$500 a month to live in paradise? I'm breaking down all my costs here per month and I'm meeting many Americans who are completely living as digital nomads. I'm asking them the pro's and con's and figuring out if this lifestyle is for me.

I'm local Balinese but live in Lombok. I think these Digital nomad or new wave hippies and eastern european expats are destroying Canggu and southern Bali as a whole. I really miss Bali 10 to 15 years ago. That's the last time when Bali were stil viewed as an escapism paradise, the thousand Gods Island shrouded with mysteries, sacred, and still natural. Now, it's just a tourist island like Ibiza and skyrocketing pricey properties and land. This is the result of overtourism.

By law, you don't have to pay taxes if you work here (in our country) as a digital nomad, as long your income doesn't comes from Indonesia. By law, if you want to get these privileges and if you are intend to do so, you must apply and stay in Indonesia under digital nomad visa. You can't come here on a tourist visa and work as a digital nomad. Please don't abuse your visa permit. It violates immigration laws of Republic Indonesia. You may get deported and banned for years.

@Abduhrabbani Год назад
technically you still can using tourist visa or voa, there's no law about tourist who reply their bosses emails during vacation or managing their overseas business while doing vacation, the difference is the period of stay and extendability of the visa. the strict law is applied for foreigners who make money in indonesia as individual ( e.g photographer or yoga instructor) or working "undertable" for indonesian company (even foreign owned like PT PMA) and even if the foreigners get those working permitt or visa, they can only work at that specific job with that specific company who sponsor it. the law is made to protect local citizens from losing their business or jobs from the foreigners.

@MJBsays
@MJBsays Год назад
@@Homer-OJ-Simpson I understand, but again VN is not cheaper. It used to be, not anymore. I live in HCMC and have for 4 years, and last Christmas we had to go to Bali on vacation because frankly we couldn't afford a domestic holiday in VN. I also went to Bali before the pandemic and naturally compared pre & post pandemic with VN. Par to par with where I live, some areas of Bali are more economical in accomodation, food (especially if international or foreign food), transport and even tourist attractions/tours. And service is 100x times better in Bali. As someone who visits occasionally, as opposed to a digital nomad living there my only hope is that people keep respecting its culture and don't bring nasty behaviours or habits as it happened in other places, like in south America for example with countries like Ecuador which used to be rock bottom cheap living and now it's more expensive than California.
@Homer-OJ-Simpson

The crazy part that people keep talking Bali to compare with whole country in neighborhood like Vietnam and Thailand. @MJBsays
@MJBsays Год назад
@@houseoftyrell1544 I compared to where I live, Ho Chi Minh City, and can compare to places like Da Nang, Hoi An, Phu Quoc etc. not the whole of VN. Bali can indeed be compared to tourist destinations in VN since that's where tourists go. And when I compare par by par for me Bali wins. It's not secret that VN's ministry of tourism is targeting wealthy tourism. Ask anyone who lives here. They have been building exclusively 5* resorts all over the country for the past 5 years. VN is not interested in independent travellers and digital nomads.

once upon a time NY and LA and other cities were like this you could afford to move to a cheap part of town and make ends meet but no longer - rents and stagnant wages and the rise of tech bros/finance bros have led to basically no lifestyle in the U.S. however, this is still possible in Asia or S. America, and because of the rise of Amazon, and globalized stores like costco/H&M you will be living the same exact lifestyle at 1/3 of the cost so you can actually live your life and get ahead instead of having 5 roomates + no savings.
@Homer-OJ-Simpson
@Homer-OJ-Simpson Год назад
Wages aren’t stagnant. They’ve been growing for a long time. Housing costs in the popular US cities have indeed been rising for years. Housing costs overall not as much of a rise - people just seem to flood to maybe the 10 or so best cities in the US while the rest are normal as always
@tann_man
@tann_man Год назад
@@Homer-OJ-Simpson Wages in the US have been left in the dust by gdp, productivity, inflation and a whole host of other metrics ever since 1971. We left the gold standard and fractional reserve banking took its place. When the supply and interest rate of money is manipulated at will the lower class farthest away from the money printer suffer. This is especially true during 2020 when nearly half of all dollars ever created was minted and interest rates were suppressed and the largest wealth transfer to the upper class from the lower in history was recorded. Fake money wasn't the only problem that began in the 70s. Women started taking birth control and they started working. The supply of workers nearly doubled so relative compensation shrank. Birth control also means fewer Americans began having families. We've been below replacement levels since and our population has only grown due to importing immigrants but recently even that isn't working. Soon the economy will suffer as the smaller working age population struggles to support the elderly boomers. Small towns are also dying because the agriculture industry is becoming more and more productive. There are no jobs anymore in rural places anymore therefore everyone flocks to the cities and if you're going to a city you might as well go to a city where the weather is decent and there are plenty of jobs so the densest 25 or so metros in the US grow and grow.

Uptin, in your opinion, with overall world inflation, what is the minimal gross annual income in USD required for Q1 2023 to live in a decent condo-style apartment in this Bali, Thai city except Bangkok, a Mexican city, you name it, get Western-style medical and dental services, save for retirement in a non-Western country with monthly 700-800 USD allowance? My opinion is that annual gross income should be 120+ k USD. Also I think that a decent income is for 5, 10, 15 years maximum, then a person is outpaced in competition with younger workers, so I do not consider some ideal situation that an average person graduates at the age of 22 with no student debt, goes to some Bali with 120k income immediately and works happily till age of 60 or 65 with pay annually increased, without layoffs.

Be white, the answer to all of life's questions. If you're not white, work your ass off to get a green card to get work from the US or other rich EU countries, just like the India homies did.

There is currently a major crackdown and a newly formed Task Force to revoke visa for anyone working in bali without a work visa and pay taxes! NPWP tax card once you get work visa

This whole modern colonialism thing is just such bs. The locals already has an advantage when it comes to starting a business in Bali. So they should just use their brains and find new and innovative methods to convince tourists to spend more money in Bali. Without tourism there’s hardly any significant industry there.
