Many thoughts on this, it seems optimistic. Grooming from your home is a huge tax on your personal and family life. Hard to keep it clean as part of your home (my mom is a dog groomer). Ideally you want a small storefront for quality of life. But that’s going to eat into those numbers. 8 dogs a day with people coming to your home is going to be insane as you’d have as much traffic as a hair salon in your driveway. One model is to wash and then cut each dog, but you’re better off hiring washer(s) while you just do the grooming. But that’s a cost as well. Plus insurance, and chemicals and such are way more a year than $1000. As others have said the 8 dogs every day is an aggressive number too. Good 101 concept, but I’d argue you’re going to make closer to 50-60k per year working from your own home - and that taking its toll on your home. With a store front you probably need employees and be able to do 10-20 dogs a day for it to be profitable

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You are right, this is more for a basic understanding of how it works. I've seen several different business models and some have done very well with something similar to what I have but others that are way different. Skill and experience definitely play a factor. I appreciate the feedback to help others! - Tammy

That's a little deceiving. No groomer can do one dog an hour for 8 hours. You should have rounded it down to every 2 hours.

I understand that for most they may not be able to do this. I think the key is using the example of what is possible and adjust and tweak for each person's situation and skillset.

Great point. Since everyone's tax situation is different and it is paid off the profits I tend to mention but not deep dive on. I'll do a video help on this more. You are right, taxes kill most small business owners in their earlier years as they fail to set aside some of the profits to pay them. Plus those other pesky employee taxes and misc taxes. I'll keep this in mind as I explain more in the future.. - Tammy

@@BadassBusinessOwners Thank you! I really do wish we could make those kind of profits without the taxes. But either way, the way you presented it was still pretty informative. I'm about to venture into opening my own grooming business, and the thing that has me the most nervous are those taxes lol
@BadassBusinessOwners
@BadassBusinessOwners 2 года назад
@@mistyblackfoot3848 Here is the best rule of thumb to start with and adjust as you go. Take any money you pay yourself as a "doer" in the business and then any company profits at the end of the day. Then take about 20% to start with and put into a different account from your normal operational account. For example, mine is at a totally different bank so I'm not tempted. LOL - Then each month put the money in it. This way you don't see it, you don't spend it and you will have it. Then after you do your taxes you can adjust up if needed or if over, just let it build up as a back up emergency fund as well. The key is pay each month and keep it out of sight out of mind. :-) - Tammy

@@BadassBusinessOwners Hah you don't know me but you already know how hard that temptation is! Money burns a serious hole! Are you able to claim a lot in deductibles for tax returns to help mitigate the costs?

How much time it took t groom 8 dogs a day usually? 10+hours?

This video is purely a fantasy. I been grooming since 2007 and have my own grooming business. Not every client tips $10 and not every groomer grooms 8 dogs a day .. if they do,,,,, it’s a accident waiting to happen or qualify is in jeopardy.. So this is purely a FANTASY

I totally see why you feel the way you do. It is just an example so folks can plug in their own numbers. I’ve spoken to some folks who have done this but you are correct. Most prefer around 6 at most a day. - Tammy

@@geoffreyhansen284 Absolutely not. I think it is a great industry and it is only growing. Great opportunity for those that love pets. You just need to remember you are not a pet groomer but rather a business owner whose BUSINESS it is to groom pets. 🙂

I understand that this might not work for everyone but there are people out there doing it. Many from their garage at home or in a van. Yes, things need to line up and it takes time to build that client base. Will everyone be able to do it? No. But is it possible? Yes. - Tammy
