You can copy and paste the contract template into your own, new google doc (or whatever else you want to use) - PLEASE do not request edit access to the document as it will not be granted.
It’s also good to include a Point of Contact in the contract - basically an “I won’t take revisions from anyone else” clause. It really helps out when suddenly there’s a lot of fingers in the creative pie.
@@rdstudios-production I can’t remember exact wording, but having a section that includes a name (most likely the person paying, but sometimes appointed person, ie might be a creative director if dealing with a business) that states that only revisions asked for by the named person will be actioned. It gives you something to fall back on if suddenly another person becomes involved in the project and has opinions. I’ve found with creative projects that they tend to get shown around to gather opinions, and it’s good when/if those opinions come to you that you have a guideline on when you do or don’t action. If you receive one, you can then query with your point of contact to get approval before actioning.
@@kindadorkyfuntimes Hey man, super helpful. Keeps all thos cooks out of the kitchen. I always ask who are the decision makers and what is your process? Nobody ever has a process for stuff like this but it forces them to fake it and create one. I then will ask for timely and consolidated feedback so that when jan the janitor asks about that drone shot I would say "hey let's wait until you have all of your thoughts in one place otherwise the editor (me) will charge us extra. hahahaha
Thank you so much for this video. I just finished watching a depressing couple of videos giving advice on how to low-ball editors down to $8 per hour, or even $2.50 per hour.
@@DeZzBeZooked I can't give you an exact figure because it all depends on the details of the job but if you are a beginner, to be fair, you should be charging less than someone who has more expereince than you. To give you a base price, the average editor in the USA charges around $27.50 per hour. So you're rate would be a bit less.
@@videoeditinglifestyle im not saying my rate is $20 an hour its $20 a video Meaning if i spent 2 hours on the video thats $10 an hour But say like 6 hours $3 an hour
Thankyou buddy. I always wonder what to charge on freelancing sites but didn't have any idea untill i saw this useful video. Sending love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Don't undercharge yourself...think of every single thing...and mark it up x5...An example: your client wants you to edit a project and you have to download clips to your harddrive which eats up 500gb. Then either the client must purchase an external HD or you can do it for them for a fee. If you have to store it then tack on an extra $500 to $1000 per month. Seriously, just like storage facilities, they store you items and charge, except video is way more valuable. Once that moment is gone its gone forever, not like clothes or furniture which can be acquired again. Artist /Creatives lets not let people get over on us. Remember God is a creator!
I recently started, on the 22nd I'll have my current editing job for a month. I cannot tell you how important a contract is, and I wish I got one. It is crucial that in a job both the employer, and the employee/freelancer have the same expectations. I agree with the opinion that you should especially do it if you're working for a friend like I am. Get the contract, it'll save you from being fired.
And I been coming up with some ideas on my vidoes because I’m trying to take RU-vid seriously but ik my editing a big part of it and my editing it trash so if you still do it I’ll appreciate it
😶😶 i swear these are brutal truths ! I basically did 3 days of edit work for my friend's music video, and he never paid me. It felt like I've been cheated.
CONTRACT even with friends,, don't just focus on how much money , but how you feel comfortable with time and ability.. I still use a hand shake for my work and a contract that way when your working on it you don't think about shit* I should have ask for more $$.. Putting it on paper and writing, you have time to go over all the small things before you hand it over for signing.. Tech ~we all learn from our first go around, it gets better and easier as we grow ~GL bud..
Well, he's a friend. If you both discussed about money before hand then you should expect money or else he isn't a friend. If you didn't discuss, you're friends, you should've expected to do it for free.
You are so right about contracts, I have been doing editing since the Betacam days and there are so many people that "Con" you even friends! I once shot an entire movie as one camera man and was told that I was to edit with all the other camera shots taken elsewhere. The video work took many months and all the shots were shown to the producer before deciding on the play list. I had all the original footage on tape and disk, only to be told that the whole project was to be sent to another editor... and please send us all your footage ! What? No pay for my work? I still have the footage as I refused to give it to them but what good is it to me, Zip!
Big fan of your work mate! Yes I feel that I fall in the category of not charging enough for editing.. Clients have ZERO understanding in terms of the hours that go into the process and the arthritis pain we start to get warning up in our wrist... This all started as my passion, now doing it with clients I still love to please but I need to take this to the next level and start charging based on my ever growing skill sets. Love love your videos champ. Thank you so much for sharing 😊👍😊
Thank you so much for this information. I would be lost without it. Just starting my editing career and I don't want to get taken advantage of. Thank you for the contract as well!
Thank you for this! I'm graduating next semester with a Video Production Bachelors in science from Metropolitan State University of Denver and I'm super excited to be getting into more projects~~
It really helped, thank you. What I get screwed with is revisions or changes, and it happened many times that after many revisions and changes at the end they wanted things reverted to the first version I shared with them.
Thank you so much for giving actual numbers for hourly! So many videos just say "it's so fluid, based on all these things" then they dont give any sort of ballpark help. This range is so helpful. Thanks!
No man, that was PERFECT, exactly the info I needed!! Thank you so much mate!!! I was on verge of "i don't want to do this anymore..." with one of my customers.
The first one was like that and what sucks more that he was family friend... Like for real... He scrapped the entire project and forced me to work on a new one and guess what it was all credits. No money. He was like : "when" I'll grow my team I'm gonna give all the projects to you. The hardest thing for me to do was to scrap him out of my life. Like first of all I'm not gonna do your shitty work for free and then expect you to make 5 revisions on it at end scrap the entire thing out and then make another one for you from scratch. Just F OFF When are these people gonna understand we're not tools.
Even though one size definitely does not fit all situations for an hourly rate, this is definitely the best video on the subject telling you how to figure it out! Thank you!
THIS MAN IS PHENOMENAL! LOVE LOVE LOVE your speaking skills--ESPECIALLY YOUR HONESTY~! wonder, could I change the contract for HIRING an editor like you?? YOU ARE WORTH IT! GIVES ME PERSPECTIVE!! God bless you!!!
@@LearnHowToEditStuff or a Photoshop Tutorial of how to make a Photo Like in GTA (i mean exactly Like GTA... The most Tutorials are about how to so that but at every U See a differenz Like the Original "GTA look")
Another great and helpful vid! "A contract is for when things go wrong..." true and the first goal then should be to stay out of court, and/or protect the friendship from permanent damage. A good contract is one that both parties can look at later and (hopefully) say "okay THIS is what we agreed to...how do we get back to that and wrap this up?" Another tool in setting rates is to "play customer" and see what other editors in your area are charging for similar work. If you give a discount to friends or anyone, write the bill up at your full rate and then show the discount taken out. This avoids getting locked in to a discounted rate with them and helps remind them that you don't usually work this cheap. How much of an upcharge should there be for rush work?
Thanks man, I got screwed over on 2 projects it seems... Did 2 different shoot & edits for music vids both only for £100 each. First project was 50+ hrs the second was 30+. Both lump sum payments. Cheers for the template will be using this ALOT.
Thank you! I'm about to start editing my first Premiere Pro project for another fellow videographer. I'm only doing transitions, motion tracked titles and SFX, but its great to know that there is more things I could do to be more professional and make a good impression!
This video was super helpful I'm planning on starting a video editing business soon this was what I struggled on I got the experience but not the price now I know more of what to expect
Thank you for this I really appreciate it. Could you please make a video about how to get a job? I know it sounds weird but like I'm an editor but I don't know where to start
Great video! Someone saw my last video and offered me an editing job. I was thankful but said no because I don’t have the time and I have a full time job. I just started RU-vid 3 months ago as a hobby. It’s good to know someone likes my editing. Thanks for this, I was curious what an editor makes..
Thank you sooooo much! This answered all my questions! I am just starting my freelance journey through video editing and had no clue what to charge as well as if i should create a contract.
He's getting there, make sure to tell friends and friends of friends to subscribe to him because that's how content creators grow the most, word of mouth by people like you and me!
Everyone starts at below a million subscribers at one point... And quite frankly, there's no link between subscriber count and quality but subscriber count and content - "content" includes quality, quantity, type, video length, etc, etc, etc
Whenever I search about video editing carrier, the viewers are not so many compared to the others. Im glad. This mean we still have time to go to the top yall! think bout that
Currently about to apply for a TV channel in the UK which is hiring freelance talent and this video really helped work out what I should charge/say in my application. Thank you very much for posting it and giving your thoughts!
Your opinion applies to anything related about creative work, thank you! and it's funny you mentioned friends as one of the worst people to do business with, I think we all have that friend that ask for free stuff at least once in our careers hahaha
Good tips. 2 things I'd mention: 1. The cheaper the client, the more of a PITA they will be. Guaranteed. Someone who knows and wants quality is willing to pay for it. People who don't know vidoe think it's just a matter of pushing a couple of buttons. They have no clue why it costs so much so they're not willing to pay for it and/or they will expect more and more and more. 2. The only "friends" to do business with are people who were clients FIRST. Friends and family will expect you to give them a "family" rate. Even if they don't outright say so, they will think it. Doing business with someone you knew before you went into business is the best way to lose that relationship.
