One thing I know for certain is that you need 2 sticks of ram and not 1.

The big thing I noticed going from 8gb to 16gb is that I can do way more while gaming. I couldn't really tab out with 8gb, maybe to a web browser with a couple tabs. Moving to a Ryzen 2600 / 16gb of ram from 8gb i5 4460 was instantly noticeable. I know the CPU is a huge part of it as well, but now I can open 20 tabs, 1 AAA game, streaming, recording and whatever else.

I've been watching a lot of videos about RAM and I am not computer smart. This video really cleared up a lot for me. Thank you.

I put a 4GB ram into my laptop and tried to play fallout for, sitting here waiting a long time for the world to load, put 8GB into it and then world actually loaded and the Lag was mostly gone.

I would argue the expected life span of your system is a factor too. My laptop is over 10 years old and came with 4GB RAM. That was high end at the time, but is the bare minimum now. That's why I'm looking at getting 32GB in my next laptop. I may not need it to start with, but I want it to last ten years too.

It depends on the operating system and what you use it for. In the old days I created a ram drive and loaded a particular app totally into ram and ran it from there. The performance increase was insane. But that was DOS, yes, DOS. I used that example to show that it depends on how the computer uses ram. If there is a ton of ram available then more ram can be used by any particular app. If the app always does it the same way no matter the free available ram, then that's another thing and likely the most common. So do most apps actually benefit from tons of ram? I don't really know. But I am saying that there is way more than one way to skin a ram cat. Is the trend towards flexible ram usage or towards faster, common development cycles. I imagine that there are code templates available to make them most of whatever the ram scenario is. Wouldn't that be the best? Then tons of ram would be taken the most advantage of.

Great video Linus, I been using 16GB RAM. Or at least 8GB of RAM, I have 3 Intel Core i7 3840QM HP laptops, one has 8GB of RAM. The other two have 16GB of RAM. I don't go no lower then 8GB, I do a lot multi-tasking on my laptops.

These guides have always been spot-on for how much memory you need to do what you want to accomplish with your computer. In 2016, I believe it was 4GB, and now it has doubled again to 8Gb. It matches my thinking as well, and I plan to have at least 8Gb of ram in my PC.

When it comes to RAM, I generally understand it to be: 4 GB for something like a Chromebook that's intended primarily for light web browsing, e-mail, and word processing 8 GB for a general use PC or an entry level gaming PC 16 GB for most gaming PCs beyond entry level 32 GB for a workhorse PC

If you are using AMD APUs like AMD Ryzen 3 3200g, you will definitely need 8GB or more of RAM as the integrated graphics share the memory with the RAM(The iGPU uses the RAM as its video memory)

I found my RAM cheaply enough I didn't have to worry about choosing how much I really need. I just maxed out my motherboard with 32 GB and never once regretted it. In fact I had a DeusEx game that was performing horribly when I had just 8 GB originally. It really was recommended to have 16 for that. It was very choppy and loading between levels took forever. Now with double the minimum recommended RAM it is a thing of the past! All my other requirements for the game were met except I didn't have enough RAM before that upgrade.

Just a rule, for Star Citizen Free-Flight comes about, when they say 16GB Minimum, it really does mean 16GB.

I have been making computers for over 25 Years and 3 programs take advantage of RAM Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Resolve. I have 3 Computers with 256 GB Ram that serve me well. I can do more with the machines while rendering. I had a video editing project that was a 360 Degree Tour it took 18 hours to render even with 256 GB of Ram and another unit for the same project with 128GB Ram which took about the same amount of time. Linus, you are right, but I am just a Tech Guy who likes equipment. Thanks for the memory refresher . . .

Three weeks ago I shelled out $$$ for workstations with an i9. I do data analysis and programming on huge sets of data... so I confirmed with the tech support for this rig that I could indeed put 8x32GB udimm sticks. 256GB is THE sweet spot. You might think that I just threw away my money... but in a data analysis that I just ran, my completion time was five minutes.... when on my old system (32GB) it was 23 minutes. Now multiply that about 8 times a week and this will pay for itself in a month or two. Looking back, I should have gone with the dual Xeon version of this unit.... I could have pushed that one to 512GB and shaved another couple minutes off. Hindsight is 20/20.

The two games I play primarily are DCS and MSFS. Both of these eat tremendous amounts of memory. In DCS when I had only 16GB, a reasonably busy multiplayer server or complex mission would use all the RAM there was to use. I would experience a serious hang if someone joined the server or went Rambo on a SAM battery, sometimes causing a CTD. 32GB fixed this, and I almost always see memory utilization up into the 20s. In VRAM too, 8GB has proven to be adequate in 1080 but flat out inadequate for 4k. Without the change to go buy a 2080ti or something with more, I've had to disable all AA entirely in order to get playable frames in 4k (4k helps tremendously with spotting planes visually). Really looking forward to that sweet sweet 16GB of VRAM that comes on the new Big Navi cards.
