers. Lead used to be a fairly common filler metal for gold alloys because of its similar density and high malleability, so I'd definitely wear a respirator while melting unknown samples.

This is imitation gold leaf from a Tupperware container provided by a customer with high hopes. Genuine gold leaf is always made from high purity gold of 22kt to 24kt. The package of gold leaf will be marked with the karat value of the gold purity. If the gold leaf provided does not have a designated karat value then it is most likely a brass imitation. When buying gold leaf always be sure the karat value is directly on the package.

Yeah now you know exactly what that salt mook has been feeding people. 1200 dollars for a steak covered in something you shouldn’t eat.

I see a yellowish deposit on the walls of the crucible, which is a sign of zinc. I didn’t notice it at first, but this thing turned out to be brass foil :)))

I think it's important to mention that there are different companies/brands of gold leaf. Not saying it's not a scam but it is possible that not every company that makes this waste of money is lying.

To anyone debating that this makes salt bae's golden steaks overpriced : 1 : this doesn't mean genuine gold leaves don't exist, they're not all made of cheaper alloys. 2 : it was already over priced ? even if it was made from the purest gold on earth, gold leaves are just.... thin asf. At best, all gold crap adds 10$ of value on that steak.

The moment I saw that green-whitish crap on the crucible I knew it was brass... damn I hate that zinc stuff in it. Btw, pretty sure, they knew it as well, because this greenish white layer forms when you overheat brass and zinc in it starts burning...

If YOU buy "Gold Leaf" at your hobby/craft shop, the cheap price should be a clue it's NOT real "Gold." Disclaimer: I don't know what they are selling it for today, but ten years ago I paid about $12 for a package... I also don't know what the actual going rate for a troy ounce of gold in today's market (March 2023). REAL "Gold Leaf," depending on how much gold is going for, for example, ONE small 4 inch x 4 inch sheet will run you about $40-$60, vs. the $15 - $18 for one small package, depending on inflation prices of today... If that "one ounce" package was REAL "Gold Leaf," you'd be paying closer to $1,000 for it!!

You can tell there's a significant amount of zinc by the residue that alone is a good indicator of not gold... Maybe... I don't know what weird shit people might try to dilute gold with. Edit: Looked it up and apparently people do alloy gold and zinc... This saddens me.

It’s called Nordic gold because it’s what Vikings did to trick others into thinking it’s real gold

I believe this metal is called "Nordic Gold." And no, "Nordic Gold" does not actually contain any actual gold.
