I want to talk about the guys in the thumbnail of this video, myself included. One of the first things you’ll notice is that we’re very lean and shredded.
This is different than muscle growth, this is more about displaying the muscle you have, and I can say that I am a good example of how lean you can get naturally over 50, but if your goal is to build muscle, then you don’t want to be this lean.
Okay, I gotta talk about Mike O’Hearn. He’s 54 years old, claims he’s natural and has been drug tested a lot; never failed a test, but his fat-free mass index is around 27, which is a full 2 points over what’s considered naturally possible for the genetically gifted, making him a poor example of what the average guy over 50 can achieve.
But something that’s a good indicator of how much muscle you can naturally add is health. Maximizing our health reduces the amount of age-related decline we experience, allowing us to build muscle like a much younger man.

Before we leave the topic of health, we should talk about testosterone; it’s a primary hormonal driver of muscle growth, and statistically, it goes down as we age. But research is discovering that it’s more connected to health and body composition than age. Again I’ll leave a link in the top comment to a video that explains this.
Next, we’ll talk about genetics, including muscle and bone structure. Philip Ricardo Jr is the guy in the thumbnail I haven’t talked about a natural Masters Olympia champion.
To compete in the natural Olympia, you must be drug tested and agree to be randomly tested throughout the year to the World anti-doping agency standards.
He’s 5’ 9”, and his competition weight is between 175 and 180 lbs., which for a natural, is a big guy. It’s commonly thought African Americans can build muscle better than Caucasians. But is this true?
I found a few studies indicating they naturally have more muscle mass, with one study stating it was about 5% more than us white guys.
I could only find one study related to muscle growth, and it found no difference between the races' ability to build muscle
It could be broken down even further; for example, there is an exceptional amount of strong men that come from Iceland and they have a reputation for being big and strong.
Muscle insertions affect how big individual muscles can grow. If you have high calves, it will be much harder to build that muscle.
With biceps, when you flex your arm, the less distance between your forearm and where the bicep peak starts, the better your genetics for building big biceps.
This can happen with any muscle. Our lats can have high or low insertions, those with low lat insertions are able to build bigger and fuller backs. The good news is just because we have one area that doesn’t have good insertions doesn’t mean our whole body is that way.
The larger your skeleton, the more muscle you can build.
Casey Butt has done the most research on this and has developed a calculator using our wrist and ankle measurements to help us determine our natural potential.
Menno Henselman has a version of the calculator, and I like it the best.
I am currently about 13% body fat.
my desired fat percentage, 10%. height is 5’9”, I weigh 161.
My wrist circumference is 7,” and my ankle circumference is 8.25.”
my natural maximum weight would be 183.8 lbs at 10% body fat. I see 165 to 170 lbs at 10% body fat as a more realistic goal, bringing my fat-free mass index in between 22 and 23

I’m 53 and I can say with experience that it’s not about HOW MUCH muscle you can build… it’s about having a good balance of muscle. Too much of anything is not a good thing because it distracts from balance. Speaking of which.. as your age.. it’s more about having balance, cardio fitness, flexibility, and full range of motion mobility. Motion is lotion and ageing is a sitting disease. Focussing on just muscle development is a myopic focus on vanity and will lead to results less satisfying than the feel good you get from a diversified exercise approach

Some degree of resistance training is vital for health and longevity, but you don’t have to take it to the extreme. We want to protect the muscle we have to keep us from becoming weak and feeble in the future.

51 and working out on and off since 17. Never been stronger. Always been muscular and have even been asked if I have taken roids. Not sure how accurate inbody records are but reviewing the last 4 years of lifting have put on 4 pounds of muscle. Challenge now is to reduce body fat and maintain muscle.

Same 50 here training since 15 and basically an ecto when started at 140 now 225....Last month i have gotten 5 to 6 clean meals a day and training heavy and hard and still put on tiny amounts...rear delt grew...bicep...maybe tricep...bench up also.....I think one important thing left out of this video is the mental belief that you will and can still put on muscle and put alot of direct intention to doing that.....and to saying the hell with genes this that and the other....I will it to occur!Of course there there is a limit to anything and expecting to put on 20 pounds of muscle in a year isn;t likely going to occur.

Mike Thurston is about as natural as Lance Armstrong, and although Lance actually passed many legitimate drug tests even he infamously returned positive results on a few occasions.

Thanks for mentioning muscle insertions. I have never really been into visualization and goals. That's just me!Some muscle groups have far exceeded my imagination, and some look like I don't even lift. My body is proportionate "enough." So, I would rather do more cardio than arm work. Take care 🙂

I'm 55, and have always been fairly fit, but have been diligently hitting the gym for a little over a year and seen some good results. But my results have tended to be in the form of toning up the muscle I have rather than building much new muscle. I've lost weight, which I assume is fat loss, but a combination of old injuries to knee and shoulder limit my ability to increase weight without them flaring up.

Working around injuries is always a challenge. I have a bad shoulder, too. It hasn’t bothered me for a while. I started hanging from a bar daily, which helped clear it up.

In my mid sixties and still find it doesn't take all that much work to look passably fit in a tee shirt. Mostly about keeping off the flab for me. Love handles have always been an issue....I gave up long ago in that department.

I’m not, nor have I ever been on TRT. For most guys, as long as your testosterone levels are in the normal range, even low normal, you can get into great shape, and as you get into shape and lose excess body fat, your T levels will go up.

I hate having a small bone structure. I was always chubby with thin noodle arms, and small wrist. 1 1/2 years into weight lifting I’m finally happy with my upper body after slimming down, but having small wrist and just a slime build, compared to friends who are slim with wrist twice my size is depressing 😅 I sure hope I can build twice the amount of muscle I do now with small bones

Nice to hear about your progress, I’m not the biggest guy either, but I have a lot of fun working to improve my weak points and found that improving your aesthetics and muscle balance often has a bigger impact than size alone.

Yeah but you will have more of an aesthetic body than them when you do put on decent muscle.I also have tiny wrists and was ecto and through 35 years put on i'd say 50 pounds of lean muscle...

Learned some new things. Having achievable goals is part of the smart acronym. Note about steroid abuse honesty: Lance Armstrong was the most tested athlete in the world for seven years! Yeah? If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't? Follow the money. If someone is gaining monetarily from lying, they probably are. "take your vitamins kids!"

To get to the goal weights you mention, 165 to 170 at 10% body fat would require you adding about 10 pounds of muscle. I this that it quite an ambitious goal to achieve in your late 50s

I’m 57 next month just started working out about a year ago and was wondering if it’s possible to build muscle if you are taking testosterone injections because of low testosterone levels?

I don’t know, but I’ll say.. if the testosterone levels are raised to a natural level, you’ll build muscle at a natural pace. Guys who do trt usually get their test levels much higher than average to grow more

I would think you should be able to build muscle fine on TRT. I’m often told I must be on TRT to be able to build the physique I currently have. But TRT won’t make you muscular without consistent, hard and progressive training. You need to train that way, whether you are natural or not, to build muscle.

So, a study from 1997 showed that a control group given 600mg of testosterone who did not workout, achieved the same and also better muscle growth than a group who were given a placebo and worked out. Testosterone is a powerful hormone responsible for muscle growth and fat regulation. Now, TRT is a very low dose (around 40mg) of testosterone given to guys like me whose testosterone dropped through the floor. My testosterone levels are now average for a 53 year old guy. So I doubt that my TRT is building muscle above average for my age but I will be doing better than before I went on TRT, if that makes sense?

I think you look like 13% could be pretty accurate. But it's really hard to guess just from pictures.

True, one pic isn’t much to go by, but I think most people estimate their body fat by looking in the mirror and comparing themselves to photos of others. I use callipers and bioelectric impedance too. If I had access to a DEXA scan, I’d use it.

When we say “natural”, does that also mean no use of TRT? I’m curious to know what a 50+ year-old can expect to achieve without the aid of TRT - just impeccable dieting and exercise.

TRT is not a PED. 40mg of Test a day is not going to build mass amounts of muscle. It merely restores hormones to a normal level for your age. Any additional test will stop hormone production from the pituitary gland to the testes. This has happened to me. I'm on 40mg of TRT a day. My testosterone levels were so low they were below the scale. Now they are average. PEDs would be a dosage of 600 plus of Test or above 60mg of Anavar plus something else.

Weighing 161 at 13% body fat is a lean body mass of 140 pounds. Weighing 184 pounds at 10% body fat would be a lean body mass of 165. You would need to add 25 pounds of muscle to get there. That's A LOT of muscle to gain.

I just put my numbers in and came up with a lean body mass of 165 pounds at a current weight of 203 pounds with a max additional muscle gain of 10 pounds. Personally my goal is 5 more pounds of muscle and lose about 10 pounds of fat over the next couple of years. I'm turning 50 and have been working out for about a year and a half. I worked out 30 years ago but nothing since then.

I don't see myself gaining that kind of muscle, especially in just over 2 years. 5 lbs of new muscle a year is lots. For someone who has been lifting for a while a couple of pounds a year could be all that they can do.

Im not an older gentlemen, im 17 and since i don't have gyn access i was wondering if you think i can use gallon jugs filled with sand as weight. I have a broom handle so i could use a resistance band to tie them to the stick.

Any form of resistance will work, including body weight. A couple of the best exercises you can do is push-ups and pull-ups

You can do a body part split that would allow you to weight train every day. Or you could do full-body workouts 3 times a week and light cardio on your off days. I would recommend one active rest day a week with no formal training.

I’m 49. I lost 90lbs in a yr and a half. I went from 265lbs to 170lbs at my lowest. I now am 185 but good up and down 10lbs. I eat healthy but do eat often in the late evening. I want to start to workout but at my age am concerned about injury. I also don’t want to spent hrs a day to get fit. I just want to look good a be healthy. Working out seems to be able hurtle for me

I would start light and learn the movements before going heavier, or you could start with machine exercises. A lot of people are more comfortable using machines at first. Exercise is important at any age, but especially for those of us over 50.

I’m not sure what you are talking about, but if you are referring to me, I don't take testosterone injections, TRT or any kind of performance enhancing drugs.

TRT merely restores hormone levels to normal. Taking 600mg of test or more is not TRT which is 40 to 80mg a day.
