I have just a tinny and costs add up when like you say Fuel for boat,boat & trailer rego,insurance,bait,maintenance, boat drivers license,fishing license(I’m in Sydney),fuel for tow car etc.I spend just for a few hours out about $150 a trip and that’s just in a 4.2m tinny. Boats of any type are not “cheap” to own, use and maintain.The bigger they are the more it costs. Great video and lovely boat mate.

Loved the clip fordy, so true, I’ve been telling peeps for years how much it costs, run a 6m yellowfin for 14 yr now, 5th boat, as you worked my way upto, run evinrude 130, 160l fuel, dual battery set up, replace every 6 yr@ $600 a piece, trailer up keep, rods reels bait, food/ drinks for 12-36 hr on the water, oil for evinrude was 60$ a gallon 14 yr ago now 95$ for 3itre, fuel for cruiser towing, launching fees, spend spend spend , boat wash on way home, insurance, life jackets, easy 600$-800$ per trip and only 50% catch fish to trip ratio, people wonder y I don’t just take out for a 2 hr session🤣🤣🤣, they don’t understand it’s good you put it all on the table so all understand that it’s a great thing to own but it cost f.load to run and upkeep, tight lines bud🤙

Thank You, for a really great honest video. Trying to line up family gets more challenging as the children get older and more involved with sports and their interests which are often outside fishing and boating. As we get older and smarter? Weather conditions play a bigger part in our decisions as we enjoy the comfort of smooth seas, so that may halve the possible times to put to sea. Then factor in other commitments and the fishing window gets smaller and smaller. I liked the battery setup you described as there could not be a worse feeling than turning the key and nothing. Thanks again for your straight-from-the-shoulder video.

100% the amount that we really use them it’s lot more cost and my last trip home took me 5 hrs cause it blew up can still do much same speed when it’s rough and if you tap them out they all drink heaps fuel probably worth putting a new engine on sometimes then upgrade on entire boat and some new electronics ect new upholstery ect can make big improvements on comfy trip

I had an old 22 foot swift swiftcraft that I fixed up with my old man, with a 115hp yammy. Motor was way under sized with that hull, but I used it heaps to learn the ropes on the water. I upgraded to a 19 foot tournament bluewater with a suzi 150hp. Bloody best thing I did. I keep lusting over the 233 formulas but after actually pulling up next to one on the water I changed my mind. Sure a way better boat, but the money to upgrade isn't worth it for me.
@marcianmoon6143

quick formula is you need to budget yearly expenses of about min 10% of the boat purchase total price if its on the trailer with min-med usage and 20% if its moored or high usage

Mate this vid gave me a reality check, ive always dreamed of owning a boat of this class/size (currently own a 5m quinnie) but man the running costs etc especially on fuel that's nuts. I will have to lower my standards now to something under 6m so I can keep using the same tow vehicle. Anyways great video.

Lovely explained Ep on a awesome set up boat Mr Fordo, I here you as I have owned a few boats starting with a 5m half cabin FG boat then a 6m cutty cab plate alloy Star with twin 90s 2/s, then a 8,8m full cab chugger with 250hp diesel shaft drive, then a 7,7m FG over ply full cab boat with twins, I pro lined fished out of the last two boats for nearly 20 years strait, we sold my last bigger boat even thought we owned it and our house and land and everything, but we could not afford to run it unless pro fishing, I am just rec fisherman now with a 5m quintrex king with a F60 2005 on the back of it, I been heading north for holidays for 42 years now. I go up to the Cape or the Gulf or NT Gulf or top of WA again one day, but mainly north of Weipa we will have 8 weeks there this year.

Liked your post on owning a bigger boat. However you forgot to include for everyone the loss of income gererated on the 160k, say at 5% is 8k per year. The depreciation of the boat over say 10 years may be 50 to 80k (5 to 8k per year) and of course that money is discounted by inflation between 3 to 8% depending on how well the govt manages the economy. A nice boat is lovely to have however the real cost are substancial, guess that is why the say owning one is like pouring money down a hole. I do have an older 30yr 7.3 m tub, Re powered it recently, ouch, but gets us on the water. Cheers Tom.

We budget 20k per year for penning it insurance, maintenance, fuel and all the other associated stuff. It’s expensive but it’s worth it.

100% correct the quintrex boats ride extremely well I gained about 10kph faster in comparison weather with the Haines and definitely quieter ride with Haines but with the extra speed comes more spray getting punched out the side and in shitty weather becomes more spray on the boat as well if you push it they still flog shame as ally boat

I like the video mate but you lost me a bit with the ice, bait, food, drink and even fuel. You're buying all that with any size day boat. 300km trips are huge trips and everyone understands the further you go the more it costs. What i did like was the how you touched on max people on board. People would assume bigger boat more room for more people but obviously not the case. Points people would be interested in would be the costs of a trailer maintenance with hydraulic brakes, costs of servicing twin outboards. Cabin facilities (toilet/showers/food prep areas) can you launch retrieve on your own, boat ramp jetty manoeuvrability. Storage advantages. The benefits might outweigh the costs. You've got this size now, would you ever go back to a 6m? What do you gain vs what do you lose. Love another more detailed vid as im in the process of stepping up from a 6m to a 7m
@thumburnfishing
@thumburnfishing 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the reply and yes since stepping up to a bigger boat it’s definitely more of a hassle to load up and manoeuvre even the wind moves easily because of the bigger surface area the ride quality is good but been in 6 m boats that also ride good Thanks for watching and I might take you suggestions onboard for future videos
@Aust1la

@@thumburnfishing Thank you for your genuine honest videos! I just would love more of the details and debunk some theories, like I mentioned. If you felt cramped on a 6m boat with 4 adults then a 7m boat isn't going to magically solve that problem, so you spend all that money and have the same issue, but if you need an enclosed toilet or beds for 6 then a 7m would be worth it. Anyway I'm happy I discovered your channel! Thanks

Design your trailer with gimbal rollers in such a way as to launch and retrieve with minimal wetting with an electric winch. Go for steel RHS fully sealed box sections pressure tested and galvanised, then fill with argon. It can be done. My trailer is forty years old, only painted (touched up now an then), no rust, and carries a heavy glass hardtop with a diesel sterndrive. Last year was the first time I replaced the original wheel bearings. Winch time seventeen seconds, quicker than to drive on or off. Just tie off and park your vehicle, simple as, cheers.
