Thank you so much...I did the interview process from distance (Puerto Rico)...Even though I was a new graduate, I sold my resume: Residency HIV Clinic, Research, GPA and RN ICU/ER experience. I was offered $103,000 and I said: $109,000...I speak three languages and I would make a difference. I was finally offered $105,000.

Even low 100's is low... you're right, big factor is location. Nurse Practitioner here in Boston start at 140k. But again even that is negotiable, you can negotiate past 150k if you know your stuff.

Great video! Appreciate you dispelling the myths that an RN makes more or the same as an NP. If you are an NP and you make the same as you made when you were an RN then you are either a poor negotiator or sold yourself short or both. As an FNP in GEORGIA I make MORE than six figures BASE (that's not including bonuses and such) and that's in a state that traditionally pays less than others. I work 40hrs a week, M-F, 8-5pm and I get EVERY holiday off and 5 weeks PTO. There's not an RN in Georgia at ANY level that makes what I make. It annoys me to no end when I hear RNs say "I don't go to NP school cause I already make almost as much as an FNP does"....Pfft...uhm no you don't. When you hear nurse say they're making all this money they are working 36hrs + picking up extra shifts, PLUS working weekends with diff and nights to boot. Basically they are working their asses off just to come close to what I'm making while chillin for 40 hrs.
@rickjames7483
@rickjames7483 7 лет назад
Georgia is one of the highest paying states for NPs. NP pay depends on area and market. The Southeast (except Georgia) pays low, as NPs can not practice independently there. PMHNPs are paid higher salaries, because they are in demand. New grad RNs in some of the best hospitals in NYC start at 85-90k a year, while NPs in a lot of states start at the same salary (I've seen some even lower). One of the biggest reasons for low NP pay is that NPs don't know how to or are scared to negotiate. EDIT: Georgia is now a saturated state for NP's, Especially FNP's, so the starting salaries are much lower (especially in Atlanata). Too many NP programs and not enough jobs. Also, too many young NP's who never worked as RN's. The NP profession will go byway of the lawyer and accountant profession, where those who go to top schools will be the only ones finding good jobs.

Drop a number though just curious as to what a salary can look like. Most I’ve heard is $200k as a Crna but fnp $106k

@@JoseHernandez-oo7ul 106 k is about enty level in my opinion. Why anyone would go to NP school to make under 100k seems like a waste of time/money. ER NP's, and certain specialty areas can make around 200 easily. CRNA's can make much closer to 300k. That's my experience in the 5 years as an NP.

Joe I’m a new grad nurse and will eventually go after my NP. I also live in Georgia but I’m hearing from current co-workers that have their NP that what they are offered is the same as a traveler nurse entry level.

NP salary definitely depends on your specialty and where you are willing to go (e.g. underserved rural populations, trauma centers, etc). There's so many variables that affect salary, but ultimately I think the most important thing is pursuing the type of work that you want to do, with the population you want to serve, and not pursuing the salary. I currently work as an OR nurse at a trauma level 1 hospital, and can say there are ample opportunities to take call or work extra shifts (which sometimes come with incentive bonuses)... You can make around what an NP makes, but it usually means working ~60 hours a week. You have to take a step back and ask yourself if it's really worth it in terms of a healthy life-work balance. The only reason I work those extra hours is so I can save up some cash to help pay for my DNP program! Really looking forward to the day when I'm no longer working 60 hour weeks.

Oh what an awesome video. I have had coworkers tell me I was wasting my time pursuing advanced practice due to the salaries. But you are so right many RNs work a lot of overtime and have a second job because they live above their means or just love money till the point family and hobbies are no longer appreciated. My time is valuable. I enjoy smelling the roses not passing them by. Yes, salaries for NPs are steadily increasing and I am excited about it. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge and great advice. You are the bomb, Lada :-)

As RNs,most of my friends made $55k a year and now as an NPs, they make around 95k-105k so it’s definitely around a 50k raise so it’s crazy how some people make less.

A registered nurse that makes more than their NP job was probably killing themselves because floor nursing is tough physically and mentally. I'm a new NP and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world and like you my salary more than doubled not to mention it's a FQHC with a score of 22 & a sign on bonus with other great incentives. I'm no overtime girl either.

I’m lucky to be working at a hospital that provides incredible differential incentives. On top of the base salary they provide $6/hr ICU diff, $3/hr nights shift, $2/hr CCRN, $1.5 /hr weekends, x1.5/hr base salary for OT/Holidays and when they are really desperate they give out additional $15/hr additional on top of everything previously stated. Add this to my agency job where I work once a week, my W2 is always over $100k but the number of days I work per month is between 18-20 out of the 30 days. I almost don’t know what to do on my days off lol I once did 28 nights straight, day off, then another 16 nights when I needed to save money to renovate 2 bathrooms, the pool and the kitchen. Didn’t want to pull out a loan. Lucky for me I was still breathing after that stretch

The NP job requires great responsibility and education. We should not be ashamed of the fact that the NP should be compensated for the expertise the position requires.Thank you.

Hi, I'm so happy found this and subscribed, I start my FNP program at South University in Tampa, FL on Oct 5th. I am quit the opposite, I love to work overtime. I currently work Trauma/Neuro ICU and average 60 hours a week, work nights and they offer bonuses when you pick up extra shifts on top of time and a half. What your saying is absolutely correct, right now just as an ICU nurse working overtime , I make around 90-100k a year. But i'm also aware that I currently work hourly and that will change to salary. With that being said , for me increase in pay will heavily depend on LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. If you don't already know Florida is behind on everything including pay, in order for me to see increase in pay, I will have to relocate.

I am inspired by your blog, that I can across by accident, and I think it would be interesting to put together a complication of stories from nurses about their experiences in their first year. It would also be interesting to see guests on your blog who talk about specific topics in nursing and healthcare. (Meanwhile this is the first vlog I am watching so there may be more topics that incorporate guests). You have a fan though in Phx, AZ.

Being black matters.... why? I don’t comment that I’m from a single mom, never met my dad, been homeless white guy? Everyone lookin for a sympathy card. So much for white privilege right? Come on. Be the best you can be, regardless of color.
@DondalliaG
@DondalliaG 6 лет назад
Joshua Hilton he didn't say he was a black male for sympathy. In our community, nursing is still largely viewed as a "woman's job", or a "gay man's job". He said it for perspective... as a black man talking to a black woman in a field where black people are still fightingthrough certain boundaries and such. In other words, he wasn't talking to YOU, as YOUR experience or vantage point in this field would not be the same as HIS. Try to think outside of sympathy and woe next time someone mentions their race. They might just be speaking in terms of perspective, as it does matter for black men and women while choosing careers.
@destineerox1647
@destineerox1647 5 лет назад
Joshua Hilton he also said that because representation matters. He made note that he saw someone who looks like him making it in a society that has historically oppressed blacks. This is not to discredit other struggles as well. I’m not coming at you and honestly with all due respect but you’re the only one who seems to be concerned with playing the sympathy card.

Another point is also what you need to bring home. I think about the fact that I will bring home approximately 75% of salary after taxes. For example if my base pay is 85000, I am actually bringing home approximately 63,750 a year. So I think about what I want to bring home and I raise what I will ask for to get what I want to actually bring home. Example If I want to bring home near 85000, I will negotiate for approximately 113,500 - 120000 and negotiate from there. I have a high amount and a lower amount that I work from. Hope this make sense

Very informative video. Thank you. This is exactly what I came up against with salary. As a RN, I worked a normal "schedule"...I also like to have a life and did not believe sacrificing life for extra money was worth it. In my area, the NP salary range is 85-95,000 for new grads. Some nurses have said, "well that is stupid, I make that as an RN". Yes, but you work 6 days a week or 5 12 hour shifts or off shifts or whatever. I just graduated April 28th and will be taking my boards in june. I have decided that I am ok with that range for my first year or two as I get my footing as an NP, it is also a decent salary increase so we certainly will not suffer financially.

I looked into the federal loan repayments and it's not as clear cut as everyone makes it seem! I'm at a point where I have little kids at home and just need to do the bare minimum loan wise in order to be home as much as possible the next 3 years, once my girls are in school then i'll start working full time and look more into the loan repayment places since I'll feel better equipped to work a full time position without offsetting my child care cost so drastically. It's all a mess!

The situation for many NPs in some states (Arizona) is that they are salaries at 90,000 a year but expected to work 8a-5p M-F (44 hours a week) plus CALL plus CHARTING. The other issue here is that NPs very often aren’t given PTO, CME or even health insurance. Based on that, in Arizona, a LOT of RNs will make more as an RN per HOUR than they will as an NP.

@DrLada

Research, research, research! Be sure to focus on the career that will make you happy to go to work. At first, I was going to go to school for the CRNA but when I really thought about it working in family practice was more my cup of tea. I need interaction. I am obviously a social butterfly so putting people under every day would probably bore me. The next person may love it! It just depends on you. Good luck on making your decision. Let me know what you choose!

Negotiating skills are definitely my weak point! I have been fortunate to continually get raises since starting as a NP in 2007 but I did make the choice to do night shifts on the 7 on 7 off schedule which isn't as desirable! Thankful for a good career and can't wait to see what I'll be doing 5 years from now.

Good choice! I get emails from recruiters looking for psych NPs all the time...and let me just say Psych NPs make bank. Almost makes me want to go get a post graduate certificate for Psych NP lol, problem is I would enjoy it lol. Based on my experience in seeing all the different NP salaries I'd say that Psych NPs probably are second in salaries right after CRNAs.
@rickjames7483
@rickjames7483 7 лет назад
DithsHauteSpot Right now, Psych NPs (or PMHNP) are the second highest paid NPs, because the market is not saturated. But it is not for everyone! It also depends on what state you live in.

Thank you so much as well on your clear approach to educate those who are on their way to NP school or who already are practicing. I find that Glassdoor and LinkedIn also have some great information on salary by company and area. Here I'm San Francisco average pay is $155,849 and even that is negotiable.

I remember being an RN working 2 jobs where I live and still not making what I made my first year as a nurse practitioner. It is very possible for an RN make as much as most NP's if that person is willing to work an insane amount of overtime and float. Even that is becoming difficult to do these days because most facilities are having a hard time keeping the doors open, and the last thing employers are wanting to do is pay overtime. I say this bearing in mind that my state as a whole is mostly rural and underserved.

Can you discuss what a day in the life as an FNP is? Or do you have that video already? Do you work 5 days a week? How long are the shifts? And you're right! money is ALWAYS a factor! Your bills/loan do not care to hear about your passion. I'll never accept anything less than 100k as a starting rate when I do become an NP.

This was a good video. The fact is you should work smarter not harder if you have to make the salary you want based on overtime that might be counterproductive. Overtime and bonuses can come and go at any point and time and certainly hospitals are looking at ways to pay less money. Get your money up front and don't accept less than you think you deserve.

I practiced as an ED/ICU RN in Northeast. I had eight years of experience and worked three, 12 hour shifts per week. I made $81,500 in 2014. As an FNP, with one year of experience, I made 102,000 last year working full-time.

Do you need work experience as an rn first or could you go to np school right after graduating from rn school
@chocolatecookies786
@chocolatecookies786 5 лет назад
@@aacc2216 it depends on which school you pick. Some require a year of experience. While others don't have a specific time or any experience. But when you break it down, there's a gap between finishing nursing school, taking your NCLEX, actually starting working, applying to NP schools and starting that (because some schools only admit once a year). It's a few months of a process
