Those 1.9 diesel engines from the VAG-group are indestructible. They can run forever with not a lot of service. Really like the restoration of this skoda! That's awesome! *Maybe you can go with Miles to the (old) factory where he was built/born?* That would be a historical thing to do for Miles! Maybe you can donate the car to a Skoda museum. That way Miles get the love he deserves in the future.

My dad had a 2004 Passat B5 with that 1.9TDI 130hp. I can't even remember how many times he replaced the injectors. I think like 4 times. He also replaced the turbo. Then the injectors failed again, so he got rid of the car. When he got rid of it, it had about 150k km.

Well a Volvo P1800 had managed 3.267 million miles on the original engine and gearbox but needed a new clutch at 1.6 million miles In that mileage it used 112889 gallons of petrol ,492 spark plugs and an amazing 33 sets of tyres. Oil was changed every 3500 miles using 16 55gallon drums of oil and the car was parked outside and has never broken down in 52 years .!!

@@ronnieince4568 yeah but don't forget that most of these miles were done continously, driving long distances. There were more miles driven between cold starts compared to the average driver . Cold starts is what damages the engine most. Despite that its still an amazingly durable engine

107hp after 433,000 miles is damn good going, but in view of what you found in the engine when you pulled the top end off I'm not surprised. This car has been very carefully serviced over its whole life and they're mostly motorway miles which are the easiest on a well-maintained car by far, low stress running with the engine nicely warmed up. Mind you this was a 90 hp version of an engine that came from the factory with up to 150 so it's not what you could call stressed. The chip tune it got was clearly a very good one indeed giving more power and better MPG...

Actually not really. Those 1.9 TDI 66kW (same in Golf IV, Passat, Altea, ...) needed only oil change, that was all the maintenace they had to have. There are few of them with over 1.4m km on them and still running fine. If the engine in this one would have not been opened, it would have the whole power (110hp). The 1.9 TDI 74 kW and 81kW engines were also good, but after 350 000km the turbo started to get weak or malfunction ocassionaly. Also, the "lazy" 1.9 SDI 50kW can survive every person on the planet and still run (drove one with 1.8m km a long time ago and I know for sure they use it till this day).
@tiagovids
@tiagovids 6 лет назад
I think you are wrong, this engine os a vp, it only came on 90 and 110hp whit a variable geometry turbo if i am not wrong, the 150hp it is a pd, that comes whit 130, 150 and 160hp i think, but the engine os almost the same, only small chances between the vp and pd

In eastern EU (Bulgaria in particular) these have their counters (or whatever the thing that keeps track of how much distance the car has gone in its life) dialed back and sold as 150-200k km cars. And people believe that. xD
@Morpheus-pt3wq
@Morpheus-pt3wq 4 года назад
Slovakia here, it´s the same, but when people think about a car that has 200k km it is "worn out", it´s the most logical thing to do. It´s actually pure stupidity. Wear state depends on the use. If the car was used for short trips and/or in the city, it will be worn out more even with less km on counter. And if the car was used mostly on county roads/highways, it may have more km on counter, but look almost as new. People still don´t understand they must look at general condition and not just one stupid counter. But redialing the counter also does one thing really bad - most service schedules are bound to that counter, so if you get a car with redialed counter, you can easily miss service schedules for some parts.

I also had one of these beautiful Octavia I for eleven years and 82,000 miles. Same color (funny enough) but with a petrol engine. The day, I gave it to trade-in for my new car, the garage owner (who inspected the car in behalf of the dealer) mentioned, that the engine (1.6l / 101hp / petrol) easily could achieve two or even three times of the current mileage. My next car was a Skoda again, which I drive ever since (10 years now).

I really love this series because it shows people that you don't need to throw away your car after 100,000 miles because it's "too old", "has no life left", or "costs more to maintain than replace." People forget that cars aren't cheap, and shouldn't be treated as a monthly payment, but something you should expect to own for a long time, especially from new.

We had a 1.6 AEE engine in our mk3 Golf and it had about 525 000 km on it after we got rid of it, due to the rotten body. The engine itself was still fine, though. Was in our family ever since the 60 000 km mark. Seems like these were built to last too. Now I understand even better, why people like 1.9 TDI's. Great video.

My old timer was bought new in 1996. She just turned 400,000 miles. She is equipped with a 4.0 litre inline six engine. The decades are showing their influence because she does not get up to speed as fast as she used to. She also does not go as fast as she used to go many years ago. But she will still move about at 80 miles per hour and does not leak oil. The engine has never been serviced. I am toying with the idea of rebuilding it. It does not make any strange noises. It is just getting tired. I am certain she can get to 500,000 without a rebuild.

Id'd really like to have that readout. Cuz everytime my family talks about how some random engine was "built to last" and others "aren't reliable and will break no matter what" They will especially say this about anything European. I would love to prove them wrong. Been a huge fan of your work. Cant wait for the V6 swap for Phil!!!!!!

Currently on the market for an Octavia VRS estate. From what i have seen on the market mileage seems to be quite high and it had put me off nth. But after watching these videos I am quite re-assured that bit I can find something with a comprehensive service history I needent be as concerned with the mileage being a little high. Good videos, look forward to seeing the final result.

My 2011 Audi a7 with 3l tdi v6 have 282k miles and after new ecu software it made 288hp and 712nm on all wheels. Engine doesn't consume any motor oil and does under 6l/100km fuel consumption on highway. I think vag 3l tdi is very great engine too.

Alex, A signed dyno sheet detailing power output and available torque would make a great addition to my "Signed Power Output and Available Torque Readout Wall". In fact it would be the inaugural one and probably never matched nor bettered, or to be fair even repeated. Keep up the videos and I'm looking forward t the next one.

Old car engines are much better than the new cars. They are more reliable and will last a lot longer as you can see from this car
@CheapSushi
@CheapSushi 6 лет назад
Reaalllly depends on the car and engine. Some cars have engine cracking / separation problems.
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 6 лет назад
Needs to be a good engine in the first place, being driven very very leisurly, and serviced a whole lot. Then you got something to last.
@CheapSushi
@CheapSushi 6 лет назад
But then you could say the same about newer cars and engines. You made a generalized statement. But there were plenty of flawed designs in older cars. The saving grace on many European sold cars was the fact they were diesel, thus more robust in the first place.
