I practice from one to five hours everyday. I took lessons as a child starting at ten to eighteen. Stopped practing regularly. Then at age 54 had three heart attacks and a stroke. I lost my memory of piano but was determined to get it all back. Now at 58 I practice 1 to 5 hours a say and can play Moonlight sonata . Yaaaa

As an adult, I'm actually practicing more than as a kid, because I'm better at time management. I practice 20 minutes before work, 20 minutes after work, and then 20 minutes in the evening. I learn more this way than if I practiced for 1 hour straight. I've been able to keep this up for a while now, and I'm pretty proud of myself 😊

I practice three times a day for 15-30 minutes per session. I find that having short practice sessions is good for my focus and it helps me get results in really short progressions. It's nice to see that when I'm struggling with something in the morning, it goes better in the afternoon and I'm more comfortable with it in the evening.

I practise in the morning about 1 to 1 1/2 hours on either my pieces or what I like to call my Nuts and Bolts: scales/arpeggios/dominants/diminishes/triads. And then in the afternoons I do the same amount of time but opposite to what I worked on in the morning. I will do that for 4 days, then chose a day on the weekend that is my Piano drill day and I run everything together. Then I get out of the house and walk, return and sit down and just do my pieces. Doing this and adding a lot of patience, and understanding that there is no ‘short cut’ or ‘magic’ to learning the piano just repeat, repeat, repeat makes me continue to play this instrument. Because practice is the only answer; steady, consistent practice. I’m an Adult Beginner piano player and am entering my third year of playing, yes I regret I never took piano as a child but am pleased that I started now as an adult and I just can’t stop. What a fulfilling and rich world to have music!

I didn’t practice a lot when I was younger, before 14year old in average I practiced around 45min per day, when I was 14 I studied 2 pieces that was very hard for me at the moment(moszkowski’s op72 no2 étude and Mendelssohn’s rondo capriccioso) I started to be really methodical, and doubled my practice time. That year I really progressed a lot! When I was 15 I decided to take piano very seriously, I practiced at least 3 hours in average. In that year I studied one of my favorite piece: la Campanella! It was very hard, but by fighting in each jump, and trying do detach from the technical aspect and focusing on the music, I progressed hugely! After that I feel that no more piece seems impossible to learn Lol I increased my practicing time to 4 hours! And still progressing steadily! Now I’m 17, feel very comfortable playing la Campanella Lol That’s to my Great teacher!

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. A few things I would share about learning. 1. As an adult beginner, I have started enough other things to know if I can't play things slowly, well, I am not really in control. I learned that 35 years ago taking skiing lessons (as an adult). 2. Home alone I am very safe. The minute I try things on a different piano for my lesson with my accomplished instructor, it doesn't take much to knock me off the path. I accept that - instructor-time toughens me up. 3. Part of my fun with piano is watching that daily improvement, so I am motivated to keep up with hour long and longer practice sessions. 4. It takes about an hour and a half to really get confident and control the piano. I hope the time it takes to get there gets shorter and shorter. 5. If I can't do something - I CAN'T DO IT! That's my basic test, and my instructor gets it when I say that when I flub something at my lesson. 6. My new test is audio-recording my attempts to get something right. It is like a virtual audience that I am accountable to. One piece took me 20 tries - after practicing a ton(!) - to get it perfectly right. A couple weeks later I listened again and I had progressed even further past that, with better musicality. 7. Your video on sight reading is right on - no matter how tempting it is, DON'T LOOK DOWN! Actually, I was teaching myself sight reading and my instructor saw I could handle it well for my early level, told me I get an "A" for that. Thanks again for your video shares.

Really great advice Jazer...! I practice about 45 mins to an hour per day, and I have one 30 min lesson each week. It seems to be working well; I was a complete beginner 2 years ago (when I found middle C for the first time!), and have just started Grade 5. I definitely think as an adult it is much easier to dedicate time to practice, as most of the time we are only doing it as a hobby.

I'm glad you mentioned quality, in addition to having your mind in it, it's also important to make sure your mechanics are correct, doing something the wrong way over and over again doesn't yield improvement it ingrains bad habits. You also have to be willing to honestly evaluate your skills and admit your weaknesses and work on them.

Ik, this is old but I want to comment anyway. I picked a harder song to learn in my beginner piano book and I had to learn a few simbols so I new how to play it. Well I ended up skimming through what I needed to know and completely misunderstood ties, I have need playing the song wrong (and made it harder) for a few weeks now and only just yesterday got to the section on ties and slurs and learned how I should be playing it. Luckily it wasn't months and I corrected for it fast, but yeah, it pays to be mindful and take things slow.

My practice technique... Every day... Select a passage you're experiencing difficulty: 1. SLOW IT DOWN... with a metronome. 2. 5 Coin Method... Play the passage until you get it right. Move a coin from the left to the right... and play it again. If you get it right, then move another coin over. If you get it wrong, then start over again. After you ultimately move all 5 coins, you're almost there... because you have to get it right a 2ND DAY too! This is how you cement it into your BRAIN. 3. Increase the speed until it is correct and apply the 5 Coin Method AGAIN !! .... This is a sure-fired way to see real improvement.

I practice between 15 minutes and an hour a day, depending on the day. I work 12 hour shifts, so it's hard to get in an hour in those days. Also, I break up my practice time. I'll do a few minutes first thing in the morning then at least once or twice more during the day. It's easier for me that way. I also split my time between exercises, practicing pieces I already know, and whatever the latest piece is that I'm working on.

I split up each session like this: - at least half an hour praticing on specific exercises I saw in my previous piano lesson - roughly one hour on pieces I actually like (jumping back and forth between pieces to avoid mental fatigue) - half an hour improvising - getting back to the first exercise for a while I have no clue if it's an ideal plan, but I do get some results.

How much should I practice every day? This seems like a simple, straightforward question, but there is a lot more to it. I started on the piano back in early 2000, before RU-vid. I thought that I was practicing enough, about an hour a day or so. I took lessons (expensive lessons) and didn’t get much in the way of motivation or advice from my teacher. I quit after a few years because I felt that I wasn’t getting anywhere. I took it up again two years ago, except this time around there is a little something called the internet. I know how to get better, and it takes a lot more than an hour a day to get where I want to be. I don’t have much in the way of talent, but I’m motivated and I’m a very hard worker. I was before, but I just didn’t have any idea of how to go about being a better musician. Now I do. I have spells where I play a lot, and there are times when life gets in the way. I figure that 30 minutes a day is the bare minimum if I don’t want to creep backwards, and with two-hour sessions I can improve. I still suck, but that’s just how it is when you start this late in life.

BurnEverything its possible to practice only 15 min if you are only targeting 1-6 measures in a specific piece and just need to repeat a sequence of certain fingerings.

I usually practiced for hours and didn't get enough sleep, woke up tired the next day. Then I decided to practice and make sure I got enough rest before practicing the next day. It really improve my skills efficiently, my brain just clicks like it remembers everything I've learned. Since that day, sleeping has become my hobby 😅

Hello Jaz,I practice on average of 50 to 60 minutes on five days. Thanks for saying “Be mindful ...” I usually pay attention on notes only and I’m terrible on time signatures. I’ve tried metronome 😔. Any practical way? BTW, I started my piano lesson a year ago at the age of 64. Thanks so much young man, M

Hey Jason. Love your content. Empirical, well-managed duration, and straight to the point. I'm an engineer on early 30s, without any musical education before. I bought a keyboard (61 keys) around 1,5 month ago. I love piano on recent years, without any specific reason. But I really want to learn playing it. I spent 1,5 - 2 hours on weekdays after work. My menus are: - fingering (using 60 hanon) - 30mins - scale & keys - 30mins - sight reading - 30-60mins (czerny op 599 for beginner) I haven't learned any classic song, since I'm really new. I need to learn the basic. Without a teacher, I learn from any resource I could find. 1) What do you think about my daily menu? Any suggestion? 2) How can I know if I'm ready to learn classical music? Any suggestion for beginner? 3) Is there any specific thing that I need to concern by practicing on keyboard rather than piano? Thank you and greetings from Indonesia. Regards.

Hi Yosia, practicing on a keyboard will be fine for now. I suggesting changing to something that is 88 keys in 2 years time. I like you are spending 1.5-2 hours on it daily after work. My suggestion is that you continue your practice but find a quality teacher that can guide you in your progression. It will help you have a clearer direction for the future. Also he/she will identify your mistakes and bad habits and correct them before you get used to them. What songs/pieces are you practicing?

Appreciate it! Yeah, having a digital piano is my priority if I already understand the basic of music theory, well-balanced finger, and can read a music sheet fluently. 2 years then :) Now I'm only practicing those 3 items I mentioned before...without any real song. Is there any problem with that Jazer?

@@yosiasamuel630 Spending all of your time doing scales and Hanon finger exercises doesn't make sense, in my oppinion. Just go ahead and start playing some actual music that you enjoy. There is a lot of classical music for beginners to choose from. For instance something like Bach's Minuet in G major, or perhaps Mozart's Nannerl notebook. Also I agree on getting a teacher if you can.

Sleep on! I was right! I started practicing again about 3 years ago after 38 years break. Not taking lesson (yet). It took a while until my hands start moving. I practice 1- 3hrs a day. When I was struggling on Chopin Nocturne 9-2(I was on Czrney#30 level when I quit), I tend to get so frustrated because it didn't seem like I'm improving. So I cut off the practice time. Just stop when I got tired and sleep! Then I noticed I play smoothly where I got stuck on the next day... I don't know if my body gets rest and rebooted...but somehow I perform better. I don't mean it works all the time, of course, but yes, sleep on is a good idea! Thank you for your hard work for even the self learners like me!

I don't know of my practice is any good and would like some feedback. I recently found a beautiful piece called 'Merry go round of life' from the movie Howl's moving castle. Everyday I sit down for an hour or two and I try to learn as much as I can; trying to mimic the same timing and such. Sometimes I can master 1 bar and sometimes more but I don't know if that's even called practice. I've struggled to find out what "being good at the piano" really means, is it the amount of piece you can play? your skills in sight reading any piece? What is the most impressive skill for the piano? Any kind of feedback will be really appreciated, and if you have any questions to further help you answer my question please send them right away! Thank you!

Play in public whenever you can. Believe me, people will let you know how you're doing. But remember Rule #1: Have Fun. "Being good at the piano" is less how many scales you've practiced and more how it makes people feel when they hear it. Re practice, you'll want to learn pieces which are at the edge of your ability but not beyond it, or you'll get discouraged because it'll take too long to master one song. Once comfortable with that song, pick another that maybe has a part which requires a skill you need to work on more, like arpeggios. This way, each new song elevates your overall piano skills, and makes your older songs sound that much better.

An interesting question: what if I "double the number of days", by sleeping every day 2 times 4 hours, instead of 8 hours once? Would this mean that my mind has double the time to sleep on and absorb new knowledge, or it doesn't work like that? Of course, this would not be practical, but interesting to know whether this would work.

I think it s not like i do five naps and i learn for six days, sleep is composed by cycles of 90 mins, during each of them there is an amount of time where your brain absorbs useful informations of the day before
