First of all- I am grateful for all the photography teachers on RU-vid- !!!! Second- your work is beautiful. I am an amateur and love taking pictures for the last 30 years, alas, I never learned manual settings- so I’m starting over- and I’ve got crazy ideas! And I’m going into with a passion to study, practice, learn, and improve. Your my most inspiring teacher yet!!!

Great video! Im curious, how were you able to market your prints and personal projects? You mentioned galleries, photobooks, etc, how were you able to get a gallery to hold your exhibition, find people to buy your prints and photobooks, etc. Was it mostly stuff like tiktok or did you have other means?
@BryanBrock_
@BryanBrock_ Год назад
Great questions! I use Instagram to promote and market most of my stuff. I have a relatively small audience, but they love to support. In terms of galleries, there’s usually only two options for someone at my level (not known in the art world). Option 1 - rent a gallery space and host your own event. Option 2 - Gallery takes a commission on all print sales. As for photo books, I collaborated with a photographer in NYC and that exposed me to a whole new group of people. Long story short, build a community who genuinely supports you and your work (easier said than done). ✌️

Cool video. How do you handle release forms? Larger groups or gatherings might be okay under editorial laws. Granted this is different depending on what country you live in.
@BryanBrock_

Would definitely need such releases in Japan if you want avoid dealing legal trouble. I try to avoid recognizable shots of persons for this reason if I might sell the shot. I am sure tourists can get away with taking candid shots since it might be more difficult to send a cease and desist letter to someone who has gone back overseas. That said, I have sent such letters to overseas bloggers, and website developers for using my images without a license.

Hey Filip! Freelance is one of those tricky things no matter what industry you're in. What's worked for me is a balance of both reaching out to people (in person, emails or DM's) and people reaching out to me. One thing that seems to gain attention (which inevitably leads to work) is when I produce my own projects and invest in myself. You never know who's watching! Last thing I can add is that the larger your network the easier it is to get a referral, or know somebody that knows somebody who's looking for a creative to hire. Hope that helps dude! Peace.

@@BryanBrock_ Yeaah, I thought so. The thing I'm missing out on the most is the freakin network as I moved to quite a remote location couple years ago and it definitely does me good in many ways but people I miss the most, talking about the same interests, visiting exhibition, even parties..Time for change I guess. PS: Thanks for your answer Bryan.

Hello, thank you for the video, it gives hope! I am doing street photography as well and I post them on instagram, but I don't get any offer. I suspect that instagram is not the best place to post them, any advice on that? I am wondering if I should create my own website...

Instagram is definitely not the best. I don’t know what is, but having a personal website and online shop is always a good look. The majority of my sales come from my website. Hope that helps! Good luck

Do you need release forms for those photos? Just curious for my own work.

No need for release forms in public, but it does depend on what city and country you’re in. I believe there are different rules around the world.

I don't use a flash very often with my Q2, but when I do it's the super small FujiFilm EF-X20.

I'm actually making a video (part 2) of how to make a personal photography project and I'll be breaking down all the different ways I promoted my photo book. Stay tuned...

Is it legal to sell photos with people in it without their release forms?
@BryanBrock_
@BryanBrock_ Месяц назад
You have to see if street photography is legal in your country/city. If it's legal, than there should be no issues with selling the images. Always good to double check!

Is this something that someone without an established community base can do?
@BryanBrock_
@BryanBrock_ Год назад
Great question. It may be hard to sell a product without an established audience, but all it takes is that one person who's interested in your work and you're on your way. Slowly but surely as they say.
