How to build muscle without steroids over 50
Eugene Sandow, George Hackenschmidt, Bobby Pandour, and Jack Lalanne all built muscle without steroids, and you can too. I’m going to take this one step farther because you can do this over 50.
Today we’re going to go over the 6 things you need to do to build muscle at any age.
First, we’ll talk about training because no matter how perfect your nutrition is, if you don't train, you’re not going to build muscle.
Of these old-school guys, Bobby Pandour was a Gymnast. Both Eugene Sandow and Jack Lalanne were proponents of lightweight training. Although they also performed incredible feats of strength, you don’t find out how strong you are without moving heavy things. So at some point, they had to train heavy.
Finally, we have George Hackenschmidt, who believed in heavy weight training.
But who’s right? Lightweights high reps, or heavyweight? Or bodyweight training? This is the wrong place to look.
If you are interested in losing body fat and adding muscle, please email me at 1shark1bite@gmail.com for information on my personal training services.

First, we need to establish a regular and progressive training program. Research has long established to build muscle. We need to train close to failure. It’s those last few reps before failure that build muscle regardless of the weight used or the number of repetitions done.
Doing this just once or a few times isn’t going to build muscle. You need to train your whole body regularly at least 2 or three times a week, slowly increasing the amount of weight you are using, focusing on compound movements.
The next 3 points all have to do with nutrition. First, eat enough protein. Protein provides the building blocks for muscle growth. If you don’t have enough of the amino acids that come from protein, your body isn’t going to be able to build muscle.
I recommend 30 to 35% of your diet being protein. The old school rule of one gram per pound of bodyweight works better if you apply it to your fat-free mass, especially if you are overweight.
Next, get lean. If you are overweight, prediabetic, or diabetic, you’ll benefit from losing excess body fat and the improved insulin sensitivity that comes along with it.
Insulin isn’t the only hormone that works better at a lower body fat level, as both testosterone and growth hormone have been shown to increase as a man loses belly fat.
If your testosterone is in the normal range, your going to be able to build muscle even if it’s at the lower end of normal.
An improved hormone profile is a great reason to lose excess body fat. But it’s not the only reason. It’s a lot easier to build muscle in a calorie surplus, if you’re already overweight, adding in more calories only compounds the problem.
The goal should be to get under 15% body fat. You could stop at a higher percentage, but I like under 15 because it's easier to see your progress when it isn’t hidden under a layer of fat.
The leaner you are, the longer you can be in a calorie surplus, going as low as 10% is still quite safe.
I’m losing body fat right now, so I can put myself into a slight calorie surplus for the next year. When I do enter into a surplus the goal will be to gain a pound a month. I accomplish this by adding a 100 calories a day into my meal plan and then assessing my weight every couple of weeks to see if I need to make any changes.
At the very most, you’ll want to add no more than two pounds of weight to your frame a month, as most natural guys won’t build more than a pound of muscle a month and long time lifters will add even less. The goal is to minimize the amount of fat we are adding and maximize muscle growth.
Protein isn’t the only macro that’s important. To maintain proper hormone function, we need a minimum of 20% of our calories coming from fats.
There’s no reason to be scared of carbs, either. Once you’ve lost weight and your hormones are functioning correctly, carbohydrates not only provide us with the energy to train, but they are very anti-catabolic, preventing muscle breakdown.
Shoot for at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
Supplements are not necessary to build muscle, and your money is better to spend on real food.

I have been training since 1970. After my military career, I always maintained a fitness lifestyle. A few times in my lifetime, I got careless with alcohol and lost a lot of my gains. Now, after 65, I have quit all forms of alcohol and feel in better shape than I was in my teens. I don't know why but every time I go to the gym I have been noticing alot of young women and men staring at me. I have lost some mass in my age, but I stay consistent.

I started off obese, over 50 and very low testosterone. I decided to try not taking TRT and instead shed the weight, cut out all hormone mimicking pollutants, take a good range of supplements and work my arse off. I’ve not only put on more muscle than I even had in my 20s when I was an athlete - and lost the fat -but a recent testosterone test shows my test is now higher than most people taking TrT. The Doc described it as unusually high. Dont give up on your body - what you think has gone forever can often be got back naturally. I did all this is under 6 months. 12 months later I Have the physique of a pro boxer - and I do t own any weights. It’s all been by running, rowing and resistance band workouts.

Hey Lawrence . Solid video. Thumbs Up. Is it possible to get jacked after 50 without TRT? Yes- IF you're on the extreme right end of the distribution curve, like those old-school guys. For the rest of us, there's no reason to make things harder than they need to be. Of course, just following the basic template you laid out is foundational to fitness. A little bit of medically supervised testosterone is a total game changer for your physique and your quality of life.

I've read quite a bit about those advantages you get when you get lean: Increase in Testosterone, better insulin sensitivity, a " lean " metabolism, and I believe there is also some kind of unique protein in the blood that plays a role in keeping heavy people -- heavy, which reduces significantly when overall body fat is reduced. It seems when the body is fat, it works to keep you fat.. When the body becomes lean, it works then to keep you lean. Thanks for the video...
@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula 2 года назад
I find that to be the case our bodies get used to the level of body fat we have and tends to fight to preserve it. The upside to that is once you get lean an stay lean for a while it becomes much easier to maintain that level of leanness.
@westfieldartworks8188
@westfieldartworks8188 2 года назад
@@Fitand50Formula I agree. That seems to be the case with how many things work in nature. The people that really need the fat loss advantages the most, (the heavy people), will get them the least, and inversely, the people that are already lean, will get them then most. Nature's reward system at work.

I did a college paper on Bulgarian weight lifting routine and nutrition to maximize testosterone back in the eighties. High intensity, limited volume of training was one key. Because testosterone levels drop like a rock past 45 minutes of strenuous activity. Key take away: limit most work outs to 30 minutes. Their diet was also key. Alot of high fat pork. High fat, medium protein and LOW carb! Key takeaway: keto and carnivores.

@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula Год назад
In my residence band workouts, I use a couple of his brig20 exercises and quite like them, but I incorporate them into my workouts instead of training exclusively with them. I think he has done a great job of looking at the best exercises biomechanically, so it makes sense to have them in our program, but muscle isn’t just a cord; it’s living tissue, and the tried and true exercises have been proven effective. So they remain the core of my program.

All good information, the only thing I would say is that as a natural you need fat for proper hormone levels, strength levels, recovery, joint health, etc. It is tough to lift heavy when your bf levels are too low and I would argue that below 15% is going to have a negative effect. I am 17% and in the best shape of my life at 50 years old. No drugs. I have been lifting for 35 years, have never wanted to be "lean" and I am walking furnace. I am 260+ lbs and carrying most of that weight in my legs and if you want to gain strength and muscle overall you cannot neglect your legs. They are the first to go. I have been training full body heavy compound, athletic movements for the last 15 years. I don't count calories but do make sure I get plenty of protein and fats in my diet.

I was huge on Leg training in my 30's, Squats, deadlifts, leg press. Now I use bands for legs, a good workout for toning but lost some size. I'm thinking about free weights again, but at 50 is It a waste of time? You still lift heavy?
@safathletics
@safathletics 2 года назад
@@Destroythealliance It is definitely not a waste of time. Yes I still lift heavy every week. Come to my channel and you’ll see my training. I would love to change the way people think. Too many feel that lifting heavy, using barbells, etc is not safe. It totally is safe. I’m 50 as well.

Best way to build muscle at 50 and over, is to start training when you're young like I did 36 years ago at 19.

@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula Год назад
I don’t believe most people need it; most people’s hormone levels, even over 50, will return to normal ranges once a person loses excess body fat and builds some muscle.

At 57, my goal is mostly maintenance but I do add weight/reps every now and then after a few months. I practice intermittent fasting and focus on high protein/low carb and don’t count calories. I do take vitamins and supplements cuz at my age it just seems like it’s better to make sure than to not get enough.

Hmm. I’m 57. I’m not as strong as I used to be, and a bit lighter. But I haven’t noticed too much difference. I find I can put on muscle relatively easily, still. I do fewer sets and rest more days between exercising body parts - usually 5-6 days. But that not because of age. I just found I don’t need to do all that much to get results. Often just -1-2 sets per exercise, often with a few forced reps or rest-pause for some exercises. I have no major mobility issues or injuries. But I’m careful with what I do.

I’m stuck. Nothing happens anymore. I’m pretty lean, train every other day, eat a lot of protein and healthy food. It’s like I reached my maximum muscle growth. What do I do now?
@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula Год назад
Do you take regular body measurements and progress photos? I’m not sure I could tell my progress without them, as I don’t build muscle that fast. But since 2021, my arms have increased by 3/8 in, chest by 1 in, shoulders 1 3/8 in, thighs almost an inch, and 5/8 on my calves. Those aren’t big numbers, but they are growth.

The old school guys never counted macros or anything. I doubt they did cycles of bulking and counting. I understand how it's beneficial, but I just feel like it's too much for me if I started counting macros.

I never understood "1 gram of protein per pound". I'm 230 pounds. How the heck am I going to eat 230 grams of protein without consuming a MASSIVE amount of calories? My goal is to get lean, and I can't do that consuming 3,500 calories a day which is STILL probably not enough to reach 230 grams of protein. So much of this info is so contradictory. "Don't eat a lot of calories!" and "Consume massive amounts of protein" at the same time? Makes no sense to me.
@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula 11 месяцев назад
This is why I prefer to use a percentage of total calories, making 30% of my daily calories from protein. But if you want to use the gram per pound guideline, make it a gram per pound of lean body mass or what you would weigh minus your fat mass.

Im interested. We are told to expend more energy above calorie consumption to lose weight but say if a normal range of calories for an older man is 2000 calories, how can we burn more than that in exercise on a daily basis? On a stationery bike for 20 mins I can burn 200 calories only. A weight session may burn less than that. The alternative I suppose is to eat less but then you compromise in nutrients.
@Fitand50Formula

The best way to lose excess body fat is a combination of both exercise and diet. To maintain all the nutrition you need in a calorie deficit, it’s essential to eat quality minimally processed whole foods

Most guys over 50 shouldn’t need it and should focus first on getting into shape, eliminating excess body fat and improving their diet before even considering TRT.

If you can show me measurements of muscle growth after 50 , showing increases in size ... And go against the natural cell death and lower cell replenishment and lower testosterone that occurs with age ... I'm be absolutely amazed !!! Possibly the only human who's done it at 50 plus . I wish it was possible , but i don't believe it so .
