That debt to income ratio is just painful. So stupid they changed it to a DPT just to pander more money out of students.

School world be much cheaper if you go to community college. It's financially better in short term, but worse in long term. Much less demand in some areas too

Thank you for sharing and being transparent! This is so helpful, both for getting idea of PT salary in another state/location and the breakdown for budgeting - setting aside money for saving and investing. Did you refinance your loans to get the lower interest rate? Or was that the going rate at the time you took out the loans?

Dr. Kang, I recommend reading Total Money Make Over by Dave Ramsey as it teaches you how to get rid of debt, I don’t know your whole situation, but considering it 10 years is a long time. I think you might be able to do it in less time by reading this book. Just a recommendation. Thank you.

hey DR. J KANG , am from middle east , thanks for your fabulous videos , the same for me am dreaming and seeking for getting the NPTE qualification ! NPTE for foreign students that want to be qualified to practice physical therapy is USA , to be honest our doctors and therapist in our university of our department really encouraged me to study hard for that exam ! especially for therapist in USA , it's very good working there because they keep promoting the good therapist ! I hope that your journey would be easy far from obstacles

You can get further by taking on contract positions, and shifting to part-time. I’m an OTR (occupational therapist) with 30+ years experience and it only took me a year of watching PRN and contractors skate in and out of the clinic making more than I was salaried. I resigned soon after my maternity leave. Now I name my hourly rates in contract negotiations, and also see clients through private pay at the same high rates that the corporate clinics bill for. There are a few coaching companies out there training therapists in private pay practice management. You can get those debts paid off much faster, and improve your net worth. Congrats on your accomplishment, you’re one year in by now!

You definitely need to bring that income up by 20-30% by taking some home health or outpatient cases on the side. Then throw all of that money at your debts. You cannot drown in student loans for a decade!

I make between 4200-5k a month after taxes and my health insurance through the company as a PTA doing home health. Physical therapist Assistant in Utah. My school was 45k graduated in 2015.

@Aevykin

Damn bro. 60k per year as DPT is pretty bottom of the barrel. You should seriously consider looking for a new position if that's still what you're making now at the end of 2023. You're getting robbed out of at least 40k a year. BLS lists average PT salary in the US now at like 98k. Switch to HH my dude. Also, if you're only making 5k per year, don't spend $500 per month on books or discretionary. Books you can get for free on genesis library. Spend it elsewhere or better yet put it away for the future. Seminars and courses likely won't make your employer pay you more, I personally suggest spending as little as possible on this stuff. Pay a $225 medbridge subscription and thats all you need to get your 30 CEU hours done every 2 years ($112/yr).
@dukesoffranks2718

Isn’t 60k a little low for not a small city? Dpt assuming. I know it’s first year but isn’t 75 doable out of college?

This has made me rethink my decision to not become a PT. Tech is the answer for me.
@CasualCasimir

It’s probably because of the state he is working at. Simple research shows that the median average of a PT is 80 K a year and the highest is 120 K so it’s just bad location for him.
