Shun, your channel and energy are amazing. I really enjoy the amount of detail you include and the unusual topics you cover. It's fascinating watching your personal journey from salaryman to creative RU-vidr, you're a very charismatic guy 👍 Your audio and editing are first rate. But, as a retired cameraman, can I suggest you consider a cheap Zhiyun gimbal to help with the wobbly camerawork ? Smooth high quality vision is the first thing people notice on a RU-vid video. It's really really unpleasant to watch sometimes for people who get motion sick ☹️ (like me)

Yeah, it's sad that he is made to feel this way about himself. I would say it is somewhat deeply rooted in the society. Even if someone has a job that makes plenty of money, if there is anything atypical about it people will frown upon it. I knew someone in Japan who made about 5 hundred grand working just 4 months out of the year as a contractor for a US company. Despite knowing roughly the situation, their neighbor still asked his wife every single day "Why doesn't your husband go to work?" or "When is he going to get a real job?" and other such questions. People want to see you go to working every day, during regular hours, or it isn't considered to be enough. Even something like starting your own company is somewhat frowned upon. It's better to just work for the man, and then over-work for him. A job isn't just about money-- it's also about self-sacrifice and how you spend your time. People will wonder what sort of selfish person can spend the free time on themselves that westerners would say they have "earned." From a western perspective, my friend earned enough to work only 4 months of the year. From a Japanese perspective, it may not just be about earning money to live. I hope this makes some sense. And again, it's only my own observation and perspective on the issue.

Everyone comparing the cost of living in the US (or other countries) seems to forget that the average annual salaries in Japan (including Tokyo) are a lot less than in the US. Shun Chan did a video where he talked about salaries with a friend and I was very surprised at how little people earn (relative to what comparable salaries would be here). I live in Philadelphia and pay $1200 a month for a 500 square foot apartment (46 m2) and I don’t even have a washer and dryer! And this is very cheap for my neighborhood. You can’t find a 1 bedroom apartment for under $1000 a month in my city unless you live in a very, very dangerous part of the city. I work at a restaurant and our least expensive sandwich is $15. Things cost more here but on average we earn more money. I could survive on less than $26 a day here if I didn’t eat out - I live close enough to work to walk (or take the bus, which costs $2.50 one way), and if you’re not including rent and other monthly expenses (like utilities).
@B-3490
@B-3490 2 года назад
Yeah, that's what I was also thinking. Like it's high for the AVG Japanese salary but Tokyo is a bargain compared to NYC. I live in the NYC metro area and it's so easy to spend over $100 in 1 day visiting Manhattan. So $20 a day in Tokyo would be "cheap" if you were making a similar salary in Japan that you would in the US. Actually interested in Philadelphia to have that Urban lifestyle like you have in NYC but at a fraction of the cost. I don't think they have nearly as many job opportunities as NYC tho

Yes but wages are not that different in the US for MOST people. Yes some people make more, but sooooo many more are struggling or living at home. Also Americans are completely oblivious to how much of their money goes to healthcare... no wasted on health insurance. Most people from other countries don't have to pay for and no their taxes arent outrageously more, that is BS propaganda. Sure maybe their taxes are a bit more but they get something more out of it

@@B-3490 A LOT of New Yorkers have moved to Philly in the past few years because it’s def cheaper to them. But, rents have skyrocketed and people keep blaming it on New Yorkers 🤣 we have plenty of high rises where 1 bedroom apartments are $3-4k+ a month. The places that are close to $1200-1500 are small 1 bedroom apartments in row homes (that’s what I have) and are becoming increasingly hard to find unless you live in a very dangerous part of town. New highrises are popping up out of nowhere. A new one is being built walking distance from my apartment, which means my rent will probably go up again soon. I work part time at a restaurant and work full time running my own cat sitting business. The people I cat sit for are mostly wealthy. I get to go in so many super expensive (millions of dollars) homes and apartments/condos that otherwise I’d never get to see 🤣

@@B-3490 yeah you can’t get a 1 bedroom in that range in center city. I like center city but can’t afford to live there. I live in south Philly, the East Passyunk neighborhood, and it’s awesome. Safe and super walkable. I don’t have a car and everything is in walking distance.

Great to see you back! I've noticed that prepared food in Japan is really cheap in comparison to the United States, but I suspect our raw ingredients (excluding rice of course) are cheaper. Your breakfast made me wonder if you ever had a full southern breakfast plate when you lived in the US. We do eat a lot of cereals (like your friend's oatmeal concoction), but the classic American breakfast is very hardy. It would have two eggs (made to order), bacon or sausage, breakfast potatoes, and biscuits and sausage gravy.

In every video I’ve watched that discusses costs in Japan (and especially Tokyo), the prices are way, way cheaper than where I live in the US. You can’t even get lunch at a fast food restaurant here for $5, and our average rents are 2-3x higher. However, what I’ve also learned is that the average pay in Japan, including Tokyo, is less than what we make on average here. So, a $5-10 meal there seems expensive to a Japanese person whereas it’s not seen as expensive here.
@TheBaldr

Japan has one of the best most organized domestic food supply chains. So food can easily get from the fields/sea to the factories/restaurants/stores easily and cheaper. It is the imported foods because of tariffs and generally not integrated well into the supply chain as well make price of those things much higher.

For a long time I really took it to heart that Tokyo was soo expensive but when I consider how overpriced things are in Canada (like phone plans, public transit, groceries, etc) I think it’s all relative. Granted I have to do the US to CAD conversion but still seems like not an unreasonable amount to spend in a day. If I have to buy lunch when I go to work, even if I buy a crappy prepared sandwich and a bubly at a grocery store I’m spending like $8 USD, never mind sitting down in a restaurant and having a decent sized meal. And public transit in most Canadian cities is very limited or unreliable and costs similar to what you paid in Tokyo - so in a lot of places you lose a lot of time getting around or spend more money to own a car and pay for parking/gas/insurance. I’m interested to see what free or low cost things you would take friends to who were visiting for the first time, as well as how to find good places to eat in Tokyo. At home and when I travel I rely pretty heavily on google maps/reviews but since I don’t speak or read Japanese I don’t know how useful it would be. I’m hoping to go to Japan next year once independent travel is permitted and I LOVE to eat when I travel but definitely like to look for good deals and avoid tourist traps/gimmicky places.

Drinks from a vending machine are 2.25 to 3.25 USD. I own a house, but rent is usually 1200 to 1600 USD for a nice 2 bedroom apartment. Renting a house will cost 2250 to 2850 USD per month. All a matter of perspective. $500 (£350) In London will get you a cardboard box on the street. $5 will get you a bag of chips.

The yen to dollar rate makes it seem cheap, but 800yen ramen really is more like spending $8 in practical life terms.
