I’m actually shocked that your expenses including your rent are much less than I imagined. You are good at budgeting!

Wow! What a great video. If I lived in France I would be going to the bakery several times a week too. Where I live in the Midwest US that type of pastries and breads are not common. If I find something like that at a bakery here it usually costs $5 or more. I definitely love the idea of lots of organic foods available and I would probably shop daily as well. Even your meals in restaurants seemed very reasonable to me. Thank you for teaching us about French culture. I enjoy your videos!

Hi, thank you for the video. As a bakery owner (in Belgium), I can tell you that the costs of energy became almost unbearable. And a bakery is a very energy-consuming business. Think about ovens, mixers, fridges and freezers, same goes to all other machines being used. The price of flour is also much higher than it used to be (especially since the war in The Ukraine started). And think about the fact that every ingredient needs to be shipped from somewhere, even if it's inside the country. And there you go- this is why a croissant is more expensive. But I think it's just about every food item. The small grocery shops will be more expensive, and the bio shops for sure. If you want to pay less, it's the basic like lentils, legumes, rice etc. I will usually pay weekly for 3 people, 120-140 euros, not including dining out, which we do once a week.

Wow, I can't imagine going to the grocery store that often. I believe my bill would be higher since I'd pick up "extras" whenever I shopped. This was very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I’ve been following your vlog with interest. This was very informative. I’m a retired-but youngish woman from Minneapolis MN. I lived in the U.K. for a few years and also Cuenca Ecuador in ‘19 (very European vibe and cheap) but became very ill due to the elevation….caused heart failure. Never considered moving to the coast as the vibe is not for me. I’ve always loved France and I’ve spent a few wonderful month-long trips there. It is now my goal to get my visa in Jan ‘25. Either Paris or Nice. I have a reliable and generous pension so very doable. Here in Mpls (the US in general) the middle class is disappearing along with affordable housing etc. not to mention healthcare. Just my rent is more than your total monthly expenses! Thank you for your excellent videos. Maybe I’ll look you up.

Thank you! I agree with some of the folks commenting. Here in Maryland (US) we are probably a bit higher if not comparable. I would just cut back on the boulangerie and buy more wine instead lol. Cheers

Very informative video. It's interesting to know what the costs are in France-Paris now. What shocked me is your phone and internet bill-it's so low😮it's definitely not common in Europe to have such low cost for that.

Everything is so much cheaper in Paris than in the US, and we also tip so much on top of regular prices, so we spend way more.

Paris is definitely cheaper than Northern New Jersey in the U.S. The craziest thing I think I spend money on are cage free organic eggs which are $8.99 for a dozen. Everything has gone up significantly and I highly doubt our food quality comes close to Europe. Thanks for this interesting and informative video!

This was so interesting. I live in Melbourne, Australia and the cost of food here is SO much more. I know croissant is a cultural thing over there but they are pretty easy to buy here as well. For the cheapest it would be around AU$3.50 per croissant and for the the fanciest it would be up to $7 or more and a good quality baguette would be around $6. There is no way three people could go out for dinner and have three courses with wine for that price; I would think it would be at least $150. Our public transport is very expensive, it costs $4.40 each way so $8.80 per day to go to work. I live in the inner city - 5km from the centre - and rents are going up like crazy. Our two bedroom one bathroom and one car space apartment has just jumped from $460 per week to $700 per week which is outrageous but is happening everywhere in Australia.

Wow that is WILD… I saw somewhere that the birthdate in Australia decreased by 70% YoY and that the cost of living had to do with it… would you say your salaries compensate for the super costs ? 😕 with a French salary all of that sounds unmanageable…
@lindyralph8792
@lindyralph8792 Год назад
@@Ariellelaparisienne I don't think that the birthrate decreasing that much is a thing, I've never heard about it. The cost of living crisis is really bad here. Wages are not going up, but everything else is. Last year I was studying and thankfully my partner has a decent wage and was able to pay the rent and bills. I'm working again now but with this new rent increase it's a big stretch. I was a single parent for 18 years and there is no way I would have been able to pay such high rent, I feel for all the people who don't have the earning capacity my partner and I have. For example, our standard grocery shop (about four bags full) used to be around $90 and now it's always $160. Rent gets slightly less expensive the further out into the suburbs you go but not by much. To go out for dinner at a 'French' restaurant here (which I love to do occasionally) the cheapest steak frites would be around $38 per person, add another $15 for a salad and the average glass of wine would be $15. Desert would be around $20 for creme brulee for example.

As always, love the video. Here in the US--specifically the Bay Area--it has always been expensive, but now it is ridiculous. Rents just keep going up, way up. Yesterday I spent the day with a friend in Marin County which is just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. We went to lunch at a seafood restaurant which was on the Bay. Our bill was over $90.00. It was really obscene. You had an image in your video of an assiette de fruits de mer. If we had gotten a mixed platter of mussels, a crab & some shrimp, it would have been $69. This is an average priced kind of place, but add in drinks, a side salad & vegetable or potato & you're talking some real money. Then I had to get gas or I would never have made it home. Regular gas was $5.49/gal. And yet I keep hearing that gas prices are going down. I guess compared to $7+/gal a short tme ago, yes it is a little less. But then I hear that gas in other states is down to $3/gal for regular &. it still feels crazy to me. I live in Davis (closer to Sacramento) & we have a good bakery that specializes in French croissants, bread & desserts. A croissant is $5.00. Somehow Paris which has always been expensive (& worth it) seems to stack up rather well against our cost of living.

Except that France, contrary to many countries, including the U.S. I think, has not adapted its salaries to reflect inflation. They haven't budged in years.
@sherrieshatzen3801
@sherrieshatzen3801 Год назад
@@Florence3121 Actually the US may be i even worse shape than France for most people's salaries. Because of the shortage of available/willing labor in some US markets wges have gone up a little bit. Still not nearly enough to keep up with inflation or the cost of living for many, many years. Mostly it is the upper 1% of the American workforce who have seen staggering growth in their income for quite a long time.
@Theworldisyourplayground0011

It wouldnt be cheaper, but the difference in price is shrinking… the cost of restaurants has increased very very minimally (approx 0.50€ per dish) whereas groceries have seen a HUGE increase near 30%… 😕

Cancel movie pass... learn an instrument, or learn another language, or search for free hobbies. USA has doubled if not more for all of our foods and our homes have gone up over $100,000! Good Luck.

I live in LA, not cheap. I do have to say after 2 weeks in Paris, I was shocked at the food prices. Dinners were really expensive. Hot chocolate at Carette for 2 with a pastry each was 45$. That's a lot. Bagettes and croissants and pain au chocolate may seem like a lot, but look at the process to make theses things!
