The Thai language is not easy. I remember doing a very basic Thai vocational course over 10 years ago and while I do not use it as much as I should I still knew most of those words. Well done Paddy and Janice. You should provide some Thai language classes if you aren't doing so already. You would be so good at it.
@curiousboy2204
@curiousboy2204 9 месяцев назад
Thai is a tonal language, it's easier if you already know some tonal languages such as cantonese , mandarin chinese as in Janice's case.

I live in Sydney and have subbed to the both of you for a couple of years now, it was fun to see Janice's video with the 2 of you focused on the Thai food and now to see your video from the same day is focused on the Thai language is very cool to see. By the way you 2 looked like you had a good day and enjoyed each others company?

Wow! Janice did so well. She learnt more Thai in 2 hours than it took me to learn in two years!

are you serious?
@fapman7789
@fapman7789 9 месяцев назад
@@antonyzhou6602 absolutely. I've been to Thailand 10 times over the past ten years and have only managed to pick up and retain a few words. The ones I have learnt, I struggle to pronounce, so much so that Thais will just look at me with this puzzled look on their face and have no idea what I'm trying to say. A Thai woman who spoke very poor English even told me that, "It's nice that you're trying to speak Thai, but you probably shouldn't", or words to that effect. Speaking Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese would definitely be an advantage in learning Thai, however Janice is a natural for sure.
@kathannyaa
@kathannyaa 9 месяцев назад
@@fapman7789 Please don't let the "you probably shouldn't" bring you down. As a Thai I like when foreigners try to speak Thai. It shows that they're trying.
@Soreto23
@Soreto23 7 месяцев назад
@@fapman7789 I assume that u didnt take learning Thai seriously, in that case there is nothing strange. It would be good for people to stop demonizing Asian languages. They are actually more difficult, but they can definitely be learned or mastered. you just need motivation and patience. Pronounce the correct tones, they will come by themselves after some time.
@fapman7789
@fapman7789 7 месяцев назад
@@Soreto23 no, I've been there 10 times in 10 years and tried for years to learn Thai. Some people just can't learn Asian languages, no matter how hard they try, and I'm one of those people. I've tried with multiple language learning courses, bought Stuart Jay Raj's book and others, etc. I've had Thai people look at me in disbelief, not being able to understand any tones I'm trying to pronounce, and then tell me I shouldn't try to talk in Thai. Some people will never be able to speak Thai, no matter how hard they try, and just have to accept it.

Great stuff. You always have such fun interesting people along. I'll probably disagree on the ice cream translation though, although it was very correct when I first started visiting Thailand in the mid 80's. Nowadays virtually every one uses ไอศครีม which is basically identical to the English word. You will see ไอศครีม exclusively used by major ice cream companies such a Walls. Not arguing just commenting and you were actually correct in that this was the word used during สมัยโบราณ olden times!
@ThaiTalkwithPaddy

I was wondering that too. But I couldn't remember the Thai word and I've now crossed into Laos where they use "ka-lem", which I assume is from French.

Nice video to learn from. For aroi and farang some Thai seem to say aloi and falang, is that an accent (central Thai, maybe) or my bad hearing? R sounds being more like L sounds?
@andrewdunbar828
@andrewdunbar828 9 месяцев назад
I've heard that ร "r" is officially supposed to be a rolled r but that that was put in place by a previous king in imitation of European languages. It seems only posh-sounding Thais pronounce it that way all the time though I think everybody can do it if they want to sound posh or formal. Most normal people just pronounce it like ล "l", or if it comes after another consonant it's dropped entirely. The word for country "pratet" usually sounds like "patet" for instance.
