You could also pour a little fresh oil in while the valve is open to flush a little bit of the old oil out.

my thoughts exactly: get a quart of the cheapest oil (probably non-synthetic) and dump it at the end in to flush; still some will remain but it's better than nothing!

My car takes 3.7L so I just push the 0.3L through to flush to finish off the container.

Have it on two cars. I put 1/4 quart into filler port too get some old oil out. Usually left over stuff from last oil change. Makes it a quick oil change. And you find yourself changing oil more frequently. Prolonging your engine.

Good point! Plus, I have to add oil to all my vehicles anyway because they burn oil. Two of them I add a court every thousand miles. Another one I have to add a quart when there’s about 50% oil life left. They are always getting fresh oil mixed in. I’m 0% worried about the small amount that the valve leaves behind.

Longer drain time will mean less oil in the pan wait until it stops dripping completely it may take an hour or more. I understand you're not retired yet so you probably can't spare that amount of time. I removed mine to check this on a 2016 Explorer and got way less barely a few drops. My vehicle was horizontal on a lift at the time so if using ramps would probably make a difference too. TY for a good vid and I give my Fomoto a👍

Good point. I used the timing of a typical oil change process. I let it drain until it transitioned from a stream to a slow drip. Then removed the valve and again let it drain until it transitioned from a stream to a slow drip. I did not let it drain overnight until every last drop was gone. That would definitely be interesting to do, but figured it wasn’t a practical real world application.

To put the issue into persepctive, a full oil/filter change typically leaves about 0.8 quarts , about 760 ml, left in the engine-slightly more or less depending on engine, when using stock drain plug. If Fumoto leaves another 70 ml, that is a 10% increase in remaining, undrained oil.

Thanks for testing these "velves" so I know how much oil residue remains.

That is, if the car is in a flat position. However, if the car is on ramps, the angle of the drain hole will be more slanted, allowing more oil to be drained.

That’s true. This was a flat ground test.

To be honest it won’t matter because you’re putting a fresh oil filter every time you do an oil change… Well at least your supposed to

I completely agree. Plus, all my vehicles burn a little oil, so I’m adding fresh oil regularly as well.

glad mine is on the bottom of the pan. 0% left over after draining.

I wonder if I can dring down the part that screws into the pan so that it comes to the bottom of the pan so all oil drains out? Or can I drill a hole in the screw area inside the pan so that the hole comes to the bottom of the pan and so the oil in the bottom drains out?

It wouldn’t change the thread engagement, so as long as it’s screwed in tight, I personally don’t think it would matter.
@rdkirk3834
@rdkirk3834 Месяц назад
It's not just the shape of the oil pan but also the composition of the pan. A cast pan has its own thickness to accommodate the plug thread, and it may achieve nearly perfect draining with a standard plug completely removed because the innermost thread is at the level of the inner surface of the pan. A sheet metal pan will usually have a welded insert to accommodate the threads, and the inner level of the thread is still above the inner surface of the pan. If the Fumoto thread is no deeper than the thread of that insert, there won't be any less oil drained.

I always have the nose of my cars up in the air when I drain. I always get more oil out than when flat. This ensures I get the most out even with a Fumoto valve installed...which I do.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial

That definitely helps!

The threads that extend too far into the pan could be cut off I think. I don’t worry about it as I usually change my oil often enough any remaining oil in the pan is okay with me.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial

Same. Plus I add oil between oil changes. All of my vehicles burn some oil, which is normal.

Oil drain valves state the oil must be at operating temp so it can drain fully

Good point! I always change the oil when the engine is warm. I assume I did it for these tests, but it was so ago yeah because I had to set up for filming, I can’t be 100% sure.

Nice! I do have a third video in progress. Timing how long they take to drain. Since the path is smaller, they do take a little bit longer. Maybe 10 minutes. I usually flip the valve open, then go do something else and come back later.

For proper oil change parking the vehicle at appropriate angle would be best.

That is correct. I was made aware of an error in the information. I decided to remove the video, fix the error, and re-post it. I did not want to leave it posted with incorrect information.

I don't mean to be negative, but how HARD is it to put a wrench on it? Get a little oil on our hands? 🙄 They make a flexable extension on a socket that your hands are no where near oil. What's a REAL PIA is getting out jacks/jack stands & taking off shields. I'm a fanatic on getting ALL of the oil out. I even tilt my car to help empty everything. 1/2 cup is 1/2 cup too much. Sorry.
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial
@HowtoandReviewsOfficial 10 месяцев назад
Nothing wrong with that! I did it that way just fine for 25 years. In my personal experience, I have two vehicles that are very low ground clearance. There’s not room to get a wrench under there with any leverage. With the valve, I can easily reach under and flip the switch. I do about 10 oil changes a year, so the convenience of not using a tool does stack up. Especially in the freezing winter. It’s a luxury to slide a catch pan underneath and flip a switch. Other people might just enjoy, trying new gadgets. It’s a free country, people like different things and can spend their $20 however they want. 🤷‍♂️ But, if someone prefers to use their wrench, absolutely nothing wrong with that!

You are also running the risk of over torqueing or cross threading especially if someone else is doing oil change. Fumoto is replaceable and saves the pan threads some wear and tear.

Its not hard at all, but maybe people like the cleanliness of it, i have a resin driveway and even though i used 2 tarps i still spilled a little oil which has now stained the drive (using the "classic" method). My truck takes 8 litres of oil and since most oil tubs or spare bottles etc only hold 5 litres it gets messy swapping tubs around. With this i can simply feed a tube directly into the empty oil bottles from the last change, close it when the bottle is nearly full and swap the bottle out for another and then open it back up again to finish the drain 🤷 no mess, no fuss

These valves are worth it. 💯
@johngreen2510

@@davidmidcalf3470 Precisely. When you spend a lot of money on a pavestone driveway, you don’t want to be spilling oil. If you have ever changed the oil in a 3rd gen Tacoma…the oil literally SHOOTS out the oil pan and splashes like crazy.
