I have now driven my Tesla for over 8000 miles and wanted to see what the cost was associated with gas savings. There’s also a few interesting things that I have observed while making these videos, more to come. Enjoy!

I’ve owned a model 3 for a year before I got rid of it and here are my takeaways: Tesla build quality is absolutely piss poor. A lot of technical problems plagued the driving systems. Tesla had my car for 2 months out of the year i had it. All issues were software related and one of the problems that really irritated me was being Incapable of driving my car due to sensor malfunctions. (My new Hyundai hasn’t given me a single issue) The road noise. This car is quiet obviously but the build quality completely accentuates the noise going on in the cabin. I have a modified exhaust on another car but that is bearable compared to the constant cracking and creaks that come from my Tesla. Self driving was also so incredibly useless. It uses basic cameras to read signs so whenever I’m in the far left lane doing 80 like everyone else and the car reads a 55mph sign it instantly slows with no regard to anyone else and it irritates me to no end as this can be exceptionally dangerous me and everyone around me. The infotainment screen being off to the right also angers me as the one sole thing a driver needs is their speed. Being off to the right is absolutely dangerous as it takes my eyes off the road. Crash avoidance is cool but the driver is solely responsible. And lastly, the driving experience. It’s a terrible car. Comfortable sure. But it’s so muted. It’s a boring drive always. The acceleration is the only saving grace but that accelerates the battery wear. And here’s the best part. That warranty you speak of will be void. Tesla will blame you for the wear and will not cover the costs. A model 3 replacement battery is upwards of 18-25k. That’s a new car. Do not buy Tesla. I’ve owned the Ioniq 6 for a few months now and without question, the tesla is like a metro geo compared to this. And it’s a Hyundai. Research before you buy people. Teslas are mediocre cars in the long run. Never again. Best of luck to you with yours sir.

These are all interesting points. I find the car very enjoyable to drive, but I wouldn’t say I’m a “car person”. I think auto pilot is terrific, but mostly agree with your other points. My question for you, is why are you so confident Tesla won’t honor their warranty? Did this happen to you? Someone you know? Cheers!

@@TechbyParker I have been blamed for one of the software issues I had actually. Unfortunately my vehicle would not allow itself to charge. Thankfully the batteries did not need to be replaced but another part’s sensor malfunctioned. The car was drivable but once I ran out of battery that was it. Tesla tried to indicate “driver fault” was the cause but after fighting for 2 weeks they finally decided to cover the part under warranty. As for the battery pack. A friend had a model y that also suffered the same problem, being unable to charge, he however did need his entire battery replaced (not the 12v) and they did not cover the party under warranty as the mileage was close to their warranty limit, they used some technicality to ensure they would not cover the replacement. He was thoroughly upset as the car was only 3 years old. He drives a lot to which they attuned the official reasoning to decline the coverage. Saying the vehicle was used “outside the intended usage” he took the car to a drag strip 2 times. They data logged back to see what could’ve cause the premature issue and decided it was “driver fault” I pray you do not see any of our problems. For a time the car was good. But the overall issues and constant software maintenance just ruined the driver experience unfortunately. I hope you can enjoy ownership. I do not wish or mean to scare you. Just want awareness of the potential problems you might face when dealing with Tesla once the vehicle is near or at the end of warranty. Again I wish you never see my issues. I’m fully aware of well over 100k miles teslas with extremely minimal maintenance. Unfortunately just received a problematic one. Best of luck as I said to you and yours sir. It can be a good car. Just sad I didn’t get that experience.

Very good info. Thanks for sharing, I’m crossing my fingers here. I’m hoping the 2023 model has less issues than the pre-2020 models but who knows…

Batteries can last as long as engines if properly maintained...just like an engine. Less maintenance overall, less cost per milage, convenient at home charging, the perks stack.

@@DerekDavis213 I know it's not the norm at this time, but a friend of a friend (that also has an EV) has a rental house and his current renters moved in with an EV and for a while charged off the 120 volt outlet in the garage. After a couple of months the tenants asked if he could add a 240 volt outlet. It ended up being just under $800 for the electrician and the tenants agreed to a $25 per month surcharge until they signed a new lease the following year which would properly reflect the value the charging capability brings, and he has tenant that he likes that has a good reason to keep renting from him with a roughly 3 year payback on the original investment. I get this doesn't address apartment buildings and lots of condos, but there will be investment in this kind of infrastructure as well.

Interesting, if you can charge at home, it makes having an EV way more worth it than if you can’t in my opinion

A Camry Hybrid gets 630 miles on a tank of gas. And refilling the tank takes 5 minutes. Tesla cannot compare to that. Tesla also has more expensive insurance, and more expensive DMV registration .

It depends on what you are trying to compare and how you use a car. On the refilling time: In the last year driving an ICE (and the Camry Hybrid is an ICE), I fueled up 77 times and would concur that it was about 5 minutes per fill curb-in to curb-out; that comes out to just shy of 6.5 hours over the course of a year spent at the gas station. By contrast, with my Model 3, I plug it in at home*** about 3 times a week, and it takes me no longer than 10 seconds to plug it in and 10 seconds to unplug; that works out just under 1 hour over the course of a year of my time spent "fueling". If I go on a road trip (I've done Seattle to LA, Seattle to Oakland, Seattle to Idaho, and I'm doing Seattle to Portland this weekend for the fifth or sixth time) I know I'm going to give back some of that time; the Oakland trip cost me a hair over an hour more each way in the Model 3 than it would have in an ICE. As for fueling cost in my case: Over 12 years and 222k+ miles, my Subaru Impreza WRX cost me 13.5¢ per mile in fuel (based on the average of $3.099/gallon actually paid). My fuel cost for my Model 3 when I charge at home is 3.5¢ per mile (based on my electricity rate of 11¢ per kWh). Currently, 87 octane is $4.679 per gallon at the local Safeway (20.4¢ per mile in the Subaru); it's a bit more at most stand-alone gas stations and a bit less at Costco. Since August of 2018, based on my ACTUAL driving, and accounting for charging costs at home and at Superchargers on road trip, and comparing that to the weekly local fuel prices for the Seattle area as reported by the US Energy Information Administration, I've saved just over $12,000 in fuel as compared to if I were still driving my Subaru. As for the subjective overall driving experience, that's where I think it's more difficult to compare, and in my view, the Camry lags far behind the Model 3 (and yes, I have experience with both; limited on Camrys, but my wife and I have owned 6 Toyotas; our Prius is the second car in the family right now). ***I do understand that not everyone has the capability to charge at home and if you can't, this line of argumentation is not applicable to your use case.

Your situation may be different, but when I priced out tires and insurance on a 2016 Model X, the numbers didn't make sense. It will cost $100 more per year for a set of tires (5 year lifespan) and $100/mo more for insurance vs. a hybrid. If I only save $600/yr in gas, I'm still coming WAY out ahead in price. I really want to be able to get something I can pug in at home, so if that's worth the extra money to someone, then by all means go for it.

Question: What's the insurance difference between a comparatively priced Honda Accord and your Tesla Model 3? Honestly, I didn't pull the trigger on a Tesla because my insurance would have been double in NJ.

Yeah, when you battery fails person doesn't equate it to when your transmission or engine has issue for the same person. The same person will say on long road trips, I could refuel in 5 minutes yet the same person doesn't add the time the rest of the year having to go get gas which could be 5-15 minutes time each equating it to another 8 hrs or so a year and forgetting oil change time which could be an hour or two a few times a year.
@TheoWerewolf
@TheoWerewolf 3 месяца назад
Uhm... none of those are even real-world equivalencies. Most people don't suddenly get up in the middle of the evening and think: 'hey - I need gas' then go out on a road trip to refill their tanks. They do it when they're already driving. A Tesla battery pack costs $10,000 - $20,000. A new Toyota Corolla SE is just $22,500 FOR AN ENTIRE NEW CAR. And I've owned three cars so far bought new and other than regularly taking it for service every six months (which is a cost but mainly brakes and tires which applies to Teslas as well) none of my cars ever died from engine or transmission issues. However, EV batteries are LiON batteries and they will eventually fail because they have a limited number of recharge cycles.
@baileym4708
@baileym4708 3 месяца назад
@@TheoWerewolf - you are making up scenarios. Nobody said anything about waking up in the middle of the night. Real world scenarios are, especially for those who are married with children is to go get fuel so the wife/husband can go to work without stopping in the morning going to work or with kids or just driving by as you say. Regardless, each time takes times especially if you use busier places like Costco gas. I guess the simplest way to put it for you, if you had a gas pump at home vs having to drive to one, would there be the incurred? There is time. You act like most EV drivers don't have ICE cars or haven't driven ICE cars to know the difference and you are schooling us on going to the gas station as well...lol. The 100,000 warranty to both are equivalent. I'm not saying one is better or worse, they have different benefits yet your worst case scenarios for EVs vs best case for ICE is wrong. Tesla batteries will last and 22 to 37 years driving around 13,500 miles per year. You compare a dinky no power Corolla yet very very reliable. Why not Jeep, Dodge, Range Rover, Hyundai engine (had mine replaced under warranty but they can go bad), American pickup truck transmissions, etc? You are okay with driving a Corolla, good go ahead dork.

So what your saying is the warranties appear to by pretty comparable. And a significant portion of their cars (Kia/Hyundai)are easily stolen with a USB cable making them almost uninsurable because they were too cheap to chip the key. Shall we talk about theft rate next?
