How Much Land Do You Need For A Homestead?

Before buying any land check with your counties ordinance on animals. Where I live in KS even poultry requires 5+ acres. And check what water/mineral rights come with the land or you could end up with useless land that you can’t even put a well on

You look great! Love the tree behind you. You took on such a big endeavor buying your original piece of land, building your own cabin etc....you are amazing and it took a lot of courage and determination to do that. I give you alot of credit and admire that. You took on something very big that alot of people would never had considered. How do you know that if you had started out with a bigger piece of land, it might have been overwhelming? Now you are ready to move on to bigger. Yes moving everything will have its challenges, but you keep focusing on how happy you are going to be when it's all done and have more peace of mind😁 I wish you the very best.

I’m looking to build soon. I have 78 acres on the lot I’m thinking of building on. I still have had neighbour issues over the years, and I have only 5 neighbours. One very important thing is water. Having a good well with good water and lots of it. I got a free a well.. make sure you know where your lot line / property line is. Lol

10 acres is about the perfect size. I have 20 acres and it’s almost too much to keep maintained. I’d love to have 1000 acres but as far as building/mending fence, brush hogging, land clearing etc 10 acres is probably about the max for most people to be able to keep.

Becky, good advice. My son bought a home in Oklahoma City ok. He has almost 5 acres. He bought it with a house already on it. Because it was an unconveniential home he only paid for the land. It's buried in the side of a hill. The people who originally built it wanted it be off grid later. Steel reenforced concrete, wood burning stove, south facing windows, roof overhang above windows designed to keep out summer sun, angled for efficient solar exposure so that solar panels could be added later, the realtor said it could be bulldozed. All surrounding properties have what I call "Mc Mansions" on them. (Huge three story monstrosities on them.) He loves what he has and plans to install the off grid remaining pieces as he can afford.

We have 9.21 acres and our house and coop and garden and barn are all on like 2 of those acres, right next to the neighbor....BUT!.... the neighbor is a cattle farmer, and they've been great.

I just moved into my homestead. 10 1/2 acres. Lots of space for what we need.

I have a feeling if I moved to the Alaskan wilderness the sasquatch family next door would drive me nuts!

Initially I though 4-5 acres was enough but 10 acres seems the best for me. Mainly because maintaining anymore than that might be a bit much especially as I get older. Its in my dreams. Nice house, greenhouse, solar panels, and chickens. :) Also the biggest thing is what happens 10 years next to me. I don't want things being built nearby so 10 acres keeps some distance too me.

Agreed, people make too much noise. And I feel self conscious about making any noise. I'm thinking 9 acres square and using 1 acre in the center.

Not trying to be negative but why are you certain that 6 acres will be enough forever when 5 acres wasn’t (and 20 is way too many)? I don’t understand how one more acre will keep neighbors from encroaching.

Becky, I started out with five acres and wish now I had bought 10-25 acres! Square is good. You can do a lot with five but for privacy, it may not be enough.

We have over 7 acres and no neighbors on either side for at least another 5 acres in each direction and it's on a subdivided farm. We raised and homeschool the fam here with a family garden and rescued dogs. They are all grown, we actually would love more land but taxes have gotten so crazy all around us. Maybe talk about land and school tax as it's so insane everywhere. Blessings.

We have 4.15 acres with a family of 6!!! We do plan on getting bigger and better later so that we can have a cow. As it sits we have room for a decent orchard, a huge garden, at least 5 goats, or 3 goats and a pig. As well as a pond already on property.

how much money would you spend on land? A lot of land I see online (texas/nevada/arizona) is 10,000 to 20,000 $ for 15-20 acres. But it also looks like a desert so I don't know how cows and horses are expected to graze or how I would get water.

I admire your Love of the land. We have 8.75 acres. I wish I could homestead, but alas I’m disabled and can’t dig in and do things it takes to really Homestead. I have 4 hens and we have a stoked pond. Wild blueberries and I’ve planted some raised beds. I love the peace of having space around me and neighbors are at a distance that we all enjoy each other with out hearing everything they do. Plus I get to enjoy my Wild Life neighbors.

Hi Becky. I have roosters and layer hens that is younger than 1 year old that use to give me fertile eggs but I haven't been getting any fertile eggs since of late.. what could be the cause ?

When I see a plot of land after the dimensions I presume I need, it's always too small. Example: I figure 10 acres, then I see a 10 acre plot and it's smaller than my math and my needs. I don't want to over imagine or under imagine. I have specific use in mind. A little lost...

i found 3 acres with a house in poor condition, in a rectangular property, I need good fencing and a barn, the neighbors houses are pretty far away from me because their homes are spaced away from us. I want to make a dry lot , and a "track" surrounding the property line, for the donkeys and the pasture in the middle of the track. Neighbors have chickens. I want bees all the way in back of property line by a garden. I plan on putting the barn on the side where no one from the street sees it, and its nestled behind bushes and trees separating one side where the neighbors are slightly closer. Both have dogs so I need fencing!! and I hate to get electric fence but dont know what to do to keep cuyote and other critters out. ANY FENCING BARN Videos/ideas extremely appreciated!

I'm buying in Southern California (extremely expensive) and my husband will have to commute to work so I'm wondering more what the minimum amount of land would be to have a homestead, like logistically. Anything with 5 or more acres would be too expensive and too far away from his work.

As a child we/my family first had 4 acres then about 7 yrs later we had 40 acres. Yes the 1st land was pretty,a big creek almost surrounding the property but it did start seeming smaller every year...the 40 acres seemed huge for many years....then it changed when ppl started moving in around us,though still big enough .......what Im saying it all starts looking smaller over time with changes.....but at least i have a good idea of what I want....and what i can afford! Im taking some time though to learn everything i need to know about restrictions,etc and land sure isnt getting cheaper but you can find rare good deals.

Gosh I’m on 1.5 acres and that’s even a bit too much as you have to mow the grass so I would hate more.its all personal preference though.

5 acres sounds good, but I'm afraid my husband & I can't afford 5 acres. The houses here are very expensive on 5 or more acres So sick and tired of living around people and their noise, walking dogs pass our house, loud music, firecrackers. It just makes me sick! We're looking for something in the country around 2 acres. I hope we'll have some privacy there!!

The title is misleading Becky, you only mention noise from neighbors as a criteria. You didn't mention savings, income level, having enough to build with or homwsteading goals (not everyone wants horses and cattle on their homestead and many wouldn't have any money for building after buying 6 acres.)

Here in Colorado in order to use your well water outside of your house you must be on a minimum of 35 acres. We are on 40.

Funny some people feel about animal noise the way we feel about people noise. I live in a noisy area. People walking past my house do not know how to speak without yelling and throwing around the curse words. Of course, I use a few curse words but not when anyone is around. Lol. Laura

Hey Becky thank you for the video I enjoyed it and I agree with what you say there but when I do eventually get my property I need 46 Acres of heavily wooded land because there's things I got to do on my property that's why I need so much and I don't want to feel like a sardine stuck in a can like I am now

I am in Australia. Prices for everything are very expensive. I am saving, but I wouldn't be able to afford acres and acres. 1 acre is affordable for me

I got 6000 sq ft in North NJ. Yes I Overpay $10k a year in property tax. I got no floods, earthquakes, tornadoes or anti social lunatics to worry about.

We have 11 & 1/2 at our current property. Had almost 18 at our last one. Ideally wed like 20+ but we can manage with what we have.🙃 Hubby and I just have different needs for the space we have and we dont like to share which is the main issue. LOL
