FYI the diagram at 0:55 is not 19 cubic feet. its 6,859 cubic feet.

19 cubic feet is not a cube with sides of 19 feet. A 19 cubic feet box would has sides of 2' 8".

Okay, you pay to change all the signs, speed meters, radar guns, text books and educate the public, then sure! People seen to forget America is larger, therefore more stuff to physically change in order to adopt a new measurement system.

thank you! I love TED Talks. He was talking about over 10 or 12waist and shoulder high plants per person. Including what oxygen used by cars, I am surprised that people living in cities don't suffocate.

Cubic feet (ft^3) or Cubic Metres (m^3) are just units of volume. If I have a box that was 1 ft x 3 ft x 2 ft, then the total volume would 6 ft^3. So if a box has 19 ft^3 of volume, it could have the dimensions of 1 ft x 1 ft x 19 ft or it could have the dimensions of 2.67 ft x 2.67 ft x 2.67 ft if it was a cube.

@fuckyoutubengoogle2

@@sindotjNo, not really because 19 ft x 19 ft x 19 ft = 6859 cubic ft. But 2.668 ft x 2.668 ft x 2.668 ft ~ 19 cubic ft. since 2.668 about equals the cube root of 19. Try it yourself.

@artmcteagle

Waylan Keith, The diagramm is wrong, it depicts 6,859 cubic feet(19'x19'x19'). 19 cubic ft would be depicted by a cube having equal sides of approx. 2.688 feet. Here's my proof, 2.688x2.688x2.688=19(approx). I assume he meant to say we inhale 2200l of O2 per day, of which 550l is metabolised, or around 19.4 cubic feet at 1 atmosphere of pressure. Quite sloppy for a scientific video.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I disagree. I may have taken the stupid math classes but a cube has to have three equal dimensions which would be 19" high by 19" long by 19" wide, or 19^3. So you can't have two sides of different dimensions or it would be a rectangle. But I may be wrong just going off what I learned in school

+BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks I am still amazed that engineers have figured out a way for astronauts to store sufficient oxygen for them to breathe on a trip to the moon & back, or on the International Space Station for months. I cannot imagine whatever little bits of plants astronauts brought to the ISS could be bioengineered to produce any significant amount of O2. What *I* am trying to find out: how much oxygen does a tree produce on average, given height & total leaf area.

Drop the metric units. This stuff is so brainy and cool I ❤ it
@artmcteagle
@artmcteagle 6 лет назад
The use of Metrics has many advantages. It is now known as the International System of Units (SI). It is used to measure everyday things such as the mass of a sack of flour, the height of a person, the speed of a car, and the volume of fuel in its tank. It is also used in science, industry and trade. The metric system was designed to have properties that make it easy to use and widely applicable, including units based on the natural world, decimal ratios, prefixes for multiples and sub-multiples, and a structure of base and derived units. It is also a coherent system, which means that its units do not introduce conversion factors not already present in equations relating quantities. It has a property called rationalisation that eliminates certain constants of proportionality in equations of physics. So if you love cool brainy stuffy then ipso facto you would love the metric system.

A lot of us know and understand the metric system. But living here forces us to stick to the one we have. My job requires that I produce goods with units written in inches because that's the unit the majority use unfortunately. Doesn't seem like there's anything I can do about it.

It'd be awesome if you could add to this a little bit. For example, while we breathe 11,000 liters of air every day, and 550 liters of oxygen, how much of the other 10,450 liters of air do we require? Approximately how much of that is nitrogen, carbon dioxide, ect? What is the minimum amount of "air" a person would need to survive a day? What are the proportions of different gases at different elevations, such as La Rinconada, Peru or Mammoth Lakes, California? :)

Do you think they could invent a device that transmits oxygen straight into the capillaries of the lungs and create a device that compressed ~1000 liters of oxygen, possibly made of carbon nanotubes. You stick it in your mouth and when you breath in you take in oxygen but breath out any unwanted gases. Pretty much like scuba gear but without all the heavy gear. But now that I think about it that gas would weigh a lot. Not sure quite how it'd work.

lupic90 just watched a BBC DOC. and in part of it they did a thing on how many plants one would need to be able to breath in a in closed environment that measured 30 cubic meters or 1060 cubic feet roughly. They had this guy get into a tank that the oxygen content was significantly lower than what a human needs and that to what early earth was(12% where in as the earths atmosphere now is about 21%) and they said about 300 plants which had 11,000 leaves was enough to raise the room from 12% oxygen to enough to be that of the current oxygen levels on earth the 21% within 48 hours . Not only that but some plants produce more oxygen than others and some have cycles where they use more oxygen at night than they produce in the day yada yada. Also it would depend on a day and night transition or if you have a 24 hour light environment, which means it would depend on if you use the light from the sun or if you produce the light artificially, seeing as part of the plant producing oxygen is the photosynthesis phase in which the plant uses light to turn co2 into o2. Now if that is 100% "spot on" or not I dont know, but its something I have been looking into as well,. I would also expect that it would depend on how much water they were given, how much co2 the person is producing because the plants need co2 (since in this video we only use 5% of the o2 and turn it into co2 so it would depend on how active the person was and how much the plants would need of co2 in order to continue producing o2.) also other factors like how big the person is (bigger person means bigger lungs I would assume along with more oxygen needed.) and the amount of dead leaf matter the plants produce etc. The name of the BBC show was in the How to Grow a Planet. season 1 episode 3 Life from Light. But who knows, I think the best course of action if you are looking at putting yourself in an enclosed environment for an extended ammount of time (Time spent relying on the plants for oxygen would be another factor of course) where the plants produce the oxygen you need, you might want to just double the amount of any number anyone gives you just to be on the safe side lol wouldnt want to become plant food for misjudging lol

Questions. Water is made of Hydrogen & Oxygen right? So, we get Oxygen from the air to live. What about the Oxygen in the water that we drink, where did they go? And what about the Hydrogen? Is 1 litre of water simply a litre of Hydrogen + Oxygen? Or what are the quantities of Oxygen & Hydrogen you can get from 1 litre of water? Btw, thx for the video.
