Is HGV driving worth it?
What's the hourly rate in HGV driving?
In this video, i show you my actual wage slip from my VERY FIRST Class 1 HGV driving job.
Hope it answers some questions for you!

Unless you have an urge to travel long distance from one distribution centre to another like the thought of sleeping in your lorry, finding somewhere clean enough to feel comfortable showering, like eating rubbished food, then yes spend the money getting your licence but it ain’t cheap and unless you are going be in this industry for a good period of time and your family is going to be able to except this life style you may get lonely out there but so will wife or partner think about it, then save your money you are not going to earn much more than you are at the moment, but you will no doubt be doing more hours that will give you more take home pay but at what cost? Think long and Hard and ask guys that have been in the industry a long time, ask the question would you encourage your son or daughter to be a truck driver !

@the8valveturbo
@the8valveturbo 4 года назад
You beat me too it Sercan!! Deady, the above is how to correctly work out wages, but you did say all these numbers have blown your head pal ha!! So that worked out as £11.33ph. it is shockingly poor, when you consider, & you will grasp this in years to come, the amount its cost you to do class1, the training & the time involved to do class1, the CPC requirements for HGV, AND the responsibility of driving a large goods vehicle when any moment in time, VOSA can come along, fine you wagging their pens for minor or major things. You may think its great, other people in the proffession may think its great if theyre only used to minimum wage. But for me, and me alone, this is my perception, its just not worth it. Ive been driving Class1 since 2002, ive now stopped as of last year after 1 company taking the biscuit, i did 1 day and found out when I got paid, it was £9.31 ph. I was really dissaponted, & upset working for beans after doing a 14hr shift that particular day. So i retraded, drive a FLT. It is less money than class1, but get this! I know when i start, i know when i finish, yes its less hours, but do you know what?!i really enjoy it. I speak to so many drivers, so not in a lonely job anymore, im no longer at risk on the road, or risk of hijacking, vosa, closed roads, blocked roads, low bridges and the like. But what i will say, is there are some fantastic companies out there, & i do have it under my belt to fall upon on. But the really good ones are taken, & sadly, i have to wait my turn. Anyone jumping to class1, do what i did, pass, then find a job shunting. I went this route after passing and shunted 3 years. That will set you up on the road. The amount of times ive been praised for blind siding in bays or yards first time, ive lost count. This comes with expierince, knowing where your headboard is, your axles & when to start straightening. I wish everyone the best of luck in your adventures, & deady, maybe one day ill be loading you as im in the NW too.

This is disappointing, I’m currently furloughed from March- October with more of a take home pay than your basic Deady , I’m waiting on my provisional license coming through as I really fancy my class 2 but jeez , life’s going to be tough by the looks of it. Hgv drivers are getting shafted by the looks of it!
@HamptonSimon
@HamptonSimon 4 года назад
Brian Cunningham it’s swings and roundabouts, for drivers it comes down to the wagon you’re given, the type of work, people in the office and the freedom and variety of work. I did four and half years class 2 tramping UK and EU earning slightly more than what Deady takes home tramping class 1, but i live in Essex and for some reason this work pays better down south. After Covid and work drying up I’m happy now to look for day work on less money as long as the company and vehicle is decent even if I have to work harder physically instead of driving long distance and sleeping out all week. Good luck if you pursue a career change! Hgv driving is what you make it, I personally haven’t ever enjoyed working as much as I have in the last 5 years, getting paid to take in the world, listen to music and sit on my arse all day haha 👍🏻

S H I work for GE so I’m screwed as aviation’s dead for a long time , this has gave me the chance to pursue something I’ve fancied for a long time but never had the bottle to go for it . At 45 i’m thinking I’ll struggle to get driving work as I’m not a young gun anymore 😂. I reckon it’ll be tipper work I’ll try but will just need to take what I can get as someone with no experience! This covids made me realise one thing , I’m no longer wanting to be working in a factory, the change of scenery out on the road appeals !

@Deady2012 4 года назад
That's it mate, you start off by saying it's disappointing, because the money isn't what you would expect maybe? But you can't really put a price on enjoying your job, being on your own with no one to mither you, taking in the world, having the challenge of reversing them things into places that you wouldn't think you'd get it, and above all, sitting on your arse doing very little for a job.....
@briancunningham1975
@briancunningham1975 4 года назад
Deady 2012 very true but I still think it’s a big responsibility behind the wheel of a rig, then there’s the financial investment you put into it to get your license . With this covid there’s a lot more appreciation from the public towards lorry drivers now as they realise just how important you guys are ,if only the bosses seen this and upped the cash ! My sons in the same position in a sense , take home £1600 a month risking his life as a para . Thanks for the honest reply , I’m still going for it 👍🏻

@@briancunningham1975 I've been in the forces, i was on £1200 a month as a Fusilier lol. Mental. There is deffo no more appreciation from the public haha! The public don't give a toss haha! The problem with wages when it comes to HGV drivers are, we are in the middle. We have production on one side & retail on the other, to pay us more, retail costs would go up. In a world now where everyone seems to be on a budget, no one is willing to pay more for a tin of beans. I've done warehousing for 9 years, and now am going for my HGV class 2 licence through my workplace (fully paid for), with practical exam left now, coming up next week. Comparing both, driving seems like daylight robbery, as you said in another video, you get paid for sitting on your bum all day. I did physical work for 12 hours as a warehouse op, and the pay is only 3/4 of what I would get as a driver. You don't have a manager hounding you 10 times a day, whether you will like trucking is really dependant on how you deal with traffic/stupid drivers, as those are pretty much your only day to day concerns/stress checks, apart from, possibly, irregular start times/finishes. It's up to each individual to evaluate, whether this line of work is meant for them, but if you're doing a physically demanding/less paid job or both, like me, you should probably give driving a thought. I'm not diving head first into the industry, like Deady, as im gonna have my class 2 for couple of years, see how it goes and make a decision on class 1 in future, saying that, it's over 2k/month at my place for class 2, so why not lol.

Deady don't let anyone put you or your job down over money it's not all about money. You obviously enjoy your job and that's got to be worth at least £100 a week itself. Would you really take a job that you didn't enjoy for an extra £100 per week or even £200? I certainly would not!

1st full week as a class 1 hgv driver, I can honestly say I've loved it, Not doing it for the money, doing it because I've always wanted to do it. Do what makes you happy, my advice, if you're doing something you don't enjoy, stop doing it, if there's something you've always wanted to do, just do it, life is way too short. Keep up the great work Good win today also Mot

Great vlog as always As much as much as the money is important etc driving a way of life and its the flexibility that driving a truck on your terms gives a person and with agency driving a driver gets to choose what work they want to do and the hours they want to do and driving a truck which the majority of the time issitting on ones posterior holding a steering wheel looking at the countryside with arm out window with tunes on the radio enjoyibg life and 12 and 15 hour days just fly by and are easy to do The way of life and the open road are a bigger draw to to the job and being able to plan your day within a given tineframe to stop wheree you want to eat and when you want to eat etc Ienjoyed my 8 years driving a 7.5t on agency as never had any desire to drive anything bigger etc but as i am abig fan of vanlife etc i tried to live vanlife but work got too flexible which left me without enough to pay my bills etc whilst living vanlife etc ive had the one day a week and 2 days a week and sometimes the no days a week etc but wouldnt have swapped the last 8 years as an agency driver driving a 7.5t truck for anything

Thanks for another great, honest video Deady. I've come from 20 years of working in investment banks in London so I've had to make some pretty big adjustments with the drop in money but so far I can make it work. I'm pretty much on the same page as you, just enjoying the work and I while I see a lot of the more experienced drivers are disillusioned with the industry I have worked across a few industries and I see that in all of them. If you do a job because you have to I think it gets like that, and don't get me wrong, we all have to do that to a degree but I've chosen this route as I have always enjoyed driving and I think that is a major reason I am enjoying the job so much (plus I seem to be working for a great company that transports a wide variety of goods). God knows, I even enjoy the waiting around, I just accept that is what it is about and use the time as best as I can. I never did the Van > Class 2 > Class 1, I was lucky to a Class 1 role straight away so a big learning curve but I expect that going through the whole range makes you a better driver and gives you a better idea of what it is you actually enjoy.

This job lost me my marriage and made me so depressed, 20 mins in the job had me looking at the clock thinking i had at least worked 4 hours, it was soul destroying. 4 on 4 off averages to 42 hours a week, i probably work 65 hours a week now and earn a little bit more, but my god i am in a different enviroment every day, different people, have a coffee when i want, eat or take a break when i want, there are bad times and stressful times but nothing like the bordum i once had, i earn a good wage for my family. Anyway im on holiday this week, me and the wife are going away to say in a £200 a night hotel with roll top bath and sauna in the room....later

those who want to work for nothing are people who don't have the possibility or don't want to change their job. i like to be a truck driver but if they don't pay me right, better find something else to do... who wants to live without a social life? who likes to work more than 12hrs a day? They talk about Brexist... no one says that after April 1st they introduced the IR35 any driver who worked as a self-employer was very unhappy with his new quote. Stop talking about this or that. lost and will lose more driver because the pay is now crap. on the other hand, I am called and treated as a PROFESSIONAL only when DSA/VOSA ask for the documents. Who is delighting with the quote are agencies and companies. They only call other outside companies if they pay well for a short period. TO MAKE A DRIVER'S LICENSE YOU NEED £3,000 TO £4,000 if not more. work with a responsibility and be paid like one who works in a service with less responsibility and less hrs... better to do a job with less hrs same pay and less responsibility. My days as an HGV driver are coming to an end. I hope that changes because it's not just me who thinks that way.
