How Much Money Do You REALLY Need for a Caravan? 

Have you worked out your costs and if so what does it cost you?

Interesting video - my husband and I started watching you when we were in the process of buying our own van (which was taking way longer than expected!) - I think it is very important to consider all of the costs involved, and ultimately at the end of the day if it brings you enjoyment and as others have said, happy memories, it is worth it if you can afford it. We have only had ours for about five weeks now and have already enjoyed three lovey weekends away!

I see so many comments from individuals who state it’s a rip off, many who I doubt have never even owned one. A caravan is like a car, it loses money but it’s an investment in memories. A rough guide for us is pitch fees just over 3k, depreciation 2k a year, insurance around £100 a year. Gas and electric is cheaper than being at home. We used to pay over 5k for one long haul holiday a year and as such it’s terrific value in our view.

One thing worth mentioning. If you are on a site that allows you to rent out, and are not interested in the main 6 weeks, you can cover a big chunk of the fees. But the rest of the year they are hardly worth renting out.

If your retired and spending Spring Summer and Autumn or like you holidaying every weekend at your holiday home 5K a year is good value. These days just 2 weeks in a decent hotel in Spain costs the same. Thanks for what you do.

Well I owned a static caravan it was a 38x12 gas central heating, 12 years old when I sold it. It was in excellent condition when we sold it last year our site fees in Wales were £5200 a year with no amenities. The site owners only gave us £2500 for it the manager said that was the book price well so he said, anyway they are a complete waste of money some people on our site payed £20000 for decking that the site owners rip up when you sell the van. Or don't take that into consideration when you sell the van to them. They are bloody cold in most weather conditions so spend your money on something else as you will eventually lose almost everything you spent on it.

At Butlins we are Site fees £5,745, Water & Sewerage £595, Rates £304.

As of December 2022, site fees at Kiln Park in Tenby, Wales, were £9,000, up from £7,500. These fees do not include gas, electricity, water, or non-domestic rates. 😮

In NI we dont have separate rates thankfully. Pitch fees, gas and electric. Our insurance does seem to be much higher than yours though. North of £500. And where we are, pitch fees about £2100. Scary though how the price of same caravan can vary nationally too. I saw our exact caravan advertised on a site in England for literally double what we were charged brand new.

Recently a Lodge in the Lake District sold for around 1 Million.
