Becoming self sufficient is the goal of many offgridders and modern homesteaders. But, just how much room do you need? I've heard many things, but today I decided to sit down and answer just how much land you really need to get started.
Interesting in becoming more self sufficient? Check out my article "How to Escape the City and Move Off Grid," and sign up for the free "going off grid guide" (30+ page pdf) on the bottom of the page: offgridpermaculture.com/Beginners/How_to_Escape_the_City_and_Move_Off_Grid.html Thanks for watching!
i think doing individually is not a good idea but a collective community is better. because few families can join in and live in a collective community style setting.
20 acres off remote county road. 2,000 gal propane, multiple generators, two 50ft wells, comfortable stock pond, septic, own water rights, 15 acres is wooded with deer and hogs. Keep 60-ish chickens and a dozen goats, have agricultural exemption.
We got “5”.. county road runs through (didn’t mind, wanted a county road opposed to a private)., so basically 4.4. Of that, about 1.6 is wooded, .20 acre pond.. and the rest open space! Well once we get all of the over grow cleared!
I feel you’re underestimating the space needed for permaculture chicken and pigs. Not enough space will introduce disease problems, require medications and higher feed costs. That said, I enjoy your videos and useful information.
Completely agree. This guy has never seen the damage that chickens or pigs do to property when they aren’t given the space they really need. It’s just not realistic.
One factor when looking at size of property that affects taxing too, is if the county/taxing entity allows Agricultural exemptions, and minimum acreage to get the exemption. That can vary by county and what kind of exemption. In my county in Texas, general livestock/hay exemption is 10 acres outside of 1 acre homestead. But for beekeeping, it is only 5 acres other than the 1 acre homestead. Even with just 6 acres, you would be able to do all you want with small livestock, but the bees allow you to get the ag exemption and lower property taxes. Otherwise, no break on property taxes other than the 1 acre homestead exemption.
@Trap Town XYX thats what i do not get... in ideological vegetarianism.. if the egg is non fertile.. you get a lot of benefits from chicken in feilds because it adds fertiility.. but unfortunately many in india are ideologically driven... not to eat eggs... while drinking milk..
there are only about a dozen countries in the world where you don't pay property taxes but some countries have "regions" which are tax free, or very low tax. the province of newfoundland in canada (but not cities, just rural areas are exempt), fiji, cook islands, a couple Caribbean islands, some middle east countries etc.
A developed 3 1/4 acres (SW/USA) Has own well - elect= $25 month / takes yrs to pay for going totally solar!! Taxes $145 annually Wood cutting permit $20 for a cord.. I know of no place one can live much cheaper in USA / maybe on streets of LA/CA.. Off grid is a fad to a lot of people - however Most will Not like the dawn to dusk hard work to exist......
