In this video, I will share with you some causes of why young Chinese couples’ willingness to have babies declined, and how the government and individuals in China should respond to the change of population structure.
As you say, the problems China faces to one degree or another is a problem most opf the developed world has to face. One problem you did not mention (and this is generally overlooked in this discussions elsewhere) is a smaller population also means a smaller tax base. Increased mechanisation means more work is done by machines, but while work done by humans is taxed work done by machines is not taxed. We need to be more creative in a tax systems to generate tax from other sources than simply from individual humans. The other problem with a declining population is that the reduced family size means there is less personal support for individuals that can be available from the family, so somehow the state needs to increase the support available for individuals and do so with declining resources.
Greeting Cinthia! I spent this AM watching your YT content. Very refreshing. I have been watching YT content regularly for about 8 years now primarily focused on food, finances, and politics in South East Asia with a lesser interest in gaming. Your content is very refreshing, pure, and dare I say, altruistic. I will make another comment on your last video. Well done!
Good quality of this video, really amazing. Thanks for your sharing about the current situation of China. It’s pretty much the same with Taiwan here. But in the near future I guess there will be less and less needs for human force due to the good progress we’ve gotten in Artificial Intelligence domain, just like you described in the end of video. Instead, maybe the next main issues will be like elder cares.
Having a child costs like a mortgage. In the 70s and 80s our parents raised us on the cheap but I wouldn't fo the same. Children are not investments or cattle.
I don't think China need more population. It need higher quality population. By higher quality, I mean better knowledge, better utilization of resources, better living standard for rural/semi-rural, better job environment and practices. There are many bad habits that really shouldn't remain in today's China, e.g, the "饭局", "关系" (FAN JU, GUAN XI) 饭局 - unnecessary get-together semi-official meals often for the sake of superior showcasing their authority and bossy advices. This are personal time being invaded by unofficial work. 关系 - everything goes by relationship or how well they know each other instead of being truly competitive or value-added. This is a Kleptocracy in nutshell.
If this is how the young generation feels, then they need to look and plan their futures. Building care homes for old age. I work in private care sector in UK and those who don’t have families and no children, need some services to take care of them. Raising a family is never going to be easy, I’ve raised my children and continued to work, of course it’s never going to be easy and never had grandparents to help with childcare. Forget what government and politics want, your children will be yours and not the government’s.
Excellent and informative presentation on China's population structure. Much has been said about this topic and your ideas seem among the best I have heard. In the future, China's smaller population will be even more highly educated, allowing the country to take advantage of the move towards AI.
not so sure. In china, only 50% of the teenagers can enroll in high school and fewer in college. The government has implemented a policy to ensure only a small fraction of its population can receive college education. I have never seen such a policy in most developed countries.
@@jimingpeng5203 Are you sure China's high school graduation rate is only 50% ? At least the high school graduation rate I've encountered in China is well over 50 percent, which should be a 12-year compulsory education.
no. Even in Shanghai and Beijing, only 50% of the students in middle school can enroll in high school, and the rate is only around one third in many small cities in China. The Chinese government imposed such a policy nationwide, and the majority of chinese only received education to middle school..
I cant imagine a place where there is no children running around coz in my country, every street is like a playground. its like there are baby factories everywhere. we need to limit population growth in my country. Plus side, we dont need to worry but fewer peope supporting a huge older population coz ave age in our country is only 22
Less population means better future for the younger generation but at the same time there are price to be paid for that. Some of the work AI can replace humans but i think there are also limitations for that. China needs younger generations for their economy so that it can continue to be its possession as progressive nation
When I was a kid I kept hearing and reading how overpopulation was going to destroy the planet. Now that a population self-correction is in place in most of the world, people still worry. Society and individuals will adapt.
I wonder Cinthia will be stay single like lots of Asian young adults or seeking to married one day like her parents generation? Anyone know what's her decision on this matters? 🤔
The only thing different about the causes for the crisis that you listed is China’s child policies. Everything else on that list are things that parents have to deal with everywhere.
There are more Chinese men than women and they have to find a foreign woman to marry just to have a companion. Countries that doesn’t reproduce due. The CPC thought it would reap the benefits of a lower birth rate and it discovered it was wrong! Here’s the problem with a regime that can’t tolerate dissent: its frowning on negative feedback ensures it can’t see social icebergs ahead until its too late to correct course. By the time the course is corrected, the damage is already done.
A simple reason, people will only have children under the premise of a relatively high sense of security and enough affordability. However, china’s social welfare is very limited and the income for most of people is very low and their’s income just can satisfy basic life requirements. At the same time, the house price is crazy in china and far away from the affordable ability of ordinary people. In this scenario, it’s reasonable that most people don’t want to have children.
I watched the whole video, and you missed asking the basic question, do you want a kid? If you are NOT sure, then do not have kid. If you want a kid, then taking care of the kid will demand all your free time. You will be doing a lot of laundry because the kid, taking them to school, telling him/her to wash the hand, constantly feed them, and constantly thinking of ways to keep them busy because you will heard the word “I am bored” almost every day. The kid will wake you up early because he/she want to start playing as soon as possible. It’s best to have at least two kids, as they can play with each other. Otherwise, the one kid will demand for your attention. On the issue of cost, I am sure you can find solutions. I lived in expensive Silicon Valley in California, and families here find ways to manage living cost. You should be aware having a kid over the age of 35 is risky because the kid might have Down Syndrome.
Infinite growth of economies is an unachievable myth, and the alarms sounding over declining birth rates across the globe in advanced nations are all in pursuit of the myth of infinite growth.
There is a way to get the child birth rate up and have more jobs for each family.... Have women OUT of the work force during child bearing years , From 18 thru 45 women are not allowed to work. Then give those women that have children a basic monthly allowance to help pay for raising those children . That way Men have more jobs and women raise the children and take care of the husband , the standard that has been for most of all human history .
Whole South East Asia has too many people, It is not bad at all that population is declining. It is very beneficial for whole region to have less mouth to feed.
Yes I love your videos on China 🇨🇳 because China is changing each day, and it has a higher rank of quality people than here in the USA , China is the new technology hub .it will be the future of our world as we know it.
On the one hand there is a shortage of women, but still many chinese women want a westerner or even not any husband. So maybe the problem is somehow chinese men.
If you don't have children in China, who will take care of you when you are old and sick ? Who will bury you when you die ? Who will visit you at your funeral ?🤕🤔
because they are having PETS so why need a child! No college education is needed for pets. You have a dog too. Adopt babies if needed. Test tube baby is another solution.
Child birth and child care at least in Asia shall be "self-controlled" by bank statements. However, policies often sided with the poor since that's the majority of the population and in order to win the votes of these people. Policies shall encourage people who are so called underprivileged to get pregnant so that the society can somehow helped them raised the kid and in turn hope that particular family will get better in the future. However, for those that are "successful", basically you need to buried the term "work life balance" deep in the ground and worked 80 hrs a week in Asia. Yet, they don't get no help from policy..... instead... they spent so much time working, there is no time for child care. Judging from the "phenotype" perspective, why we allow "lesser" genetic material to be passed on while proven superior (those who made it in the world) genetic to be left out to dry. That's something to think about
Great summary, thanks! I think the elephant in the room that people avoid talking about is: why bring a child into this world if you know that she or he will have no agency in it? Speaking personally, if I have been spending my life as a cogwheel of a punitive society, as a puppet in an oppressive regime forced into obedience and subservience, clearly I do not wish my next generation to suffer my same fate. A child has no choice to be born, but potential parents do have a choice.
"cogwheel of a punitive society, as a puppet in an oppressive regime forced into obedience and subservience" I envy your "remote viewing" super human capability...I mean, who wouldn't, you don't have to be there physically to know everything about the place.
But that doesnt mean that China or Chinese Population shouldnt have kids. Atleast a Minimum of Two Children is required for a Healthy and Prosperous Family. A child doesnt only bring burden but also luck, material and non material benefits..As our Population in China ages, We want to see a Highly Talented Population that can contribute richly to the World. Not just from a Scientific-Technological perspective but from also from the social influences it creates onto others. Of how Mature the CPC had been, how responsible it had been when we were poor and weak. Our Ancestors or Your Ancestors toiled so hard in the day just to put three meals before you. Today, Life has become a bit comfortable for all of you. It would have been like other country had all your ancestors never put any effort or the CPC. Today, you and your friends bear great responsibility to develop China by marrying at a right age by letting another generation continue to see the hard earned glory to our Nation and Civilisation . I hope Better Wisdom Prevail in our Han Families and make China the Most Profound and Deep and Prosperous in all fronts as a Civilisation. Take Care. ❤
This is a nonsensical conclusion, as a society you need to have young people, to work, to care for elderly, to produce, having fewer kids that you can’t afford is one thing, but Chinese people are doing it to themselves, it’s a sickness, people solidly in middle class only having 1 kid because of their own biases about success or not even having any.
