Young inexperienced photographers pretty much ruin the price market with their inexperience and refusal to calculate license fees properly. In the country where I live some go as far as to shoot for like 500$ for the biggest clients in the country. They think if they dont charge much it gives them a chance to build up a portfolio and client list - what really happens is that by giving the richest clients their work for 500$ they are setting the benchmark for the entire market forever.

Thank you for helping me to overcome that thought "if I have done it wrong anchoring my value high so that they can negotiate down to the cost I expected at least less or more than 10%". I was told to not do it that way, from very very respected entrepreneurs, I asked them to mentor me so I somewhat doubted myself on that tactics, only when the prospect doesn't give me the budget... Thanks for helping me gaining back my confidence. You are awesome, Andrea, Chris, Futur! I see some lights shed on me today!

This is so helpful. I used to do this all the time as part of my healthcare corporate job where I create Statement of Work (SOW) documents that talked about scope creep but never thought it was part of my photography career as well. Thanks so much, Andrea and Chris for talking about this.

It depends on the country you live in. USA has the highest prices. UK/Germany/Japan pay somewhat less. Small market countries - 1000$ per day is already top deal.

@@williamjamessidis5744 UK still pays huge - especially London. After all, it’s one of the photography capital’s of the world! I’ve heard of photographers here getting £8,000+ per day

"This sounds like you have between $10,00 - $15,000" - 6:49 I found this part really interesting. A way of finding out what their budget is without directly asking or saying how much you would charge.

Depending on the client you can just ask straight forward, because most of the time the shooting includes variables that can let you know more. Things like locations, props etc. can be of different price and value. Like say they want an elephant in your picture. It gives you a chance to use it as leverage to find out the general budget by asking "since an elephant can be real, but very expensive, or CGI one, maybe slightly less expensive, but also less real, or cheap prop that will be shot separately - what kind of money are we looking at, so we can calculate the proper version"?

I wish I had watched this last week when I was negotiating a film gig. I definitely lowballed myself, I could tell they were expecting more and told me they wouldn't hold me to that. I think they felt bad.

After reading *Start With No, and the second book No* by the late Jim Camp, I kind of don't want anyone to know about the "No" system (XD)...Though someone like Andrea (who deals with negotiations almost daily) could definitely make use of it (If she has not read them already, though I doubt it, as she mentioned sending a price range via email without fully understanding the vision of the other side). And You reading this, should buy and read these books, as almost everything in life is about negotiation. So there. Grab the book(s) and put the system to work. The world is full of abundance, so I am not afraid to have other strong negotiators around.

At approx. the 3:45 video mark: *BUY-OUT* can be a *confusing* licensing (slang) term that has *no* legal authority in law or photography. When describing the acquisition of broad usage rights, use precise language; otherwise, a judge may have to settle the confusion between client and photographer. BUY-OUTS can have quite *DIFFERENT* meanings to different parties; for example: 1) Some clients believe a BUY-OUT is a *“copyright transfer,”* where the client will own the photograph, its copyright, title, and interest (i.e., the photographer gives up/transfers to the client *ALL* legal rights to his/her photograph; the photographer no longer owns the photograph). 2) Some clients believe a BUY-OUT is a *non-exclusive, unlimited* use of a work (i.e., the client gets to use the photograph in all media for, say, one-year, but can NOT transfer those rights to others). 3) And some understand BUY-OUT to be a grant of *exclusive* photo rights that the client can exploit for a period of time and media. The best practice is to use *exact* (legal) language in bids and licensing agreements rather than *imprecise* terms like BUYOUT. Great video: I’ve seen a few Futur vids where you roleplay price negotiations, and as the designer/artist you ask first “what’s your budget” rather than putting your anchor out first. What do you say to a potential client that’s not willing to “compete against themselves” by admitting what their budget is first, forcing you to potentially drop anchor way too high? What if you’re finally in a position where you don’t actually need this gig, would like to do the job for the job’s sake, but don’t want to undermine your normal professional integrity?

I don't think so. there are reps for illustrators, actors, artists, singers, song writers, photographers, directors, but not for designers.

If you’re *licensing your creative media* to clients and others, you’ve *GOTTA* make sure that your works are *TIMELY* (quickly) registered with the US Copyright Office, in case the client goes rogue and exceeds the licensing terms of your agreement or a third-party begins exploiting your photographs without your blessing and payment. I understand why you might think this but I doubt commercial photography agents advertise. There client core is based on exclusivity and elitism, not quantity. Most agents have a super small and select roster that's highly curated.
