we are killing our home and no country is going to do anything serious about it until we've reached catastrophic levels. i sometimes want a career in environmental protection but it feels like such a depressing and constantly disheartening job.

This honestly saddens and angers me. I'm currently studying this topic in ecology at my college and the effects plastic waste has on both marine and on land ecosystems is horrible. I personally think that both the general public and governments need to work harder and put more effort into fixing this problem.

Very well, what do you propose to replace the massive dearth of usable material we're left with ?
@abdulhaqshaik7649
@abdulhaqshaik7649 6 лет назад
MrATN800 There are many ways, to adapt but only if you are willing to do so. For example Look at this video of person who has very little waste in her life m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BxKfpt70rLI.html

No, I mean plastic is an omnipresent building material, precisely because you can modulate it to your exact. What would you use for the myriads of objects that incorporate some element of plastic in it ? Wood ? Would require too many forests with the amounts we're considering here. Metal ? The pharaonic increase in demand and subsequent mining rush would pollute so much we'd just be trading one poison for another. Understand I too would like for us to have a less omnipresent plastic. But is it really feasible ? On a global scale ?
@abdulhaqshaik7649
@abdulhaqshaik7649 6 лет назад
MrATN800 Your points are Valid, but I don’t think they should put us off from using less plastic in our day to lives, simple example might be cutting down on the use the plastic bags and other unnecessary items that we can avoid with some discipline. Also we should try make sure that the plastic we do use ends up in the right places, that are being recycled and not just dumped in a landfill, where it can make its way to the ocean. But also the feasibility is an issue wood and metal can’t replace all uses for plastics that is true, But I do think we can reduce adding to the cycle of plastic, by which I mean recycle and reuse the plastic we have produced so far and be very strict on essentially producing new plastic. This may not be economically worth in the short term but cleaning up the oceans and bringing, wasted plastic and recycling it. I think us commoners being aware and take some sort of action in reducing plastic and rescuing and recycling it in our day to day, is better than nothing. This maybe a more sustainable approach, what we are doing now. And movements don’t always start with the entire world taking part, but a few individuals doing the right things that can cause others around them to follow. And in the well connect society we are today, We can face and solve the issues that confront us, much faster. :-)

So why aren't the manufacturers of plastics and oil companies involved with mitigating the severe impacts of the product they've created.Seems appropriate that some of their large profits should be used to develope solutions to the ongoing problem.Not saying that people shouldn't carry a certain responsibility for their part in consuming more and more.

90% of the plastic waste in the world's oceans come from just 10 rivers. 8 of which are in south east asia and 2 in africa. even so, the problem of dumping waste into riverbeds is huge even in smaller rivers, anywhere there is poverty or a 3rd world. Even Brazil's river was disgusting at the last olympics. Almost every river in Indonesea has poor people who do not have adequate or affordable or any waste collection just dump their trash into empty river beds and wait for the monsoons to wash it to sea.

Thanks for video, very useful info. . . to help influence the need to fix up our discarded plastic waste. There is a lot of imagery around now to visualise the problem. . . needs fixing. If interested: For the ocean plastic pollution problem. . . I made a little video story set to sound tracks all from stock footage. . . about a bucket crab on a mission as fed up with plastic on its beach. . . it has keypoints in it. . . to use as educational tool. * Planet = Clean it. . . Plastic use = Lean it. * Anthropocene Epoch AFFECT and EFFECT. * Discarded plastic waste. . . it calls The Everlasting Poo. . . hense the title. * there are other points in it as well @

How about everyone using refillable bottles made from stainless steel or Tritan reusable plastic containers - fine for takeaway drinks instead of the 'free' plastic cups and water bottles that are a part of the problem. Also, we now have 100% compostable bottles and containers that look just like plastic - when discarded the material returns to the earth, digested by bacteria... yummy! The technology is here now, but BIG FOOD/BIG DAIRY/BIG PHARMA will not spend even a fraction of a penny extra on packaging unless they are forced to by Law... go talk to your Member of Parliament, see if they share your concerns.... not likely!

Hm, let's look at some numbers... The volume of all water on Earth would be about 332.5 million cubic miles (mi3), or 1,386 million cubic kilometers (km3). A single cubic mile of water weighs 4.6 billion tons. So even if we took all the plastic produced in a year it would be dwarfed by a SINGLE cubic mile of water. And we have 332.5 million cubic miles more to go. This is not really the problem that people claim it to be. We could literally take all the plastic we produce for the next thousand year, toss it in the ocean and not worry too much about it.
