Maintaining your acreage by bush hogging, and choosing the perfect brush hog is key to efficient land maintenance. Whether you're a farm owner, rural property manager, or have extensive acreage, this guide breaks down the factors influencing the speed you can cut and how that relates to the choice of brush hog width. Explore the considerations for property size, vegetation, mowing frequency, terrain, and personal preferences to make an informed decision. Here are five factors that will influence your choice:
🌿 How Many Acres Do I Bush Hog?
• Small Properties (Up to 5 Acres): Compact brush hogs with 4-5 feet cutting width is usually adequate and will enhance maneuverability.
• Medium Properties (5 to 20 Acres): 5-8 feet cutting width strikes a balance between efficiency and precision.
• Large Properties (20 Acres and Beyond): Heavy-duty brush hogs exceeding 7 feet will provide quick coverage and reduced maintenance time.
🌱 What Type of Material Do I Cut?
• Light Vegetation: If mowing mostly grass, ground speed can be increased for maximum coverage
• Moderate to Heavy Brush: If cutting material 1" and above, a slower ground speed will yield a more attractive cut, but it adds to the time required to complete the job.
🚜 How Often Do I Mow?
• Infrequent Mowing: If you only mow once a year, the size of the bush hog is less important
• Regular Mowing to Intensive Mowing: Compounds the need for a wider rotary cutter.
🏞️ What is My Terrain Like?
• Flat and Open Smooth Terrain: Means ground speed can be greatly increased, cutting the hours required to complete. If areas are unobstructed and smooth, ground speeds of 7-9 mph are possible.
• Hilly, Overgrown, Rough or Uneven Terrain: Dictates a slow ground speed as slow as 3 mph in extreme conditionsd.
🌳 How Much Do I Like Bush Hogging?
• Hobbyist Bush Hogging: If you enjoy tractor seat time, then these factors become less important. A lot of viewers see the time spent bush hogging as therapeutic and great time to rerlieve the stresses of an outside job
• Brush Hogging with Time Constraints: If you just need to get the job done as quickly as possible, it is incredibly important to match the width of cutter you purchase to the previous four factors and pick the cutter that hits the "sweet sport" for your specific need.
Factoring these five considerations together will help you select the right width of brush hog to buy to get your job done in an acceptable amount of time. Use the reference guide titled Bush Hog Speed/Width/Acreage Chart available at this link: asktractormike.com/about-cont... to show you how fast you can bush hog based on travel speed and width of cutter.
In conclusion, owning the right brush hog enhances your land maintenance efforts, and considering these factors ensures you make an informed decision. Whether you're a weekend hobbyist or a full time farmer, choosing the appropriate brush hog width contributes to the health and aesthetics of your property. Invest wisely for maximum efficiency, ease of operation, and long-term savings.

Mike, thank you for the great video. Also thanks for pointing out giving the native plants the chance to flower and go to seed and giving the pollinators habitat to thrive!

If you're mowing acres down in Texas in the summer time and that's half the year in Texas, what you really want is a cab and A/C, plus it keeps the snakes out.

I use a "bush hog" for my fields and a flail mower for my orchids and groves.

If it’s grass I would get finish mower, I had always used a bush hog and it took forever switched last year to the finish mower and it is so much better faster….to the point of what kind of tractor if you get a compact it will beat you up I have both a 37 hp compact and an old ford 3000 utility there is a night and day difference between the two that old ford is like driving a Cadillac over rough ground.

Great video Mike and thanks for the chart. That is very helpful. We only mow about 6 acres with a subcompact tractor and a 4' brush hog. Our primary reason for choosing the 4' rotary cutter was tree spacing in some areas of the property. I can really get into the tight spaces with no issue. Thanks again for your great informative videos!

You know what liked all of your videos😊 good job on the topic of what tractor you would get if there's anything I would do differently I would have gotten a little bit more horsepower. So look even if you have enough horsepower just get a tractor with a little bit more horsepower you won't regret that. When I bought a 30 horsepower tractor I wanted a 40. I would suggest going with the bigger size if you're debating between a 5 or 6 ft brush hog go with a six same thing with tractors if you're debating between a 30 or 40 horsepower tractor go with a 40. Surprisingly that's what I've seen is better and years and years down the road you won't regret making that decision if you go a little bigger than whatever you're actually thinking. I think the best way I can explain that don't buy a tractor for today by the tractor that you're going to want to have in 5 to 10 years from now. What are the same thing with your don't think about the brush hog you want today think about the one that you're going to want to use in 10 years. And that will always be the right decision

From the video at the end it appears you have a backup cam or had your Go Pro filming from the back. To save my neck from turning around so much I got a backup cam (magnetic cam) to use while Bushogging, etc. Seven inch screen is mounted where a rear view mirror would be and the cam on a steel slow moving vehicle sign. Took a while to find a non aluminum one.The cam, being magnetic, can be moved to the bucket/or arms if you care to see the loading of the bucket. It is slick! You just gotta know how to fix/trick it to run continuous.

I agree, wholeheartedly. For years I used a 6 foot brush hog and then I bought a flail mower. I have a 55 hp tractor and a 77 inch flail mower. I’ve got about 15 acres that I mow 4 to 6 times a year and it looks like I use a finish more over the whole thing. There are no clumps piled up grass. I’m using hammer blades right now because I’m still clearing some property and it is better for that. It will take out 2 inch saplings at the same time cut the grass. I have recently bought some knife blades and I’m thinking about changing it too cut larger part of the pasture.

Excellent video. I mowed 60 acres last year on rough ground and had a 60" mower. It took all day for 2 days and I was worn out. I bought an air ride seat afterwords, But it still takes 2 days for the weedy plants like broom weed twice a year. But more comfortable.

Another option would be a flail mower that can be outfitted with y knives for grassy fields or hammer knives for more woody vegitation. I bought mine because I wanted to minimize my backswing when maneuvering through tight spots and steep terrain. I was also able to go with a 7 foot mower that is outfitted with a hydraulic side shift, rather than a 6 foot rotary mower. The side shift helps when mowing around trees and fenceposts. My 45hp LS handles it just fine and it gives a beautiful cut. Relative cost of each set up, both purchase price and cost per hour to operate, was also an important consideration for me. But as you say Mike, it really depends on the situation. Great vid and content!!!

One other consideration is the obstacles you have to mow around. On my place I have trees spread around that can make it difficult to maneuver around. I could have bought a 5’ rotary cutter but opted for a 4’. Because the 5’ cutter was a foot longer than the 4’ cutter so my swing was longer. I didn’t realize this until I went to the dealer. Plus I don’t have more than 5 acres I can mow with it.

I really thought about this video that's the best advice I can give anybody with either equipment and implement or any tractor do not make your decision based solely on what you need today first before thinking about today think about what equipment you're going to need in 5 years or 10 years and then think will that tractor also do your job today planning ahead with these big purchases is probably the best advice I could ever give anyone

would a flail mower be better than a rotary cutter?
@qcan8468
@qcan8468 7 месяцев назад
I own a bush hog, but I’ve seen some flail mowers that can provide a better cut. Also, since the flail mowers weigh less, typically you can run one 1-2 feet wider. Maybe Wendell should check them out as well.

Mike, can you talk about safety with a tractor? Do you wear the seat belt? What do you do if you feel your tractor may tip over? I have heard of 2 stories about how they died due to a tractor going over. Thanks for all the videos, I am in MO as well and have a great deal. Thanks

Hello, good video. What do you think of the pull behind bush hogs? Like the type you can pull behind a Gator / Side by Side?

If you don't have allot of obstacles and need to cover allot of ground, i really like a batwing for that. Rhino makes a 10 foot one and woods has a 12 ft. We have a 12 ft woods that we usually use behind a 45 hp small utility tractor. A large compact tractor should handle that ok to. It seems like the multiple spindle brush cutters give a better cut then a single spindle

I have 18.5 acres in Louisiana. My Kubota 4030su with a 5' brush hog, wit trees etc. takes me 3 days to cut. But I don't want a rotary cutter wider than my tractor. If my tractor fits between obstacles, so does my brush hog. BTW, any advice removing John Deere stump jumper to replace seals?

Mike, what are the advantages and disadvantages of a flail mower versus a rotary mower?
@Noah_E
@Noah_E 7 месяцев назад
Flail mowers are more compact, so are easier to maneuver, transport, and store. They also have more components, so they cost more and require more maintenance. But you can easily swap between light grass Y and heavy brush hammer blades. They cut much finer than a rotary and don't leave windrows. They are also safer because they throw debris down instead of out, like a bullet. The only real benefits to a rotary cutter are that they are simpler, which means cheaper to buy and maintain. They also have greater "reach" for use under trees down banks/ditches. They work well in reverse, unlike a flail. You can also get flails that tilt up 90 degrees to cut limbs overhanging trails and down 60 degrees for banks. They cost about triple a comparably sized rotary, but are worth every penny.

A 6 ft rotary cutter is about 9 ft long. A6 1/2 ft flail mower is less than 3 ft. long. Also a much better cut on uneven ground.

What you are cutting can also cause you to change your speed. If you are cutting large weeds or brush, you may have to drive slower to get an acceptable cut quality.

Cutting 3 times per year? We're cutting 50 acres of grass every 3-4 weeks [2' tall] with a 10' Rhino behind a New Holland TT75. The terrain is rolling. Takes about 6 hours. Your chart highlights the challenge...terrain vs height of the grass vs speed. I think Wendell is gonna cut more than 3 times per year.

I have 20 acres with about 8 acres to mow. After using a rotary mower and a finish mower I ended up using a diesel zero turn mower. It's a lot faster.

Just get the utility tractor even if you only get a 6 foot cutter.

What the chart doesn't account for is overlap. A small cutter has 2 strips of overlap for 1 from a 12' cutter. I've calculated it is 10-15% faster if you double your cutter size. It is not a perfect science.
