I'm in my 50's and retiring from Crete. In the future, I really want to do an over the road/ all topic Podcast, with my nephew. He's a Shaffer driver and soon to be O/O (staying with CCC). Since we both share similar past careers in the military, and security/ law enforcement, we're always discussing day-to-day world/ trucker issues. One of them has been the ongoing observations of low quality seat warmers that other companies keep flooding into the industry. By "quality" I mean, fully trained, being lawful, respectful, accountable, having integrity and treating this career as a respected profession it once was and should be!

You'd love being a Walmart private fleet driver. We get paid hub miles, activity, quarterly safety bonus, employee stock purchase, 401k match, layover and get 25 days off in your first year. That's 5 weeks of paid time off paid at your ADP (average daily pay). I work 5/2 and am assigned a 24 Cascadia that's really well equipped. Our work is very easy too. It's actually pretty good over here. I'm easily going to make $110,000 in my first year.

The split loads and shag runs was one of the biggest reasons I quit Werner several years ago. I tried a few other companies but didn't work out for me. Wish I had found a company like Crete when I was able to drive. Sounds like a solid company dedicated to taking care of their biggest assets ( the driver). I hope you and Tonya continue to thrive at Crete and get to retirement age and enjoy your new Florida home. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

No holiday pay or layover pay. Detention kicks in 2 hrs after waiting to be loaded/unloaded. They put a forward and backward facing camera in your truck the first 60 days and every time you mess up they’ll put the camera back in your truck. There is a probation period when you first hire on. I’ve been here 3 weeks and that’s what they won’t tell you. So far. Can’t wait to what else is in store
@TheJoyofTrucking
@TheJoyofTrucking 4 месяца назад
Welcome to Crete! We hope what’s in store for you is positive experiences. The things you describe are pretty common in trucking. And this is a video specifically about miles and money. As for the cameras, that’s something they decide on for each driver individually, based on experience and driving record. We’ve met lots of new hires who had no cameras. Kevin also had the 60 days with cameras. We made a video about it. And, basically, if that was what he had to do in order to drive for them, so be it. It was worth it. The stability of this debt-free, family owned company with their own customer contracts is hard to find anywhere else. And we feel respected and Kevin is making good money. They have quarterly bonuses, paid vacation, profit sharing. It adds up. So we hope you have a good experience and reap the benefits that come with driving for Crete.

when i worked for crete the miles were nice when there were miles some weeks i could only get 1500 miles because of little freight in the areas they sent me... they did get me home on time no questions asked... but "Ben" out of wilmer called me one time to ask why i wasnt getting my miles but then in the same conversation also told me he could see my miles reflected the weeks that had low freight... so i had easily had 2500-3000 miles on good weeks and 1500 to 1800 on the low freight weeks

Yes…there have been some tough weeks over the last year and a half. That’s for sure. It’s so frustrating when you want to drive and can’t get the miles. Takes a lot of patience, communication, and being a squeaky wheel to get through that. But then with the really good weeks it usually balances out. Good that ‘Ben’ realized what was happening and that it wasn’t Jack of effort in your part!

Nope. Sorry wasn’t us. But I’m sure the other Crete driver appreciated the wave. 😄😉 We don’t get to pick our loads. So I guess officially you might call it ‘forced dispatch.’ But, we don’t feel ‘forced’ because Kevin will turn down a load if he thinks it’s unrealistic or wastes too much of his time. It’s very important to communicate with your asset manager. Kevin’s asset manager is very reasonable and will try to get Kevin something that works better if the load just doesn’t make sense. And there’s never pressure to drive if conditions aren’t safe. Shut it down and call in. We feel respected and treated with understanding.

Your away time can change drastically depending on if your otr or local, where you live in the country, if your on a dedicated acct, etc.. if your otr you can pretty much make your own schedule. For example I run otr & I usually start between 0300-0400 & end around 1600. Which usually means I work 5¹/2-6 days & then take my 34hr reset. I enjoy my day off each week, even if it's only at a truck stop.
@TheJoyofTrucking
@TheJoyofTrucking 7 месяцев назад
Hey there! Jimmy explained it well in the comment below. Kevin likes to start between 5 and 6am. He runs his clock out just about every day. That means 11 hours driving or 14 hours working. Whatever comes first. He works 70 hours in 6 days and then takes the 34 hour reset. He’s on the 48 states OTR account and stays out a minimum of 21 days to get the mileage pay he’s on. Different accounts vary the cpm. For every 6 days out he gets one day off. Though if he takes more no one asks or pressures him. He usually stays out 24 days and then takes 4 days off. But it varies. It’s good money in the end. But he works very long hours for it.

Crete has always had a good reputation. I remember about 20 years ago .. talking to Crete drivers back then. Always positive. THAT's a RARE and BIG DEAL in this industry. Crete's a good way to spend your time. My advice.. Keep looking for more challenges. For me, going into specialized equipment hauling changed my life. Oversize loads pay $3 to $5 per mile on the low end. It was scary at first. No docks, no appointments, no detention... you are the center of attention. $324,000 last year. That's over $200,000 in my pocket. And I'm home every weekend, usually more and take a few vacations thru the year. It exists. You can make serious bank trucking, but you have to be in the top 1% on skill and be analytically minded. FLIP FLOPS and Skinny Jeans need not apply.

I'm in good physical health. Is this something feasible to do, will I get hired or am I living in dream land? @TheJoyofTrucking
@TheJoyofTrucking 2 месяца назад
@@johnnyreno7200 Hi there! We don’t think you’re living in dreamland! We know lots of older drivers. If you live in the US there’s no age limit. Just have to pass the DOT physical. In Canada some provinces max out at 65, some at 70. Sorry you’ve had struggles in your life…hopefully this can turn it around for you! Though it’s not easy. But, having a driving career already you’re probably well versed in a lot of the challenges. We decided to pay for a one month CDL course at the Phoenix truck driving Institute and pay for it ourselves. In 2021 it cost us $4000. That way we were not beholden to any particular company. Kevin started with Werner and they actually reimbursed him over $200 a month towards his expense for getting his own CDL. If you go with the school attached to company, you will have to stay with them for two years or pay them back, and some of them are valued at eight to $10,000. So if you can, find a good inexpensive school near you and pay for it yourself. Community college courses would also be great. They usually cost less and you might actually learn more. But they do take longer. So you’ll need to research that for your area. We wish you all the best as you research your opportunities. Let us know how it goes!
