Personally, I find talking about money is very helpful. It's good to hear what other people are charging.

So bloody irritating that the building industry is so secretive. I am hoping the younger generation will change it for the better. No more dodgy payment systems, no more secretive pricing. It does not happen in other industries. Building is so unprofessional. I have been in the trade for 25 years and it needs to change

I charge £150 a fire door and £120 a standard. I hang lots of doors too. The building trade is so busy. Can’t believe some carpenters would charge any less. I live in Reading area and other carpenters should never undercut each other so cheap. 3 fire doors in one day, that’s £450. Put your prices up lads and go earn good money, your a trades man. You got all the knowledge and expensive tools with a van. Good luck 🤞

£120 for Oak? Jeez, might have to increase my prices
@kieranperry9685

@@joshy3602 oak is £170 - £200 depending how awkward the frame is and if the frame is old and bowed. I’m hanging 2 in a day, £200 each. Up your prices to £150 each door if it’s private work. Think about it, a decent router and batter is £400, then you got all the other tools. Skill saw is £400 on a batter and this is flexvolt I’m talking bout, plus they are paying for your services and expenses including driving your van to the job 👍🏻

Agree also £120 for standard doors. Tbh been charging same for fire doors but only as most round here don’t require intumescent strips (single oc residential not hmo/commercial), would be £150 with strips. Just got a job 6 oak (veneered) doors £220 each including matching linings, mortice locks and architrave, tbh that was probably too cheap

Don't say sorry to anyone. You are a skilled man. If you feel that's what your worth then that's your price. If someone ain't happy then they can go somewhere else. Some unskilled people may not see the value in having a nice perfectly finished door. done by a pro.

I wouldn’t swing any door for less than £70 but I’m in Southampton. The tools alone required by a carpenter to do the job and experience is worth more than £50 a door which could take an hour depending on the environment by which l mean upstairs, tight bends, cramped conditions and also if the cutting was all done outside. Overall l would say good prices but l think you should up them a little more. Know what your worth.😊

Having watched your videos I feel that I need to start charging per item/job. The bulk of my income and profits come from furniture making as it is selling a product but it sounds like I am missing out on so much by charging extra jobs at a day rate. Thanks for the great video and thanks everyone for the constructive comments.

Can’t argue with them prices. I charge £50 for the standard painted doors too. Oak I charge £70 per door so quite similar to yourself. I hate fitting new doors into old frames tho. Worst job there is. So much mess and effort involved. You have to drill out and chop out for the latches/locks then put all the handles/thumb turns on and then you think you’ve finished then you’ve got to do all the keeps. Just a long process!

Hopefully I don’t bore anyone, but the can ‘scroll past’😂 I haven’t lived in Uk for 21 yrs… but back in the day as an apprentice, we did a lot of doors for council! And they were mainly heavy solid core doors with one glass pane. Me ( 3rd yr maybe? Say 1990) was doing ONE door a day! One 😂….. the tradesman we’re doing ONE door a day! 😂. But you’ll understand why in a minute. Everything was made at least 1/2 an inch to big to even go in the frame! And at least 1/12 inch too high! Zero power tools! Procedure was; humph thing up usually concrete stairs, roughly eye it in to see what you had to do to even get it in the frame! Then several trips up and down getting it to final fit! This was all done with a hand plane! Up to your knees in shavings! And you had to punch all the nails on edge strip when you got down to them. Height was cut with the sandvik 244 or a Jack cut, three hinges in with a chisel, then you had the mortise lock, done with a swing brace and augers, chisel! Then Yale lock… swing brace and the ‘special 1/14 bit’ for it, then the door stops -hand saw ( miter for moulded edge) ‘Winton ‘ weather bar! ( that needed an inch gap itself! Yet they were sending doors BIGGER than frame?!? Then metal/ rubber Draught strips…. Then done I think Usually if you had it swinging by lunch you were on track 😂 near the end I got an electric drill! Which helped with locks when used with a modern auger and rocking motion, made a perfect mortise, quick and no chisel! The boss always wanted 2 doors a day! But the wages for the tradesmen was $154 a Week NO BONUS so he got ONE! True story but hard to believe, thinking at how I’d tackle that job now! With my 36 yrs experience and all my gear! 😂 Last door I fitted was for strata, not sure what it’s called in Uk if it exists? ( a block of flats has all private owners, but no one person owns building, roof doors , windows ..strata owns it) It was a fire door in a metal fire frame ( timber door, metal frame inside door and filled with some special core) Up 3 flights of stairs! Frame was all over the place!! I went there in morning with a cover sheet ( 3 mm mdf) supplier gave me, made a template with that for top bottom left right… popped it on door back at factory, track saw… planer… ✅ Carry it up, mark hinges, laminate trimmed out! Done ✅ Waited for lock smith to fit and rekey locks, and I charged $2400 aud supply and fit, I charged the owner an additional $450 for replacement of locks! Locksmith was about $350 so I got )100 on that I had never done a strata fire door so I rang around for prices and it was between 2-3 k! Which was where my $2500 came from , was going to subby whole job, maybe get $300-400 for nothing, but then priced up door.. $250-$300 and thought ‘there is a bob or two in this! If I don’t mess up!’ Think I made nearly 2 k for driving to get a door, template, fit door with 3 hinges organise locksmith and stick a ‘9’ on door 👍🏻. $2000=£1100 pounds £1100 pounds is 7 and a half WEEKS WAGES for those guys back at the one door a day in 1990! And 14 WEEKS wages for my $80 a week apprentice wage! For fitting a door and 3 hinges 😂 ( btw if your apprentice is interested 1987 first year £29.50 a week second year £50 3rd £80 4 th maybe £120 First tradesmen wage £154! And it was HARD physical work, not like today with our screw guns and planers! Got on a rant sorry😂

So many variables to fitting interior doors, exterior doors are mainly upvc or composite, occasionally steel security, I remember 25 year ago it was £40 for an interior door, nowadays interior doors are completely different, Heavy fancy veneers ball race hinges, bolt through handles and very easy to damage, your risk is way to high at them prices in my opinion, yes you can throw on as many as you like but with speed comes compromise, seen hundreds of poorly fitted doors locks latches and hinges gaps twists upside down wrong way round lock sides mixed up nothing I haven’t seen nothing surprises me, you price low your under pressure to speed fit to make your days money, slip ups can happen, sloppy chisel work and just not having the time to make a nice faultless job which I would say quality comes well before quantity, if the customer is paying peanuts they can get monkeys, I would rather walk away than rush a job cause the money is not what it should be,

As an apprentice myself, when do you recon it’s time for a pay rise ? I’m with my employer 1 year and 3 months.
@Trainboyjackvr
@Trainboyjackvr Год назад
@Well L The truth is not a lot of employers will give an apprentice decent wages but if you can do the same quality of work in the same time period as fully qualified lads then ask for a bit more money…if they say no get some of your own jobs in for weekends or evenings

I'd feel I was mugging people off if I charged more than 35 quid, I do hang 15 doors a day in old frames .. it is hard work in occupied properties but I don't mind working hard been doing it 32 years. Just for reference, the most doors I've hung in one day is 45, no locks just swinging, at the time I used to do alot of schools ,offices, and we got paid 20 quid a door, (so all fire doors)and traditional hung. Locks arcs stops furniture would be separate price..

First and foremost you are a tradesman. You went to college presumably and this is your business. You are not a charity you need to stop looking at your business as if it were a charity. You don't want to get a reputation for being too cheap, because that will be how people will view you.
