i’m loving ben’s character development throughout these episodes, from refusing to dance to the intro music, to changing the holo everyone intro, to creating a new one every episode
To be fair, lots of people don’t like when RU-vids earn a lot of money, even though there should be nothing wrong with that. I think that is why most youtubers don’t talk about their earnings
@@therealJamieJoy Oh I don't anymore, it was just so annoying knowing that he was crying to children that he couldn't feed his kids while we all knew damn well he has so much money. Both him and his ex wife! Its insulting to people that are actually struggling. Like....omg....how am I going to feed my kids if my videos get demonitized!? Can all of you ask all your parents to buy my merchandise so I can feed my poor starving children!? Next video...."spent 10k on my kids Christmas gifts!" Like fuck you dude.....the kids parents who are buying your shitty merch are probably living paycheck to paycheck and you're out here acting like a jackass.
@@kimismith18 wow, yeah, I totally see what you mean. That would upset me, as well. Especially over the past year when people are struggling as bad as -- in some cases -- The Great Depression in America. Another issue I see with people who become wealthy quickly is a lack of understanding how to manage their money. They blow it then they can't pay taxes and upkeep on their properties. Then they are stuck "looking rich" but are cash poor. Basically, people suck! LOL
I like the vibe of this episode. There's no shame in being rich, and Cristine and Ben would never rub it in people's faces - it's not bragging to be open about your income. Of course nobody owes anyone an explanation about how much they make, but you also don't have to downplay your achievements. It's no secret that big influencers make millions... You don't have to pretend that you're still part of the poor people gang as some youtubers *cough cough cough* like to do.
right? people have the right to be casually rich lol. but multi billionaire? maybe thats a bit too much wealth sitting in once place lol. id say they should be required to donate/spent/etc X amount of money after you have some threshold. but then again, thats easy to say when im worth < 200kUSD. maybe if _I_ had 10B USD, I'd think differently lol
@@pvic6959 I mean Jeff Bezos could save millions of people a year from food poverty with no harm to himself and he doesn't. He's an objectively bad person.
@@pvic6959 i mean you’re right tho, spending money is the best way to stimulate the economy and create jobs and stuff. That’s why hoarding money is kinda harmful
I was washing dishes while listening so I ended up listening to the whole ad (for Lumi, so at least it is entertaining) while I shook my head at the irony of the placement! 🤣
I love when Cristine says that people should think of their back log as an investment. When I find a new channel, I will spend as many days as it takes binging their content. I don't care how old it is, if I like the creator, I just can't get enough!
"we didn't name it after Beyn because if the average person was shopping on Holo Taco it would make literally no sense." Average person: "wtf is a banana hack??" 😂😂
I was thinking, "average people shop on Holo Taco??" - I thought it literally was fans mostly. If/when I see someone wearing holo taco, I know they're from the simply community and it makes me happy.
I absolutely love when Cristine swatches her polish, but would it be possible to have like 4 swatches of the same polish on different skin tones? Like fair, light, tan, & deep? Love you guys!
I think she has said on the Holo Taco official sites/channels that they are working on this! A Black woman has done swatching on the Holo Taco Instagram before.
She has definitely talked about wanting to do it! Hopefully she'll be able to soon! I have seen some swatches on different skin tones on the holo taco instagram you just might need to scroll some since it's mostly Cristine's nails. I'm wondering if the pandemic has postponed doing this since Cristine is specific with what she wants and couldn't do photoshoots with other people. Hopefully for upcoming collections!
What time do we think this video is going to hit the trending page and go viral? It's 11:50am est for me so I'm going with 2:30pm landing on trending page and 8pm for it going viral.
@@fzzypurpleturtle I don’t believe it is, they don’t work overtime for their day job I don’t think. Also keep in mind they probably stated their salary in Canadian dollars so it sounds like more than it is to Americans. 60k actually sounds low to me for a government job that requires a masters degree (although that could be because I’m comparing to my friends who are closer to the end of their career).
@@LifeAsItIs478752 Yes you're right. I used to work for DOJ here in BC and I made $65k a year as a legal assistant and we didn't get overtime. If you wanted to be compensated for overtime you had to file it before you worked it which is hard when you don't know when you'll be staying longer 😅
@@notakebaks ya I mean I definitely know Canadian govt jobs with salaries around 45k CAD (roughly equivalent of 36k USD) such as records check or customer services reps at Service Canada that would only require a bachelor. Although I think that’s for closer to the beginning of the career.
I think you guys are the first youtubers I've come across who weren't vague about this entire concept of earning money through youtube. Thankyou father Ben.
Please please please make some high quality reds!!! Like bright red, muted reds, dark red, maroon, or even ox blood red!!!! Omg I would buy all of them
i dont wear nail polish, i dont watch nail polish videos, yet ive been binging every single podcast just because of how endearing, entertaining, and straight up you two are.
Fun fact, english isn't my first language and for a long time I thought 'demonetized' came from the word 'demon', i.e. the content was bad/evil. Didn't realize until I heard the word 'monetized' much later.
I so rarely hear women talk about making money and so I feel like this is really important - Thank you! (Also I love your videos and Holo Taco polish!)
Ooh the demonitisation hitting educational content is the worst. A lot of things which cover LGBTQ+ topics, medical content etc. are being demonitised 'by accident' 🙄
"What happens if we skip the ad after 5 seconds?" -ad immediately plays Me: Skips ad after 5 seconds. May or may have not have made more money for Cristine
HAHA Same ad placement for everyone probably based on it happened to me and Cristine mentioned and has showed placing where the ads are, however it made me watch my first ads (luckily just 2 short ones) in years... Once they said the answer I proceeded to skipping the rest of the ads :D lol
Great point, Cristine. I've seen a particular RU-vidr claim they need money to "fund their passion" and started a Patreon, yet they live in a $2.5 MILLION house. That said, they're entitled to do what they please, as are their audience with their money. My point is, the average person can't afford to buy a multimillion dollar house, but they're the ones being asked [and guilt tripped] to give money to this person who can afford to do so. It just doesn't seem right, imo.
but does person where once AN AVERAGE PERSON. youtuber just find a way to earn money and get rich fast. Is sad that normal jobs that you only get if you have a PhD get leeesssssss money but that is just how the system is right now.
@@zairabandy8695 Not sure I understand what you said in the first sentence, but I agree with the second part; it does seem unfair that PhDs who went to 12 years of college earn less than a lot of larger influencers that never went even one day.
There is a channel who said, "well, we started a Patreon because youtube is not feasible anymore if we don't and we can't produce any videos anymore without the extra income" at a point where that channel was a few years old and had several million subscribers and more than 100k views per video, on every video (usually a LOT more, I looked at the last months and none of them is lower than 250k), and that almost felt like blackmail? It wasn't like "we want to supplement to be less dependent on AdSense", they at least heavily implied that without Patreon their channel would die. Hearing that Cristine made more than what she made in her day job, that's ... I mean, 60k a year is 5k a month, that's before taxes, quick google search tells me that Canadians in that income bracket pay 20% income tax, that means that with an equivalent of 4+k a month, this youtube creator said "I can't afford to make videos if I don't get the extra from Patreon" I mean, yeah, it's CAD, so it's more like 48k USD, that's still like 3k a month after taxes ... that's not a small income. Like, 3k USD is something a lot of people in the US dream of.
The "well what if your boss cut your revenue in half" argument blows my mind when its from youtubers making a ton of money (which is who I've personally heard say it). Yours is cut in half and you still make more in a month than most do in a year. Cut mine in half and I am now at the poverty line. I understand that losing money sucks and its sketch how youtube does it alot of the time but can they just not make that argument specifically to their audience.
To answer Cristine doubts on what it takes to reach 4000 hours of watch time...I started uploadimg videos 7 months ago, I have less than 60 subs and 100 hours of watch time...it's a good thing I plan on working as a sociology teacher and not as a full time youtuber lol
I think its the subs that is harder to get, the watch hours you can get lucky and put up a viral video. I think i was just lucky for posting random videos so i have no idea.
I've made occasional videos for the past year and I'm at almost 300 hours of watch time. That's mostly thanks to two videos that got surprisingly popular and make up 84% of my total views, lol. The average person apparently clicks away from my videos after two to three minutes. Focusing on the statistics can be depressing; I try not to look at the analytics too much. It would be awesome if I eventually made money from this or got PR or whatever, but making videos for the fun of it is the only way to stay sane. I beat myself up over enough things without adding low view counts and low retention to that list. :P
@@isolatedcolor509 i totally understand! Literally one of my videos holds a third of all views on my channel lol you are definitely right, we shouldn't stress about analytics because analytics aren't a goal here...a goal is to have fun while filming videos, to have a creative outlet and to meet new people! P.S. I don't know if this comment section is making my sub count blow up or not, but I am super happy about it, so thank you for your support!
This was a great podcast, Cristine and Ben! Not that all your podcasts aren't thought-provoking and informative, but since a lot of people are fascinated by a RU-vidr's career and income, this gave us a much-anticipated glimpse into those from someone on the inside.
This podcast is a lifesaver. I haven't been able to stop focusing on the shooting that just occurred in my state, especially since victim names were just released. One nice thing to have on a really, really sad day.
I understand how you feel, a shooting that made national news happened in my city a few years ago. It doesn't feel real and everyone is so confused and angry. Hang in there, its amazing how communities come together to support each other and the victims families.
Cris: "We're making more cremes" Me: "I hope that means we're going a good neutral creme base for French tips!" Cris: "I don't want to be just the average shade in the drug store" Me: -single tear-
Cristine, I’m someone who rarely paints their nails, but seeing how saturated and lovely the HoloTaco royal blue and yellow is, I’m so very tempted for the first time in my life.
There is so much bragging/flexing out there on RU-vid that a grounded discussion of how this works (and how different it is for small vs large channels) is interesting and valuable. Thanks!
Normally when I’m sad or need a laugh I will go on simply not logical. Even if they are old, it’s nice to laugh and remember those times. I do the same with the main channel sometimes as well.
Cristine- I didn't name the yellow polish Ben-nana because it is an inside simplynailogical joke. Also Cristine- So I named it Banana hacks which is also an inside simplynailogical joke.... Me- ???
Dude, I'm glad you got this first question because I wonder that same thing all the time. Sometimes I *want* to help by watching ads but sometimes they're like 4+ min long. ugh. i can't do that sometimes! Sometimes i can put it down and walk away, but sometimes I just can't
All I could think of was Colleen Ballinger. She complains about this constantly (if something gets demonetized, how she lost her revenue from other ventures), but posts every day and makes so much money. I cannot have sympathy or support creators that do this and this podcast totally solidified my feelings.
I never realized she did this. Shane Dawson (stopped watching long ago) and a few ASMRists I watch have complained about low revenue or “being poor.” Talk about ridiculous. With all of these people, their money has bought them financial freedom, beautiful homes, and so much more. Like Colleen moving to New York for a month to take a job on Broadway. Yeah, Colleen and all these other complainers are definitely NOT hard for cash. It’s annoying to hear, especially now given everything.
I didn’t realize I was one of the original 200,000.... I discovered you channel when I graduated high school in 2015.... ive watched every video since then and it’s just crazy to see how much you’ve grown! So I’ve always been part of the old people group I guess! 18 back then and 24 now!
Would love to see more swatches with different skin tones on the Holo Taco website! Other brands do this and as someone with darker skin, it’s so helpful to determine if that shade is going to look good on me. It may seem small, but making sure POC are thought about and included means a lot to us.
Cristine has said that's down the pipe, right now it is only her hands because it's easier, but she knows it's important to have more skintones and is working on it.
About the subscription service, i think more large channels should follow what pewdiepie did. He uses the money earned there to donate to charities. I think he's donated nearly a million (100k -150k monthly and each to different charities)
Shoutout to Shane Dawson gaslighting me and his other fans about how he's 'poor' and needs financial support from his fans...my educated parents wages together for their entire life is less than what Shane used to make per video
Watching a video on how AdSense works, then getting an ad for "how to get a million RU-vid subscribers without ever actually making videos" is... Wild. Does Google even screen the ads they're running?? Though I love that there's a "get rich quick" category in the AdSense settings that you could potentially disallow 🤣 This had been very enlightening, even just 18 minutes in! ❤️
I am very intrigued and curious. WHen I saw the post on the community tab asking questions for this, I was like "Wait, they wanna talk about this?" I was very shocked hehe
How to grow your nails is how I found your channel after clicking through a bunch of useless videos on the topic, then I watched all your content. I was just trying to not have extra short bitten nails and had never really heard of nail art. That was an adventure, feels nostalgic cuz it was like 3 years ago.
sometimes ads are so f-ed up. I looked at a video about binge eating disorder earlier today and have been fLoDeD with Dominos ads on every video I clicked on afterwards. thanks exactly what I need when I'm struggling with the urge to binge eat. I know this has nothing to do with the videos but I just wanted to give an example of the ad algorithm being morally questionable.
You can go into your watch history and delete whatever you don't want in your "cache", so RU-vid doesn't track your activity on the video... At least this works for recommended videos, I'm not 100% sure if it applies for ads too.
As a nail tech I just have to say that Green Screen Green is super exciting! I have literally been in pro nail supply stores the size of giant warehouses with walls upon walls of polish looking for a true green creme polish only to come out empty handed! The only one I've ever found is an Orly one and I don't like the formula of it. Now I just wish I could find a true green gel creme polish.... ugh, I want DND to come out with a perfect green gel+polish duo, their formulas are the bomb!
Thank you for exposing the myth of 'not allowed to share how much they make' as soon as Ben relayed that, I literally said "OOOOH TEAAA!" out loud. Got a strange look from the person that was somewhat near me. LOL
I don't know if Ben will ever be able to forgive Cristine for calling the banana yellow cream polish "Banana Hacks" instead of it's real name: "Beyyyynana Yellow" 🍌🍌🍌🍌💔 The regular consumer can STFU 😂😂😂
Cristine made more on youtube than her day job at around 200k subs. The podcast channel has over twice that and REALLY long view times at around an hour each podcast per viewer. The mind boggles. Thank you guys for your transparency and honesty. As a long time youtube viewer I've always wondered about this kind of information (especially the 1st about skipping ads) and could never really find it. Y'all are awesome!
Hey everyone, hope you’re all doing okay! Remember to take some time for yourself and do at least one thing that makes you happy today. Take some time to go outside (as long as it is safe to do so) even if it’s just sitting outside for 5 mins or a short walk. Get yourself a snack if you haven’t had one yet, and drink some water. Make sure to look after yourself today :) Have a good day everyone, and remember that everything is going to be okay!
I can help a little with the question at 10:58. I started my channel a little over 7 months ago, and have ~1700 subs, and ~50k views in that time, but only just 3000 hours watched. I am hoping to hit 4000 hours in the next month or so 🙂
Demonitization can especially be frustrating for many non-white, LGBTQ+ creators. Even though their content can be considered "light," it definitely seems as if their very existence is already considered a """serious""" topic. I guess this is why a lot of such creators resort to having Patreons to ensure some kind of income from content creation.
Did you just call me a "homosimpian" excuse me but I identify as a heterosimpian, why are the gays forcing themselves on us? /S I'm totally gay chjdjdjsk
