There is no reason why our government makes data expensive for us, they own Vodacom Africa, MTN, Telkom and they even have equal shares with government of Kenya in the largest Network service in Kenya through Vodafone but this bastard's still find a way to make our data most expensive while our own MTN is cheaper in other countries, they just want less South Africans to have access to information that is. Rent KES 200K seems very high. I would say that should have been half, even in very good areas and furnished, maybe max KES 120K. One thing with housing in Nairobi is that you can find 2 very similar housings but very different in price, like one at 75K then the other at 130K. Housing is really where it is worth bargaining and research.

That was very reasonable especially when taking into consideration the standard of living is essentially well above that here in the US. I mean where in the US can you live in a 2BR in a nice area with amenities, all utilities, house keeping 3 times a week, eat out daily, go out regularly and take Ubers everywhere? No where! 🤣

Hey Julian, thanks for sharing...I think that considering your lifestyle and standards, your expenditure is not unreasonable. As long it was your own hard-earned money you were using, no one should judge you if you got what you wanted and it represented good value for you. I wish you had vlogged a bit more about your experiences in Nairobi (especially your going out adventures) but hopefully, there will be a next time 😄

While i appreciate the video, the viewers should know that his budget is more inline with a super-touristy short-term visitor. Ive lived in the same area - westlands, 2bdr - for years as a westerner and my costs are much lower. My phone is 1k for 5gb, food can be 700/day or less if you eat at more local restaurants or get hot food from the naivas around the corner, and I only know of 2 clubs in all of kenya that charge for entrance. I give him a pass on transportation because i cant expect him to know how to use local transportation - i pay 5-7k/month, including uber. Btw, i think skynest is closer to an extended stay luxury hotel instead of an apt. My apt is literally 2 streets away and i pay 70k + ~10k utilities but with no housekeeping. My monthly budget rarely exceed $1800. Compared to JNB, nairobi eats you on housing, while jo-berg gets you on transportation, phone, and misc expenses. Again, appreciate the video. It is very informative, but his budget is definitely on the high end - and he kinda admits it.

Hi Julian, I'm new to your page and have recently watched your pod, the one on your visit to the beach, now this one about your expenses in Kenya. It all sounds reasonable given your seemly standard of living, [ nice high-rise apartment living space ] from the area visible on screen. I just want to say, I'm a male African and I find cooking quite therapeutic and self-gratifying, especially when I want to escape the endless routine of the social and civic norms daily. Please try it sometimes, start with small simple projects like fresh veggies broiled with a touch of butter and a hint of brown sugar sprinkled, steamed white/brown rice at medium temperature, sauté a piece of fish [ purchased already cleaned and washed ], OfCourse in a sauce pan with a measured bit of water, with olive oil added and seasoned with spices, sprinkled with black pepper and a hint of sea salt, flip the fish over after a few minutes, [ you don't want to overcook it also use medium heat, after, turned down to low heat for simmering and then VOILA ! You've prepared yourself a gorgeous, healthy and tasty meal. A glass of white wine will do with fish. I too skip breakfast most mornings but try to have a cup of hot fluid, like maybe tea [ mint is very good ] or coffee. I'll be visiting Kenya, hopefully next Summer. I've blogged and have gotten to learn a bit about Nairobi. Enjoy Kenya and stay careful...Congratulations on your apartment.

Cape Town is definitely more expensive than Joburg. Cape Town is a coastal city with beautiful beaches, and landscapes so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth while on the other hand, Joburg has a lot of activities (depending on what you’re into). Joburg tends to be more dangerous, depending on where you are. Consider visiting surrounding areas as well, they tend to be safer than the cities and you’ll get the “African” experience without it being out of your comfort zone. For example., Mpumalanga has amazing places to see. Of course I’m assuming your intention is to visit and tour and not to move here. Have a safe trip and perhaps we’ll bump into each other 🥰🥰🥰

Julian, you are a bright, shining light radiating joy! Budgeting/costs are good for people to know! You may spend a lot on eating out but a lot of people would likely do the same. Yes, you're staying in luxury accommodations and paying for that, but you're getting a lot of amenities which if you were staying in a hotel would be an astronomical monthly cost--and you might not even have as nice of accomodations or amenities! It's much more cost efficient to rent an apartment for a month or whatever time frame than a hotel room. It might be worthwhile to do a cost comparison sometime. I hope your day is filled with the activities and people you enjoy! Sending love from Oregon!

Have to agree....South Africa in general offers better value for money in terms of real estate, majorly because of the cost of land. In Kenya the policy is more liberal and people hold land outrightly for speculation. The cost of construction is jst about the same even though RSA offers better quality and finishing for the same cost because of larger manufacturing that standardises thing like aluminium windows and so on.In addition, you have access to better infrastructure in South Africa cz obviously it's the more developed one. The South african economy is about 3 times larger than Kenya's. What you paid for data is what a 5 person household pays for wifi for the whole month in Kenya. Internet is way cheaper than South Africa. All in all, from low income to middle class, the experience in terms of lifestyle is more or less the same but as you approach the upper class and upper-middle class segments, South Africa has incredible value for money and not jst verses Kenya but the entire continent! I'm talking things like easy access to and cheaper loans, mortgages, education. The top schools like Hilton college are about 30% cheaper than the top schools in Kenya. Cars are cheaper, quality real estate is cheaper in South Africa. Land in the Most exclusive neighbourhood in Kenya,Muthaiga,is double what it would sell for in Bishopscourt or Constantia. It is also slightly more expensive than what it would go for in Steyn City. Runda is kind of like Waterfall but land 2 times more expensive. The beaches in Umhlanga and the entire Durban are about 5 times more expensive than the ones in Kenya though. The kenyan beaches are the better ones here. Also,Kenya is waaaaaaay safer. Both good ,progressive and Liberal countries

Land grabbing is a national sport in Kenya (quite possibly in other African countries also). Having lived part time in Kenya for almost 10 years, I have never, ever experienced anything like the scale of stealing land, selling other peoples land, simply just moving into other peoples land and property. Mind blowing ..... and I don't think I will ever get used to the sheer arrogance by which people just grab others property.

Except for the food you did okay. Honestly it would be cheaper to get a chef to shop ,cook and then stock up your fridge every week. But again not bad

I understand about the food expense lol. I love me some food so it's usually my biggest cost aside from rent. But I live in Mexico and it's way more affordable.

You should engage a househelp to cook and do the shopping n cleaning. She costs about 70 Dollars full time a month. That would have saved you a lot and food is good (contract an elderly person - best food would be from a Muslima)

Chile, I work from 8-5 only to cook a whole meal for another hour or 2? That and do the dishes? Please, call me lazy but I work to ease my lifestyle.
