Great advice Jude. I noticed the framed pencil drawing of the trout above your head on the wall. I drew that in 1995 and I made 10 prints for sale and for gifts. So, glad you have one. When Scott, Monte and I come down this year I will want to get in touch and schedule a float trip. Best, Jerry Hubka co-author of Modern Midges.

Thanks for sharing this information. I’m sure that this topic is difficult to talk about and I think you did a good job of “explaining” the basics and details people want to know. I’ve fished the Juan as a local since the mid 80’s. Didn’t do any fly fishing the last 25 years as I got hooked on tournament bass fishing. I had a sub-contractor take me on a guided trip a year and a half ago and I was amazed at how different it is to fish the juan in a drift boat with a top notch guide who was working with one of the outfitters/lodges. I had an absolute blast! I had no clue what to tip, I didn’t even know how much the trip cost since it was a gift to me. I tipped him $100. That seemed like a good/above average tip at the time at my guess. I’ve been on a guided trip now 3 times and tomorrow will be the 4th for my wife to learn from a pro, rather than me. 😂 Thanks again Jude! Hopefully someday i can fish with you!

Hey Jade Tough subject to breach for those of us that love fishing with you guys/guides. But I appreciate you doing it. Also enjoyed the cameo appearance of James l Chavez. Way funny amigo. Stay safe out there and I'll look for you on the water.

Very Kool explanation. I at a Disabled Navy Vet cannot afford it. Thanks to PHWFF I was able to do that. And I always tell everyone that you are a superb guide. And what you do for our Vets. Hooyah

I have a few guides that I REALLY like and I stick with them. And they stick with me by texting, emailing me to let me know when some good dates to book with them would be. I always factor in at LEAST a 20 percent tip for the cost of a guided trip. I am not wealthy. Two guided trips a year are a real treat. But they are the best days of my year and totally worth it for my mental health. This was an excellent video. I probably will never go fish the San Juan. But if I did -- you'd be number one on my list!

Nicely presented. I could relate to your story about the lousy tipper. A long time ago, while going to college, I had a waiter job. I remember refusing tips a couple of times when I knew I did a good job. It didn't bother me because there were plenty of other customers who tipped very generously. As for guided trips and tipping: I agree that good guides deserve a generous tip. But a guided trip, including the tip, runs $800 for a day where I fish in the Summer. For a single client that's a heck of a lot of money--especially if the guide doesn't provide the experience you so eloquently described.

Thanks so much for this video. Myself and couple of friends have a trip planned to the san jaun next month with a couple of guided days. An appropriate tip is one of my worries, maybe the only one. It's funny you mentioned the blue collar guys on a budget, that's me, mechanic by trade. I've been lucky enough to have had a couple of floats on the san jaun and the guides were amazing really making it a complete experience. It's been over 20yrs since last trip, can't wait. One of my buddies guided on Wyoming for a few years so I've heard some stories, how people can act that way on a fishing trip is beyond me. They must have a miserable life if they can't enjoy a guide fishing trip.

Just tip them all the cash in your wallet! They are worth it! 💪🏽 No really… everyone is trying to make ends meet… so be considerate. It’s not difficult.
