I have just come to Perth Australia after 5 weeks in China most of that time in Guangzhou, we ate Lot cheaper than you and did in our apartment sometimes but always had lunch out, we tried many different restaurants lol. This time I wanted to stay longer as we really enjoyed just chilling out and looking around Guangzhou, we did take a few hispeed train trips and thought how nice it would be if there was some in Australia😊

Hi Cinthia! Thank you for sharing your perspective. It is always difficult to compare standards and costs. I think in general there are economic benefits to living in cities with the masses which help those wanting to save. For myself, along with income, I want to know how much free time I have and what can I do with it? One can always make more money, but one can never make more time.

Here in Canada we are facing something similar with medical care even though it is supported by taxpayers. We too have an aging population, lack of family doctors, long waiting time for treatment and rural-urban disparity of medical care.

It should be noted that in China you don't pay property tax and a lot of people won't pay or pay low income taxes comparing to their real income (not like in the USA). Roughly you can treat 1 USD as 3-4 Chinese RMB when comparing the actual purchasing power/price (against the official 1 USD = roughly 7.2 RMB conversion rate). In China, the one major cost item is housing/apartment if you don't have one yet (so if you are a local and you already own an apartment, literally you can live an good/OK to comfortable life with almost any income level because you don't pay property tax and the other living costs are usually low such as public transportation, food, clothing, etc).

I am i Shanghai and went to a fancy department store by the Jing'An Temple. In their lower lever grocery store are selling American 🍒 cherries for 198 rmb for 500g. According to your exchange rate 3-4rmb/USD, it would be $50-66 per half kg. With 1-7.2 xe, it's only $25/lb. Is it realistic? You get these cherries for $3/lb in the US.

Great info. Someone earning the minimum wage of $350 or so could actually live okay as long as they don't go overboard with expenditure. What about the credit system though. Its particularly crucial for a consumption based economy after all

I want to live in China and I need some advise. Is Gyangzhou a good place to live? How easy it is to go to Hong Kong (price and travel time)? Sorry I have a lot of questions.
@Cinthia_Lin

Personal tax rate ranges from 3% to 45% in China. The salary stated is the take home income after tax and social insurance contribution. GZ is one hour high speed rail away from HK and it is the city that has lots of good food. You are right, I can’t believe ribeye meal costs the same as a Big Mac XD

What’s the rental price or apartment (to buy) price for location with restaurants and grocery within 300m, close to a tier 3 hospital, close to easy transport to Hong Kong? She is a bit overweight with health issues. One bedroom is ok but has to have bathtub and western toilet. (I know she’s asking for a lot). Thanks!

In the old days of central planning, statistics were faked and unreliable and bureaucrats and party cadres wanted to make things look better than they were, to meet unrealistic quotas, to impress superiors and the rose coloured glasses syndrome. China has transitioned to a market economy but today statistics are affected by lack of good data, lack of transparency and the incentive for corruption that they nurture. Getting from what we see today to a point where they reflect reality, are accurate and free from considerations driven by political expediency and unethical conduct, is still a challenge for China.

Are cars expensive in China as with other Asian countries such as Thailand?
@davidk.d.7591
@davidk.d.7591 10 месяцев назад
The main reason they're expensive in Thailand is because of import duty. Most cars sold in China are manufactured there. Also with EV's you can get for under $20k without having to pay an extra $7k or so for license plate

Non private sectors include the government, corporate, public service, and more, people who work in these areas are usually better educated.
